UPDATE (7/25/12): One of the commenters posted a link where you can buy extra food containers for $5 off the crockpot website. Sweet!

Pros:

* It looks cool. It made a couple of my co-workers "ooh" and "aah".

* It is compact, light, and easy to carry.

* It warms food great as long as you remember to plug it in! On average, it warmed my food to comfortable eating temperature within 1 ½ hours. This has included all kinds of foods from basic pureed soup to liver and onions. (I like liver).

* There is no smell from the food until you take the lid off to eat.

* The inner bowl cools quickly. I unplug the warmer, leave the inner container in the warmer while I eat so I don't have to mess with how to remove a hot metal bowl. By the time I finish eating my lunch, the inner bowl is cool enough at the top for me to remove it.

* I like the fact that I don't have to use the work microwave. It saves me time because I used to take a Lysol wipe to the office kitchen counter and a soapy paper towel to the microwave before using it. My office has a high population of folks who bring their own lunch (maybe around 70), which is great for budgets, but not so great when you get skeeved out over the residual gunk that was all over the microwave over the course of the week. With this little warmer, I put my food in the container, and plug it in and it's done. I rinse out the container at work, but it goes in the dishwasher at home. I save 5 to 10 minutes of pre-cleaning the office kitchen space, and I don't have to wait until it's past the "lunch rush".

Cons:

* It would be great if you could buy extra containers for it. I could see myself packing a whole week's worth of containers on Sunday night. There are also some days when I work past dinner, and it would be nice to be able to bring food in a second container. I did buy a second warmer, but I'd rather pay half the price and get extra inner containers.

* Don't heat spinach in it. Turns out bitter.

Other information:

* The lid on the inner container usually pops up slightly after 10 minutes of warming. The instructions did note this might happen and to not try to put the lid back on.

Based on a couple of other reviews stating concerns about bacteria and food safety, I decided to do a little experiment. I put tap water in the inner container and tested the temperature of water every hour for three hours. I also decided to test the temperature of actual food, again testing the temperature every hour for 3 hours. I used a Thermapen Instant Read digital thermometer to measure the temperatures. The results are in the table below. According to the NSF (National Sanitation Foundation) website, precooked foods need to be reheated to 165 °F when using a microwave. The FDA website states that hot foods at picnics should be kept at 140 °F. As you can see from the results I got, the water temperature surpassed the 165°F within an hour. The food surpassed the 140°F within 2 hours, and was just under 165 °F at about the 3 hour mark.

Time ----Temperature Water ----Temperature Food

9:45 am ---- 67.4°F ---------- 36 °F

10:47 am ---168.5°F ---------126.2 °F

11:45 am ---170 °F ---------145.1 °F

12:50 pm ---170.8°F ---------164.9 °F

it's exactly as the other reviewers said...if you're a cubicle dweller and hate hassling with lines at the office microwave, this gadget is for you. It only re-warms food (so no cooking any raw meat here), so if you plug it in when you get in the office in the morning, you'll have a hot lunch waiting for you at lunchtime. And there's absolutely no food cooking smell, so your cubicle neighbors don't know you're cooking lunch. The container seals in all food cooking smells until you open up the crock, at which point, your co-workers will know you're enjoying your lunch. The color isn't exactly as it appears on the photo..on the pix, the red color appears to be crimson/burgundy but it's exactly as described standard red/white (like the Target bulls-eye logo).

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program As you can see from the product image above, this portable, low-power Crock-Pot Food Warmer comes with a twisting outer lid and a short carry-handle. The enclosed inner bowl is removable, about 5 inches in diameter and 3 inches deep, comes with its own push-down / pull-up lid, made of stainless steel, and can hold as much as 20 ounce of cooked meals. The power cord is about 2.5 feet long, and wraps around the cord wrap on the base.

