Intermatic FF12HHC 12-Hour Spring Loaded Wall Timer, Brushed Metal
This was our seventh Intermatic spring-loaded timer 6 on fans and one on a heat lamp. They all seem to be about the same quality. They are now made in Tunisia. Intermatic makes timers with mini-cover plates, which fit in single or multi-gang electric boxes. This model is designed to fit only a single gang box, since it includes a full single-gang cover plate.
The electric box this device is to be installed in needs to be at least 2.5" deep; and deeper is better. This is because the device is nearly 2" deep and you'll need room for the house wiring. The timer fits snugly (height / width) in a steel electric box, so there's no room for wires on the side. This timer is for single-pole installations only. It won't work to replace a 3-way switch, such as found at the top & bottom of a staircase.
Although the product title says brushed metal, the cover plate is metallic-colored plastic.
These are NOT totally silent timers. I took the timer mechanism out of its Bakelite case once they are 100% mechanical, similar to a wind-up alarm clock. Listen carefully and you can hear the timer gears whirring and clicking. That's fine if it controls a fan that itself makes some sound, but if it's for a light in a quiet room, the timer sound is more obvious. Also, when it shuts off, there's an audible snap. I wouldn't recommend any wind-up timer for a bedroom where you're trying to sleep. For a silent timer, consider a product such as the Woods 59014 Decora Style 12-8-4-2 Hour Preset Wall Switch Timer, White, 12-Hour
This timer has no external installation wires. To connect it electrically, remove ½" of insulation from the house wiring; tighten the hot lead under the bottom connector and the lamp or fan wire under the top connector. (Reversing these two wires on the timer works and is perfectly safe, although the National Electric Code says to put hot wires on the lug where the switch says it belongs.)
If your timer doesn't behave as described below, return it immediately for a refund or replacement. All seven of our timers work as they should -i.e., turn the knob:
clockwise to turn the power on to a set time (you're supposed to turn past 2, then set it)
counter-clockwise to reduce the time remaining
fully counter-clockwise to turn power off
If the knob should ever crack, call Intermatic and ask for a replacement. They'll probably send you one for free...

I use this to control roof heaters to prevent ice dams in the winter. It works as advertised and is suitable for this high wattage application, which an electronic timer would not be. Easy to install. Good quality.
