I own 3 vornado heaters, including this one, and they have been the best i've owned by a wide margin. here's why:

* they fan enough air to mix the room air and maintain a more uniform temperature (their advertising is true in that respect)

* no 'hot toaster zone' in front of the heater, with the rest of the room cold

* it is quiet

* the thermostat works! the heater puts out less heat after the room has warmed up

* this heater may appear to take longer to warm up a room for one reason: it is heating up the whole room, not just a small zone immediately surrounding the unit.

* It does use nearly 1500 watts, which is the maximum a heater can consume to be UL approved on a conventional 15Amp household outlet/circuit. The only way it puts out less heat is if you account for a more active fan. The reason the heat feels less when you put your hand in front of the unit is due to the larger amound of air being fanned. The total heat output (heat per cubic foot of air moved X the number of cubic feet of air moved) is the same... just with more even results

for best results: it helps to think of this heater as an 'ambient' heater:

(the following would work for pretty much any heater)

*position the heater in one corner of the room, preferably near the coldest wall... it will suck in the cold air, warm it and push it into the room

*do not aim the heater toward any sitting area... fanning air always makes it feel cooler (summer fan cooling anyone?) and will give the false impression that the heater is not working... when it is in fact warming the room

* if your heater has a temperature sensitive, variable speed fan: set the fan on high and it will not cycle on/off... it will also mix more air in the room and in doing so, maintain a more uniform temperature

Notes:

* I typically let my furnace bring the house to 69 degrees (from it's daytime setting of 58) when I get home at night and let the heater keep it at that temp afterwards. Even in Chicago winters, the furnace usually doesn't come on after the first run (my main floor is an open area, 700 sq. feet, with 7 windows and 2 doors... with only generic insulation... in Chicagoland)

* no space heater is considered 'whole house capable' in winter conditions. A 1500 Watt unit just cannot put out the BTU's a furnace can. It is not realistic to expect a space heater to quickly bring a whole house from cold to toasty warm in a short time.

On the lower side... Vornado seems to have had quality issues with the manufacturing of their heaters.. They've even had a recall on another model of theirs (which i own) due to faulty (read cheap?) solder points

So my rating for this heater is:

5 stars based on features and performance

-1 star for reduced trust factor

It's very important not to get confused (as I suspect some reviewers have been) between two very similar Vortex models, the VH2 and the DVH. The DVH does indeed break almost instantly and should be avoided. This model, the VH2, on the other hand, is perfectly adequate for the price. No small electric heater in this price range is going to do a great job of quickly heating a large drafty room on an extremely cold day, but the VH2 does a find job. You will have to be patient however: it will take several hours to notice much of an effect in large dining room or kitchen. But if you wait, you will find that the VH2 gets the job done (and is quiet as well).

I live in an old drafty icebox of a house built in the 1930's. Even when I run my gas heater, it doesn't do much good. I needed a space heater, and bad! I was wary of buying a space heater as I figured it couldn't help, but I'm glad I got this one! I read the instructions, followed their recommendations

for a large room and in about 15 minutes it took the chill off and made it so much more comfortable! It even reached into the surrounding hallway and dining room. I'm quite pleased. As a pet owner, I also appreciate the smaller vents that keep curious kitty cat's out of the heater. My cats all congregate by it and there's no way for them to get inside of it.

Honest reviews on Vornado VH2 Whole Room Vortex Heater

I purchased the Vornado VH2 Heater, but I returned it to the store after a few days.

My wife and I owned a Lasko Ceramic Element 30" Pedestal heater for years, but this season it finally died. We chose the Vornado VH2 Vortex heater after reading some of the positive reviews.

We live in the Northeast, have kind of a drafty apartment and we try to keep the heat low or off to save energy. The space heater goes into whatever room we are in and we use it to heat that room while we are there. Or we turn it on in the bedroom in the morning while we get ready for the day.

After a few days, it was clear that the Vornado VH2 was not going to cut it. The unit blows heat, but it is very tepid compared to our other heater.

We did notice that the Vornado VH2 (as many positive reviews here have mentioned) gives a very ambient warmth meaning that it seems to spread the heat about the room very evenly. However, be warned, it takes a loooong time for it to even raise the temperature a little bit.

I am confident in saying that this is NOT the heater for certain uses. For instance, if you have a home office and you like to use a heater to aim warmth your workstation area, this would not do the trick. Also, it isn't the heater for a fast warm-up. The Vornado VH2's big failure was in our morning routine. Usually, during the winter, we wake up, put on the heater, go into the bathroom to get ready and when return to the bedroom the heater has it nice and toasty. Well, the first morning using the Vornado was a shock it felt as if nothing had changed in the room.