The product is meant for warming cooked food only, and it does this slowly using non-adjustable low-power. The idea is that if you don't have access or don't want to use the office microwave -and don't mind a comparatively longer "wait" time (minimum of 1 hour for most foods, I would say) - for heating up your lunches, this appliance might be an option. When you get to work, for example, you could plug in the appliance right away, so that by lunch time, you'll have a hot meal ready to eat. For convenience, you can leave the warming base at work, and travel back and forth from home and office with the removable food container and lid only (but see caveat below).

Although the product heats up food just fine as is, you should know that the appliance does not have an on/off switch, so you're responsible for plugging and unplugging it if you can't work around this problem by plugging the warmer to a power strip that you can turn on and off (but then again, the warmer's relatively short power cord could be a problem for some). When your food is ready, you most likely have to eat it with the food container still on the warming base, because the container would likely be too hot to touch. This was sometimes a negative for me.

The food container's push-down / pull-up lid does not provide a really tight cover, so when you're transporting foods with liquids or sauces, make sure you keep the container in a secure, upright position. Finally, a food container that can also double as a microwaveable container can be a real life-saver when one is in a pinch for time and happens to have access to a microwave!

Honest reviews on Crock-Pot SCCPLC200-G 20-Ounce Lunch Crock Food Warmer

I'm a technician and work out of my van. i plug this little guy into a power inverter in my van and off i go. I used to have to mess around every morning with a food jar if i wanted a hot home made meal. Boil the water. Pour the hot water into the food jar and let sit for 15 minutes. Microwave food and then pour out the water and try to spoon in the food through the narrow neck. Now i just dump my leftovers into the food container, take it outside and plug it in. around lunch time my food is piping hot.

Pros:

Save money by bringing food to work instead of eating out.

Heats food throughout the day, unlike the food jar where it's hot in the morning and cooler at lunch.

NO MICROWAVED FOOD TASTE! Heats slowly and evenly without making food chewy or tough.

Cons:

Cheeses and cream sauces tend to separate.

Food can leak out if it turns over.

Can't take a meal with separate sides. Nit Picky i guess.

I honestly couldn't love this thing more. I use it almost every day. I found a nice little collapsible spork meant for camping that fits between the outer lid and the inner. Fantastic product you will not regret buying. EVER.

Received this as a gift from my wife for Christmas. Since I'm a cube dweller, she figured this would be a fun and functional little desk accessory, and she was right! I've only used it once so far but it worked exactly as advertised last night's leftover casserole was perfectly heated by lunchtime. The only knock I have on it so far is that it lacks an on/off switch, and therefore has to be plugged in/unplugged for use, which I can see being relatively inconvenient if you're going to use the crock more than occasionally.

I like this heater. I have a table top propane heater and this heater puts out 3 times more heat and starts up almost immediately. The only down fault I have with this heater, is it does not look that great. Looks to much like a commercial tool instead of something you would like to see on your patio. Could try and conceal some of the wiring.

This is a great little heater. It puts off good heat directly in front of it, but a lot of heat escapes up. So it works great in my patio that is covered, but fair to ok out in the courtyard. The craftsmanship it self is simple and light weight. I would not say it is delicate, but all the components are light weight and not designed to withstand major abuse. It is easy to use, but would be awesome if it had click starters instead of using a long lighter. I have only used it a handful of times, but I would recommend it so far.

Easy to install on tank; fairly easy to light; just don't have your hair in the line of fire! :-) Throws out a lot of heat.

This product turned out to work perfectly. It arrived on time and it works as it should. A quartz heater is the only solution for a loft where you need to heat the room rather than all the heat going upstairs!

However, this particular quartz heater (unlike the ones I've had before) is fan-forced, which in my opinion is not as desirable because of the noise issue. It is not noisy as some fan heaters, but I would have preferred the quiet kind, they works just as well. Maybe in my enthusiasm, I didn't check that very carefully...I don't remember seeing 'fan-forced' in the description but I could be wrong.....anyway, that's why I am changing my rating to 4.

