My first two tankless water heaters did not have this device I learned the hard way that there is calcium or lime (or both) in my water here, and it destroyed the canisters in the first two heaters. They cracked and the corrosion was evident on their exterior surfaces. For my third tankless, I had the plumber install a T-pipe where this filter is installed. I've used them for the past year or so, changing them every 6 months. It's like insurance for the heater. So far, so good!

The first one I tried to screw in, the first thread stripped and I couldn't get it to screw in straight. Be very careful as the threads are soft plastic. So I had to throw that one away and carefully screw in the second one. No idea if this actually does anything. We have a softner/conditioner that does a great job on our well water, but when the plumber installed our hybrid water heater he put this scale filter in as we'll.