After a couple of days, I went out and bought another Lasko heater, (same model as we had before,) brought it home and did a side by side comparison. NO CONTEST. I immediately boxed up the Vornado and returned it.

*****On a safety note: The plug for the Vornado VH2 seemed to not sit well in the outlet. When I would go to unplug it after using it, I would notice that the plug would kind of be hanging down, just a little, out of the outlet. This doesn't seem to be the case with our new heater, or our old one.

Not sure if there was a faulty batch that other people here received, but this will be the 3rd season using this product.. and it is the perfect answer to heating up a small room quickly. A Large room does indeed take more time, especially if there are open doors or wide openings in the room. It is not meant to be on 24 hours a day so maybe thats why other people are having trouble. The internal thermostat ensures you won't be wasting any more energy than you need to. About to buy my 2nd one right now..

I absolutely love this unit. I have not had any issues thus far and can only say good things about it. The flames are very realistic looking and it even flickers off the wall every now and then. It's cool to the touch so you don't have to worry about kids or pets getting hurt. I love that you can turn off the heat and just have the flames flickering. The remote is a nice addition as well. All in all, a great product! I bought my fireplace from a different website and paid less than this posted price, but regardless how much it cost, you won't regret buying it.

We've been using this kettle at work just fine. It's very light weight but has a tall receptacle that holds the kettle well so we're not concerned about tip over.

It boils incredibly fast & has a nice comfortable handle & easy to use lid release.

Make sure you follow the initial instructions to boil 3x letting cool each time, before the first use to remove any foul taste.

The element is not "protected" so we'd expect scale to build up, but that's easily cleaned.

Only gripe is that the filter seems to fall out when tipped upside down. Even so, can recommend this kettle as a low cost but perfectly functional kettle.

Let's start with context: I'm British so having a kettle is not optional and I have a lifetime's experience of kettles!

When we arrived in the US 14 months ago our accommodation didn't have a kettle and we didn't know any local shops so we immediately ordered this kettle. Less than 14 months later I have had to buy a new kettle as this one became temperamental about switching on a couple of months ago and finally refused altogether. It had always felt pretty shoddy and light-weight on a par with the kind of cheap kettle I took to college some 25 years ago, (very few like this are sold any more t'other side of the pond bottom end of the market only, costing less than $15 final price.) For between $16 and $20 final price you can easily get much better and more stylish ones over there.

Anyway, back to this kettle. On/off switch is very flimsy and easily comes out of its holding clips. It has an exposed element so it gets "furred up" easily. It's base is so flimsy that the plastic covering of the connecting point was already bent and distorted when we received it. Boil time is pretty average, (actually pretty slow if you're used to British kettles.) Scale screen broke within a couple of months when my husband's finger went through it when he was taking it out to clean it.

I have replaced it with a Hamilton Beach one from a famous discount store for $20. It's a far better kettle: sturdier, faster boiling, concealed element, metal gauze scale screen which should prevent accidental breakage, it's the central mount type rather than the jug type which is far more convenient and it's a lot more stylish (shape and it's stainless steal and black.) Spend your $20 on the HB one!

It does what it is supposed to do at a good price. Bought two; one for my parents and one for me.

I use it at least 2-3 times per day. Much faster than either the electric stove or gas range although I do miss the whistling kettle sound.

The cordless feature and level window were two of the deciding factors besides price.

Initial downsides, it took several boiling cycles to get rid of the plastic smell. It is fine now. Once the boil is done it doesn't keep the water piping hot for long.

Honest reviews on Kalorik Cordless Jug Kettle, White, 57-Oz.

I bought this for my latest tour in lovely Afghanistan at home I have a glass and steel beauty, and I was missing it (and the easy availablity of hot beverages).

I followed the advice of other reviewers, and boiled (the same water in my case it is at a premium here!) three + times before drinking from it. That did the job: no taint of leeching plastic.

It is very inexpensive, the base is wide enough to keep it rock solid on my makeshift table (a scrap of 3/8" plywood held up by nylon cord to the rafters of my tent). I hasn't tipped once in any weather, though trying to seat it on the electrical connector from a seated position next to it is not easy need to be standing to use it properly.

It is well designed doesn't direct hot steam on your hand while you pour, and the little mesh screen that snaps into place to cover the spout does well at keeping dust and bugs out of the kettle. The handle is comfortable to the touch.

I am enjoying this cheapie champion very much, and for the price: you will too. I even think it looks pretty sharp much better than the 220V ugly, steam-throwing no-automatic-shutoff deathtrap I bought in Iraq last time (just because something is made by a German company does not guarantee it is well-engineered!)

This is a great kettle for the price. I have no complaints.

