The product image shows the unit beyond fill capacity for an added "coolness" effect with the water boiling.

The "NESCO" logo becomes very hot to the touch.. so after refilling the lid will need to be closed very quickly or with something to cover your hand to prevent burns.

The first time I filled it up with cold water from the tap (as per the instructions), I thought it took a long time to boil. So then I timed a few boils using cold tap water (wastes least water, most realistic usage scenario for majority of my time):

Boil time 1 not timed, 8 cups

Boil time 2 10:30.0, 8 cups

Boil time 3 2:46.1, 2 cups, no cooldown

So when the product description says "in a matter of minutes hot water will be ready", I think they're going based on the minimum fill amount of 2 cups.. or having filled it with already hot water from the tap. Timing is done from switching power on to when it auto-shuts off using the stop watch on my iPhone. So it may have a second or two margin of error due to reaction time.

After 4 full boils (directions recommend 2) there is still an extremely slight plastic smell to the water which I imagine will go away after a few more full runs. There also appears to be a very light flavor difference between the boiled water from this unit and from our stainless kettle on the stove. It's hardly noticable and when I mix up 3 cups, one boiled from this, one from the microwave, and one from the stove.. I can't accurately pin-point where each was boiled.

Ultimately, I purchased this for convienance. My wife is from the UK; both of us are big coffee and tea drinkers.. waiting for the kettle to boil on the stove top was getting old. Boiling water in an electric kettle is more energy efficient and opens up a space on our stove top again where our stainless steel kettle once sat.

The lighting on the unit is kind of cool but the kids seem to enjoy it more. The light isn't as bright as shown in the product image and is somewhat overpowered by normal lighting within the kitchen.

Overall, I'm happy with the purchase. Now if only they would boil as fast as they do in the UK.. ;)

As someone who lived in the tea-drinking land of the Brits for years, I am fussy about my cuppa. I use distilled water and would be the first to reject the appliance if there was any taint to the taste of the water.

When I unwrapped the kettle, the first thing I did was boil a mixture of tap water and white vinegar, at least a cup of the latter. Be careful if/when you do this -the mixture will literally jump out of the spout of a full kettle when it comes to a boil, so make sure there's nothing like paper or flesh that can be splashed! Then I poured the vinegar mixture down the sink, rinsed the kettle with tap water, filled it with distilled water and boiled a faultless cup of tea.

The kettle is well-designed so that water neither dribbles short of the cup nor leaps past it when pouring, and the balance is good when grasping the handle from well down the side.

The blue light is hoopy, too.

This 'Nesco Electric Kettle' will bring a cool mood to your kitchen.

The kettle turns on a beautiful true blue color to light up the water while it is in the heating process and turns off along with the heating element at the moment the water reaches boiling point.

As much as this kettle is electric, it doesn't sing that tune, so you'll have to rely on viewing the kettle to know whether or not the hot water is ready. If you don't care for that tell-tale kettle's whistle though; not hearing it just might have you dancing along with the bubbles in the boiling water. Those bubbles produce quite a show and are a pleasure to observe if you have a fascination for that sort of thing. The entire front half of the kettle boasts a large clear/opaque plastic viewing pane to enjoy this lighted experience.

There are a few key points to note from my experience with this product.

*kettle only boils water, no other substances are to be heated with this appliance (for best performance don't put tea bags inside either)!

*kettle does not have a way to maintain water at a constant hot temperature for prolonged periods/ no keep warm feature

*once the kettle boils the water, it does turn itself OFF.

*minimum boiling volume is 2 cups at a time, maximum is 8 cups

*kettle comes in two parts; cordless kettle and corded kettle base

*kettle has AUTO OFF built-in feature, no permanent ON feature

*ON switch is on the kettle, not on the base; there are no switches on the base

*interior base is the most metal to come into contact with the water, everything else touching water is plastic

*there is no glass in this appliance

*kettle swivels freely full-circle 360 degrees on base so you can place the handle at any angle

*kettle base takes about as much room as a standard 6 inch round cake pan sitting on the counter as far as surface area

*best practice: to empty out kettle after use as it is not recommended to leave water sitting in the appliance for prolonged periods to prevent eventual calcification

*the filter, a small sieve/strainer located inside the kettle just in front of the pour spout, is removable for rinsing by sliding/slotting into place and is used to protect any sediments from within the kettle from being poured out into your cup

I recommend boiling and rinsing the kettle 3 or 4 times at full capacity prior to enjoying a beverage or meal with water from this kettle for the first time. after following this practice, i experienced no flavor taints in the water.

Overall a fantastic kettle and one of those must have appliances for anyone who enjoys often some hot tea and cocoa, instant ramen or even steaming hot towels used in cosmetic/therapeutic practices. My whole family has been using my Nesco Electric Kettle and commenting on how great it is. I think my old whistling stove top model is jealously retiring.

Honest reviews on Nesco WK-64P 2.24-Quart Electric Water Kettle

We've been using it for 1/2 year now. Workls well, we like it. Previous Krups worked for 13 years and though Nesco has some deficiencies, I still gave it 5-star rating.

Pros:

360-defree rotation when on base

transperent water-view

quick boiling

low-noise compared to other black/steel models

price

look and feel

solid and stable

not heavy, balanced (unlike new Krups)

Cons

you have to fill it above MIN mark/2 cups or it won't shut-off quickly, will be hot

filter/screen(useless anyway) may fall out when lid is open. We don't and fill through the spout.

I just ordered another of these for my grandchild in college. I was surprised at the reviews about the horrible taste and smell. I was worried about that the first time and was pleasantly surprised that it didn't taste of plastic and had no smell. I noticed Bonito Lil's review mentioned using distilled water and that's what I used because I wanted to leave the water in the unit until the next use. Finally, her description of the blue boiling water is right on. It's hoopy. If I'm having a hot drink after dark I turn off the light and watch it boil for my evening's entertainment.
