After going through 3 other a/c's this summer (a frigidaire that arrived broken, another that was the wrong voltage and an LG from a few years ago that finally bit it) I spent the extra $ and went with a fredrich. Couldn't be happier, or for that matter, cooler. The unit takes about an hour to install, you have to slide the chassis off and mount the unit to the window (be sure to follow the instructions!) what you see when you slide the unit out from its housing is what makes this ac different. Solid commercial grade fan and compressor, a vent to take in outside air, totally solid construction.
After installing and turning it on the unit cooled off my place in about 15 min (about 550 sq. ft.) and it keeps the temp consistent. It's not the quietest unit I've heard but it's acceptable and I can easily watch a movie w the unit running in the same room.
Finally, this ac looks really nice. Love that the controls are hidden under a flip up panel. Totally modern and clean looking.
Worth the extra money and time for installiation. Highly recommended.

Back in 1999 I bought a Goldstar 10K BTU window unit and it worked perfectly for the last 13 years but it started to make some new noises that were telling me it's days were numbered.Goldstar was bought by LG and I bought a refurbished 12K BTU LG unit on line two months ago and it turned out to be defective.
The thing I noticed was all three units were identical in their internal layout, external dimensions, and even the metal stampings in the frame and louver placement.
The only difference was the design of the plastic face attachment... like a '61 Pontiac and a '61 Chevy are pretty much the same car with cosmetic differences.
So, the moral of the story is, spend the money, get a good unit like this Friedrich and save yourself the frustration and aggravation of going round and round with having to ship back a defective unit after you've cut up the shipping box.
Always plug it in before you cut up the box!