For about a year now, I have been using a Melitta kettle I got at a department store for $20. It is wonderful and gets used sometimes several times a day. I bought this kettle for my office; I assumed for the same price I could get a kettle of equal value. Instead, this kettle works well barely well enough to keep.

Probably the most disappointing thing is the large exposed coil, which looks very difficult to clean and requires that there be at least 1L in the pot for me to feel safe boiling water. It does shut off correctly after water boils, but it is difficult to see the light that is supposed to indicate that it is on, and the base design makes it somewhat awkward to use.

This heater has two settings, but the low is about the same heat as a hair dryer. The higher setting is, well, like two hair dryers. The switches are on the top left side so they are easy to get to and don't show much. The product description said it had a thermostat and a remote. It does not. I have used it in a 9 x 12 room as back up heat when I turn the house furnace down and I have been comfortable. But the thing about this heater is, it really is so cute you may be tempted to forgive it for it's heat output. You may even want to carry it from room to room, which is what I did. But it wasn't easy. It is pretty heavy for me. It is a flat black metal and a pretty old fashioned design, an arched wheat design, with very realistic flame and glowing coals (even when I replaced the 2 to watt candelabra bulbs with 15 watt bulbs to save electricity.) The weather was so dismal here lately in Colorado, I took it into the living room just to enjoy the fireplace and ended up dragging it in front of the couch and warming my feet with it.

It came in a badly damaged box with a broken leg, which I repaired with JB Weld instead of returning. UPS beat it up, but it did not have adequate packing to begin with. After getting a second electric stove of a different brand, I would say the Vernon was overpriced.

Post Script. I have been using this heater throughout the winter. I suspect it is quite the energy hog. It has tripped my breaker more than once. It would probably be more effective in a very small room, but it does take the chill off the above mentioned room.

I think it will make a very pretty end table with a plant on top of it.

The 3-D Electric Fireplace has been around a couple of years now, but the cost was still fairly high. Now, it has come down to just at $100. The 3-D flame has improved vastly over the earlier drum-light type to the point that it's hard to tell if it is real or not. I bought mine through Amazon.com, and was pleasantly surprised too, at the low shipping costs!

If there is a drawback, it would be that I will have to add my own stovepipe if I want authenticity, but that isn't a real big problem.

I am very, very happy with my purchase!

For many years, I have had a fireplace to add enjoyment to our ND snowy winters---1st, a wood burner, and then a gas fireplace. The woodstove was the real deal, along with messiness and work. The gas(with a remote) was the best---in my opinion--no fuss and yet a real fire. Recently, I moved into a small apartment, without any fireplace. I went looking for the feeling of cozy, a 'pretend' fire, and found it in my new Vernon Electric Stove. The 'logs' shine more than glow, but the dancing 'fire' met my expectations in an electric stove at this price--it gave me cute and cozy, exactly what I wanted. The weather has been too warm to review how it heats, but I turned on the fan and it does blow out heat, so I am sure it will give me the extra heat where I want it.

my friend was going on and on about her new heater and I wondered how anyone could get that excited over an appliance. When I saw it I knew I must have one and as I live far out of the city I ordered on Amazon to be delivered. When the package came I heard some slight rattling in the box, and was very disappointed that it made a constant clicking clunking noise when operating. It worked well, put out great heat at lowest setting and was gorgeous. I remembered I had read reviews that another brand made noise so I specifically order this brand instead.( I took the noise to be just a normal part of the mechanism) I went back online and found a review ( of another similar brand)that referred to the same noise and the guy said he opened it up and the rotating rod was just off its mount. SO I bravely unscewed ( about a dozen screws)the back ( Firesense customer support was available),and it was a simple matter to put the rod back in its place and it works great with only the low fan sound. Im writing this for anyone who may have this experience and save them the trouble of sending it back or returning a great product unecessarily.

It sounds silly, but the handle on the top of this space heater increases its portability tenfold. It's very light, and because it only takes one hand to move it around, I'm constantly switching it from the floor to an end table. The many different heat settings mean that you can be very picky about the heat blasting out at you.

Another feature that I find preferable is that it heats constantly, unlike some space heaters which practically light you on fire but come on only intermittently. This handy space heater stays at the temperature you choose the entire time. I've run this thing for 10 hours at a time with no ill effects. It lasted through last winter and is still going strong this winter. When I had the flu for a couple of weeks, I hunkered down on my couch with this on the coffee table and baked myself every single night for the entire night.

I adore this thing and I'm about to order another to keep in my office. (I live in a house that was built in 1825 so it can be a little drafty. Because all the rooms are small and the house is full of doors just for the purpose of trapping heat, it's more energy efficient for me to squirrel myself away in my office with the door shut and the space heater on than to crank the furnace in the entire house up.