Honeywell Whole Room Heater, 18 x 18 x 19 1/2, Gray
Customer Ratings: 3 stars

There is a major flaw in the design of the Honeywell Whole Room Heater HZ-725. The heater is triggered to shut down completely when it overheats and you cannot reset it yourself. Honeywell recommends you have an electrician check out your electrical system when this occurs. Your only option is to return the heater to Honeywell at your expense plus an additional fee. Honeywell will then reset/repair and return the heater to you.

This heater worked for me for less than one week before completely shutting down. There was nothing I could do to get it started again. My home's electrical system with 3-prong plug outlets was in perfect working order when this occurred.

The problem with returning the heater to Honeywell for repair when this problem occurs is when you get it back from Honeywell, won't the same thing just happen all over again?

It is not my fault the heater triggered overheat; it is the fault of the heater and Honeywell. It is not my fault I cannot reset the heater when it triggers overheat; it is the fault of the heater design and Honeywell.

Do not make the mistake of buying this heater. BEWARE!

Worked really well for 2 months, and then stopped. The company (KAZ) sent a replacement, which again stopped working after 2 months. Save yourself time and money don't buy it...

Best Deals for Honeywell Whole Room Heater, 18 x 18 x 19 1/2, Gray (HZ-725)

The short review:

Worked great for a month, then it overheated and wouldn't turn on. Apparently, once it overheats, the on/off switch will melt shut, forcing you to either send it in or trash it for a new one. Quality of this heater is low.

The long(er) review:

I bought this heater at a local store, not on Amazon.com, but the review still stands. It worked great for the majority of the winter. Heats a small room fairly quickly on the highest heat setting, but it has no digital display to set an exact temperature setting. It also does not heat the floor, unlike cheaper, similar units. If you leave the heater on overnight, you run the risk of melting the on/off switch into the off position. This can be fixed, but you only have 2 choices if you want to fix it.

1) Send the heater in to Kaz/Honeywell, let them force you to pay $10 to fix the heater, along with postage paid by you and be out of heat for a few days/weeks OR

2) Open it up, voiding the warranty, and fix it yourself.

I chose option 2 and after cleaning off the melted plastic (!!) inside the switch (!!), the heater works once again. It's not easy, but who can complain about a working heater?

Update: 6/2/2011

We've had a few weird months of weather here and I had to use the heater a few times. On one of those days with abnormally cold weather, this heater decided to quit and wouldn't work, no matter how much poking and prodding I did to the switch. I finally bypassed the switch altogether and got the heater to work again.

Bad bad bad design.

Honest reviews on Honeywell Whole Room Heater, 18 x 18 x 19 1/2, Gray (HZ-725)

The header works great... until it triggers its overheat flaw and never works again. I guess I triggered that overheat flaw mentioned a few times in other reviews (which doesn't make any sense since I had it on a fairly low heat setting at the time). And like everybody else, I can't fix the problem myself. All it does now is uselessly take up space in my room. So my options are now (1) spend money I don't have on a new heater in mid-March right before the weather starts to get warm again or (2) wait out the cold weather for a little bit longer and save my money. Either way, I'm not buying another Honeywell heater ever again. I bought this heater in January and now on March 14th it no longer works.

This heater might work well in a smaller, enclosed room, but it did absolutely nothing for my open dining room. One of its flaws is that the heat is emitted from the top, so if you're trying to get your feet warm (Important! helps your whole body warm up), you're out of luck, as the top of the heater is about two feet off the floor. Also, I don't know if it's just a personal preference of mine or if there really is a difference in efficacy, but heaters that BLOW as opposed to those that just RADIATE seem to warm me, and the room, more quickly and efficiently.

As for the other reviewers mentioning that theirs broke after a short period of time, I'm not even going to comment on that, as I've only had mine for a day. But between the shortcomings I've noticed myself and those I've read about, I'm not going to take any chances. This thing is getting returned as soon as I can get it back into the box. I only wish I'd read the reviews before I purchased.

