Sorry to say this heater was not a winner. It did arrive on time and in perfect condition. However upon first use and every subsequent use there after it was very loud and had a horrible rattling sound like it was going to come apart violently. It also produced very little heat, having another heater similar to this one that works wonderfully, I am aware of what a heater like this should put out for heat. I would not suggest this heater to anyone, in fact i would suggest the Fahrenheat Ceiling-Mount 5000 Watt Electric Heater, Model# FUH5-4. I have had the Fahrenheat unit for over six month's now and it perform's as advertised without a single failure.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program This is a bit a "buyer beware" review. This heater requires an electrical configuration (essentially having a "dryer plug" kind of socket in your wall).

Not many garages have that. Mine didn't. In fairness, the description explains this and I missed it.

If I were going to pay for an electrician to install the proper power, I'd likely ponder some other solution that wouldn't be as expensive. This only heats a small area, so the only other area I could see value is a basement, maybe unplugging the dryer. The best situation for this would be for a workshop, or if you use your garage extensively to do work. That would justify the expense of the electrical work. To simply not see your breath on cold days when you go to get in your car--this is probably not worth the trouble or expense.

It's the first week of November and we've already been using this heater in our garage for the past few weeks. We've even seen small amounts of snow a few times this fall. In Minnesota, winter is always just around the corner. It gets crazy cold here. Forty below zero at night is not foreign to this area of the state during the heart of winter. It gets so cold, the foundation of homes and the concrete slab floors of garages can buckle. In the video I've attached to this review, you can actually see that the foundation of our own garage floor has buckled and left us with a crack down the center that looks like we were hit with a Californian earthquake. So spending any time at all outside in the garage in the winter requires some form of heat, if nothing else so your fingers don't go numb while trying to work in the cold.

Prior to this heater we had a torpedo heater. It was great and put out a ton of heat, but if you're familiar with those, you know they produce heat using a large open flame. Torpedo flames in a garage filled with flammable things weren't the safest way to go. Especially since one wrong step from your kids and they could walk into it and catch a leg on fire. The second heater we used was meant for ice fishing. A portable propane heater. It was actually our ice fishing heater, but it doubled as our garage heater for a while. Expensive way to heat the garage.

Now we have this NewAir electric heater, and it's so much better. No open flame to catch a pants leg on fire and no need to keep switching out propane tanks. Also unlike the other two heaters, this one has an overheat safety setting and regulates the heating element by sensing the air temperature. Be sure to take note of the shape of the 240 volt plug. We have a outlet in our garage for this, but it has a different shaped receptacle. Ours was designed for use with a welder. So we ended up buying a different plug for the end of this heater and switching it out to work with our welding outlet.

When the blower is the only thing going on this heater, it's pretty quiet. Like a simple fan. When the heating element turns on is when you can really hear it. But I wouldn't call it loud. It's a garage heater encased in a metal box, usually sitting on the garage floor. It's going to make a little noise. But it's not like it's so loud two people talking right beside it even need to raise their voice to hear one another.

The casing stays cool to the touch. You won't get burned from touching the metal even after the heater has been running for hours. The carrying handle on the top is bolted on, so it's well affixed. The power cable is fairly short (I believe for safety reasons), so you'll need to have a spot for this within a few feet of your outlet.

As for how it heats, we've liked it so far. However we don't expect it (or most any portable heater) to heat a 2 car garage to 72 degrees when it's -40 deg blow zero outside. This heater takes the chill off and keeps your blood moving. The closer you stand to it, the warmer you'll be. Work on the opposite side of the garage right next to the door and the air won't feel as warm. We turn it on when it's cold and leave it running while we're out there working. Plug it in and get it going a little while before someone's going to be in the garage so it has time to start warming up the air. It's waterfowl season right now, so my husbands been out in the garage in the evenings for hours each night working on tying up decoys and working on the motor of his boat. He's had the heater running each evening while doing this to help keep it warm while he's out there, and it's been working very well. No problems so far. We like this heater MUCH better than the propane and torpedo heaters we had in the past.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program This thing is well built. Note that it requires a 240 outlet before you order. But it puts out the heat let me tell you. My son came over and mounted it up about 2/3 of the way up the wall opposite the garage door in a corner about 3 feet forward from the wall and plugged it in. (he did put a support bracket up for the top and bottom of the unit) We fired it up and tho it makes noise there was no rattle and the level's nothing you can't live with and I soon was used to it. It's a bit early for heating here in the mountains of Colorado but we did have a morning low of 39 and this was around 6:30 in the morning before he went to work. Took about ten minutes to heat up the Garage from about 45 to 65 degrees and then we turned it off because it was going to go back up in the 80's later in the day and it wouldn't be needed. So right now I'm pleased with it and this winter when we dip down below freezing I'll give it it's real test and if there are problems I'll come back and redo this review. Right now I can report it's solid, well built, the controls are convenient and the thermostat worked pretty darn good cycling it off when it reached 65. I would certainly recommend this unit at this price point...just remember you need that 240 outlet handy to use it.

Here is my situation:

I love in northern MN. It gets COLD. I have a 30x60 uninsulated garage/pole barn with 15+ ceilings and a cement floor. I made a "bubble" work area 400 sq.ft (20x20x9) using 4mil plastic within the garage. The heater arrived quickly and in good shape. I already had a 50amp circuit but downsized that to a 30amp and attached the correct female receptacle to fit the unit. Very simply.

I have been impressed with this little heater. I do not find it to be too loud, considering it is made for a garage setting. Some days the temps were in the negatives with windchills in the -20's and in my "bubble" the temp was at least 30 deg. I have recently put studs and insulation between joists at 9ft for the ceiling. This has really helped. The outside temps are in the 20's but "bubble" is in the 50-60 range.

I have not used any other garage heater so I have nothing to compare too. I do not run this thing all day/night. For the most part, I run it a few hours before I plan to "work" in the "bubble" and the temps has risen to a workable level for me (35 deg +). Remember, my "bubble" is simply within my garage, no insulation (except ceiling) and is definitely not air tight.

I have only had this for about 2 weeks but I have been satisfied for my application. I will update this post in the future as I use it more, insulate the room, and receive an electric bill.

I would recommend this product, but I would probably recommend the similar RED heater for $30 less. I read the product info wrong on the RED one and purchased this unit instead. Either way, it is doing what I need.

UPDATE: (3/25/13)

I have had this unit a little over a month. I have taken down the "bubble" mentioned in the last email and finished off half of the garage. The area is now approx. 30x30 (900 SQFT). The area is insulated with rigid foam board (R6 in walls R4 board and R11 fiberglass insulation in ceiling ceilings are 9ft). My point is that the insulation is NOT GREAT. The heater is able to heat the entire area about 40 deg warmer than the outside temp. Unfortunately I haven't been able to test this heater when the temps were below zero with the area being insulated. This heater is stated to heat an area 500 sq feet but my area is almost 900 sq ft and it does the job to take the chill out of the area (even with a cement floor). Two of these heaters would EASILY heat my area to any temp (70 deg) no matter what the temp is outside. Remember, I live in a COLD area. I would still recommend this unit. I don't know exactly how much my electric bill went up but it did go up (not an outrageous amount). The only thing I would like to change on this unit would be when you turn it off the fan stops running but the area around the unit is still hot as it cools off could be dangerous if you are not in the room I suspect all heaters are similar to this though.