EDIT 9/19/2013: This thing is still going strong. During the winter, my programmed thermostats turn the house temp way down, so at night I close the doors to my room and bake myself all night. This heater has never once let me down. At this point, I can't tell you how many nights it's run the entire night, 8+ hours, every night during the winter months. It still works just as great now as the day I first got it. I LOVE this heater.

I bought this heater in November 2010 from another seller. I first used it in a room that did not have a carpeted floor and it provided good heat for its size although the temperature was only about 60-degrees F so it really wasn't much of a test. At the end of the month when the temperature dropped to the 40s and 30s at night, I used the heater in a rather small 15' x 13' carpeted room and almost froze until I realized this: the heater blows its heat downward toward the floor. I was about to return it for being defective until I decided to try sitting it on a small box I had. After I put it on the box, it started heating the entire room with no problem at all even getting too hot at the highest setting. The fact that it blows downward could be a defect, but I am thinking that because this is actually a utility heater, it is made for non-carpeted rooms which helps bounce the heat around the room or keep it from igniting items directly in front of it although I could be wrong.

For the quality, this heater is very durable and sturdy. It has a very solid feel to it, with a good weight. Nor does it feel or look cheaply made. The fan sound is a bit noticeable compared to my tower heater, but it isn't loud as to hinder sleeping or watching tv. One thing about the heater is that the fan is always on high, but, in my opinion, that is good for low heat settings because it still helps distribute the heat throughout the room. The thermostat isn't digital but works very well. If the temperature is constant outside, the heater keeps the room at a fairly even temperature. And, I like the fact that I can turn the knob to exactly where I want it rather than it being set at say 5 degree increments the way my tower heater is.

This heater and all of its comparable models do use quite a bit of electricity. I have noticed that this heater will use about 36 kilowatts in a 24-hour period. That is about $4 $6 a day depending on the electric company rates.

I have used this heater every day for the past month with no problems at all other than having to sit in on a box. So, overall, I give it 4 stars. The only thing taking away is the fact that I have to sit it on the box, the slightly audible fan noise and the amount of electricity it uses. But those are all very minor, in my opinion, for the comfort it provides.

(sorry for the VERY poor video quality my little digital camera isn't exactly designed for making movies and the sound does not pick up very well either; hope you can turn up your volume and still get the gist!)

This video briefly compares the Holmes HQH307 Tower Quartz Heater, and a Dr Heater Portable Quartz + PTC Infrared Space Heater 1500W, Dual Heating System, UL Listed.**, with the spotlight on the Lasko 675945 Stanley 12-Inch Ceramic Utility Heater. While all three heaters are relatively energy efficient choices each have various strong and weak points which are discussed, but the Stanley model is a BIG winner in a small package! It costs the least and heats even a large room just about as fast and as well as my old favorite, Dr. Heater.

Important: the design of this model produces directional heat it blows on an angle towards the floor. On hard surfaces like tile or hardwood this is a huge plus for quick distribution of heat. When I use this in a carpeted area, the carpet will absorb the heat and the room takes longer to warm unless I put the heater on heat resistant surface a couple of feet above the floor like on a small end table.

Edited to add: the description states "built-in safety features, which consist of a self-regulating ceramic heating element and automatic overheat protection", but please be aware that this unit appears NOT to have a tip-over shut off feature.

The video highlights differences in features and functions of each, including demonstrating how fast and how hot each unit gets comparatively.

Uses about 36kwh per 24hrs; you can use your electric bill to find your rate to see what this unit will cost to run day to day.

No word on longevity as this is a new purchase for me. Very pleased with this item so far though and happy to recommend!

** for more information on the Dr Heater Portable Quartz heater please check the product page and/or my review of it which was posted on October 21, 2011.

Pros: Compact and quality design. Easy to operate and safe. good heating and fast startup. You can be sure to feel the heat as soon as it starts up.

Cons: Initial smell of the camicals used to protect the ceramic heating parts. A little noisy.

Sturdy, with a great handle, so it's easy to pick up and move around. But no turn off "tip over" switch. I almost started a fire on the carpet with this heater turned over. Most of my other space heater turn off. So do not use in a children's area, could be dangerous. It's very industrial looking but it's only looks. The output is no more than any other of its size and it pulls a LOT of electricity for the output you get. Thermostat is a joke, doesn't regulate a steady temp at all. THE WORST is the noise...IT'S THE NOISIEST HEATER I HAVE EVER HAD...and it varies with its noise, in cycles like a snoring person!...LOL...Anyways, the bottom line was the cost vs efficiency and this heater fails.