We've been using this kettle at work just fine. It's very light weight but has a tall receptacle that holds the kettle well so we're not concerned about tip over.

It boils incredibly fast & has a nice comfortable handle & easy to use lid release.

Make sure you follow the initial instructions to boil 3x letting cool each time, before the first use to remove any foul taste.

The element is not "protected" so we'd expect scale to build up, but that's easily cleaned.

Only gripe is that the filter seems to fall out when tipped upside down. Even so, can recommend this kettle as a low cost but perfectly functional kettle.

Let's start with context: I'm British so having a kettle is not optional and I have a lifetime's experience of kettles!

When we arrived in the US 14 months ago our accommodation didn't have a kettle and we didn't know any local shops so we immediately ordered this kettle. Less than 14 months later I have had to buy a new kettle as this one became temperamental about switching on a couple of months ago and finally refused altogether. It had always felt pretty shoddy and light-weight on a par with the kind of cheap kettle I took to college some 25 years ago, (very few like this are sold any more t'other side of the pond bottom end of the market only, costing less than $15 final price.) For between $16 and $20 final price you can easily get much better and more stylish ones over there.

Anyway, back to this kettle. On/off switch is very flimsy and easily comes out of its holding clips. It has an exposed element so it gets "furred up" easily. It's base is so flimsy that the plastic covering of the connecting point was already bent and distorted when we received it. Boil time is pretty average, (actually pretty slow if you're used to British kettles.) Scale screen broke within a couple of months when my husband's finger went through it when he was taking it out to clean it.

I have replaced it with a Hamilton Beach one from a famous discount store for $20. It's a far better kettle: sturdier, faster boiling, concealed element, metal gauze scale screen which should prevent accidental breakage, it's the central mount type rather than the jug type which is far more convenient and it's a lot more stylish (shape and it's stainless steal and black.) Spend your $20 on the HB one!

It does what it is supposed to do at a good price. Bought two; one for my parents and one for me.

I use it at least 2-3 times per day. Much faster than either the electric stove or gas range although I do miss the whistling kettle sound.

The cordless feature and level window were two of the deciding factors besides price.

Initial downsides, it took several boiling cycles to get rid of the plastic smell. It is fine now. Once the boil is done it doesn't keep the water piping hot for long.

Honest reviews on Kalorik Cordless Jug Kettle, White, 57-Oz.

I bought this for my latest tour in lovely Afghanistan at home I have a glass and steel beauty, and I was missing it (and the easy availablity of hot beverages).

I followed the advice of other reviewers, and boiled (the same water in my case it is at a premium here!) three + times before drinking from it. That did the job: no taint of leeching plastic.

It is very inexpensive, the base is wide enough to keep it rock solid on my makeshift table (a scrap of 3/8" plywood held up by nylon cord to the rafters of my tent). I hasn't tipped once in any weather, though trying to seat it on the electrical connector from a seated position next to it is not easy need to be standing to use it properly.

It is well designed doesn't direct hot steam on your hand while you pour, and the little mesh screen that snaps into place to cover the spout does well at keeping dust and bugs out of the kettle. The handle is comfortable to the touch.

I am enjoying this cheapie champion very much, and for the price: you will too. I even think it looks pretty sharp much better than the 220V ugly, steam-throwing no-automatic-shutoff deathtrap I bought in Iraq last time (just because something is made by a German company does not guarantee it is well-engineered!)

This is a great kettle for the price. I have no complaints.

For about a year now, I have been using a Melitta kettle I got at a department store for $20. It is wonderful and gets used sometimes several times a day. I bought this kettle for my office; I assumed for the same price I could get a kettle of equal value. Instead, this kettle works well barely well enough to keep.

Probably the most disappointing thing is the large exposed coil, which looks very difficult to clean and requires that there be at least 1L in the pot for me to feel safe boiling water. It does shut off correctly after water boils, but it is difficult to see the light that is supposed to indicate that it is on, and the base design makes it somewhat awkward to use.

I have used many heaters for ice fishing for my tents and of all the ones I have used this one is by far the best one I have ever used. It puts off plenty of heat for a 2 man, 3 man, and 4 man ice fishing tents with no problem it does so well that after about 25 minutes to 35 minutes of use in an ice fishing tent my buddies and I have to turn it down to either low or off because this heater WILL bake you out of the tent LOL. I have also used this in camping tents with no problems at all, we usually run the heater for about 35 minutes to get the tent nice and warm then turn it off and get into our sleeping bags. Just make sure that you don't kick this over after you turn it off in a camping tent it stays warm for awhile and it will melt/burn the hell out of your tent. I highly recommend this heater for anybody that camps or ice fishes in high altitude areas, unlike other heaters that have touchy low oxygen sensors and shut off and have a hard time reigniting this one will not give you ANY problems igniting and staying lit in a high altitude area. I have used other Mr. Heaters with the ceramic plates and most of them are crap if you are in high altitude areas, they work good in lower altitude areas but this one will give you no problems no matter where you are.

After reading Mirielle Guiliano's memoir about food, entitled "French Women Don't Get Fat" and feeling annoyance over the loss of Total Greek Yogurt on the shelves of my local Whole Food (this is temporary), I decided to buy this yogurt maker and simply make my own.

The procedure is a simple one; heat some milk until bubbles appear on the side of the pan and steam actually rises; take off the stove and pop in the included thermometer. When the milk temperature lowers to a specific window indicated on the thermometer, add some milk to 2 tablespoons of purchased plain yogurt or yogurt starter. Mix and then add to the milk in the pan.

As the yogurt maker has slots for 8 containters with lids, simply pour an equal amount of the milk from the pan, put on the lids, cover the yogurt maker and plug the machine in.

The machine sits on a counter; I advise parking it in a place where the digital controls are not interferred with as just one little push will turn the whole thing off. I set my yogurt to "cook" for 14 hours. The result: Great consistancy and flavor that matches store bought without the preservatives and other additives.

The machine includes includes instructions on how to make flavored yogurt; it seems simple, but I have not tried it.

Bottom line: this machine does the trick with little or no fuss. I also purchased the yogurt cheese maker which will allow me to turn my homemade yogurt into a spread that I can use on bread in the AM. Doesn't get any better!

I must admit, I was skeptical. Over the years, I've eaten so much yogurt; in the last two years, I've switched to plain yogurt as most others have so much sugar. It's hard to find plain yogurt that tastes great--both the taste and the texture have to be just so. The best-tasting option I've found is a brand sold at Whole Foods; it's expensive, and it seems that the full-fat version is the only kind with the right texture.

When I read the book "French Girls Don't Get Fat", I thought I'd give homemade yogurt a try and save a little money (sort of like buying an espresso machine, rather than buying a $3 latte at Starbucks every day!)

Yesterday I made my first batch with the Donvier Yogurt Maker. First of all, it's SO simple. Three ingredients: Milk, milk powder, and starter (I used 2T of my regular brand). Four simple steps:

1. Stir the milk powder into the milk (I used non-fat milk, and the non-fat milk powder makes the yogurt creamier)

2. Heat the milk until it almost boils

3. Cool the milk till it reaches 110--simple to gauge, using the thermometer included with the machine--then add the starter

4. Pour into the cups, and let the machine do its work!

I mixed the batch up in the morning, and by the evening I could move the cups to the fridge to chill. This morning I was treated to fresh yogurt; the creamiest, freshest tasting yogurt I've ever had, and it was non-fat with NO additives!

I highly recommend this machine. If you like yogurt, you'll love what you can make at home with the Donvier!

Best Deals for Cuisipro Donvier Electronic Yogurt Maker

I recently purchased the DONVIER after reading the French diet book. Like another reviewer...I too use whole organic milk. I do not heat the milk on the stove in a pan...too messy. What I do instead is to put all of the milk into a large Pyrex measuring cup, pop it in the microwave for 6 minutes and it is ready to go. I did not buy the starter, instead, I use a couple of teaspoons from the last jar that I am going to use, whisk it all in the Pyrex, double check the temp. and pour it into the cups.

Honest reviews on Cuisipro Donvier Electronic Yogurt Maker

This yogurt maker gives poor results. I used whole milk and added milk powder, as the booklet suggests. It heated it to nearly boiling, cooled it to the suggested temp with the thermometer supplied, added in the powdered yogurt culture that came with the machine, and cooked it in the little cups for 12 hours. All very easy to do. In the end, I had four cups of decent yogurt from the middle pots, and four cups of liquid from the outer ones. It appears that the machine's main problem is too low a temperature, and even lower temps on the outer parts of the machine.

Also, the recipe calls for 1 quart of milk, and that only half fills the little cups.

I'm going to try making yogurt in my toaster oven, which has a 100F setting, and see how that works. I'm disappointed that this little machine doesn't do the one thing it's supposed to do heat the 8 cups and produce yogurt after 10 hours.

Edited August 2008: I have been successfully making yogurt in my regular oven, by mixing 1 1/2 quart milk and a 1/2 cup Activia yogurt as the original starter culture, then filling small Rubbermaid snack cups and putting on the lids. I use only the oven light and leave the cups overnight (6-8 hours). Excellent yogurt, easy to make, and without any more appliances cluttering up my kitchen. I keep my starter going by using the last cup of my homemade yogurt mixed into milk for the next batch.

I cannot say enough good things about this item, even though I purchased it somewhat tentatively and my husband thought it would be the next big white elephant. I decided on this product as it seemed to offer a few extras for slightly more cost (thermometer, timer, etc.). I have been making yogurt every week since however and it could not be easier, fresher or better tasting. I have followed the directions included with the maker and have not had any problems (organic skim milk, organic milk powder and yogurt as starter. Heat milk in microwave 8 minutes, "cook" in maker for 10 1/2 hours). The yogurt is firm, I think comparable to American store versions. My four year old eats it on his cereal instead of milk and asks for it for snacks, eating right out of the container. I also purchased the additional set of yogurt cups so I could make a new batch while still eating the rest.

I would like to add I am not an organic go-getter. We've recently been making some changes based on a general concern for how often we are exposed to chemicals, etc. in our and our children's lives. The yogurt maker has given us one more way to feel secure in and expand our choices. Enjoy!

I love the heater. I have different heaters propane torpedo heaters (garage), oil and ceramic heaters with thermostat, w/o thermostat and digital. We have them all!

This heater does an excellent job! I have one for one of my clients because it can be very cold in the summer months. I can direct the heat. (I hocked this from the great room. I am buying another one.) The passive, space heater takes too long. The heat rises and the ceiling fans have to redirect the heat downward. Otherwise the air at the ceiling needs to get warm first and work its way down. (I have 12 foot ceilings in that room.) With this heater, the heat is directed at the couches while we watch TV.

One problem: the circuit breaker will trip with 2 heaters. If we want 2 heaters, we have to run only run or run an extension cord from another outlet on a different circuit.

One benefit: The settings knob goes from off, fan, low and high. The fan setting is to cool the heating element before turning unit off.

NOTE: The bedrooms have oil heaters with a thermostat. The temperature is different in each room depending on the child. The hallway bath has one also with an "agreed upon" temperature. In the master bedroom, the oil heater is on a timer since my wife and I work. It comes on between 5:30 and 6:30 and also between 7:30 and 8:30. We may get this heater in the master bedroom to this heater and direct it at the shower stall.
