This kettle is sold under many different names, GTC, Continental, Maxi-Matic, Proctor Silex, Sunbeam and Rival to name a few. They are all the same unit with a different screen printed name on the front.
I thought about getting a hot pot to boil water for my coffee instead of using the microwave and I limped in with this $10 purchase. The idea is sound and I will be buying another hot pot but this product was a waste of money. After the first week I started seeing an orange ring around the bottom hot plate, I later found out this was rust, which I have been drinking. After two weeks the unit would only work intermittently. I figured out while moving it around that water was coming out of the bottom. I took it apart and realized that the plastic pot interfaces with the hot metal heating element at a cheap silicone seal that had failed. This would also explain the foul taste in the boiled water. The heating element had rusted up between the seal and the metal.
There's no doubt that if I had continued to use this it would have been possible that water could have seeped out and I could have grounded on it and gotten a good shock. Do not buy this. Amazon should remove it.

I purchased two of these in the past 24 months. Both have failed prematurely. I contacted Sunbeam directly and included the make, model and date on the plug. I received an email asking me to supply the make, model and date on the plug.?????I submitted the info again and have yet to hear back. Poor quality, poor customer service. Sunbeam was once a trusted brand.Now it appears they don't even care.

About 2.5 years ago I bought my first hot-pot Sunbeam it was at the local Walgreen store in Brooklyn, NY to boil water for my coffee and tea. I used it exclusively to boil water. One year later I noticed, that the non-sticky round bottom part, inside the pot, the part that actually heats the water started to get rusty I was totally appalled, that the material used for such item was not safer and basically a health hazard. I complaint with the store, the Sunbeam company and the Consumer Affairs yet no-one did anything ! The Sunbeam hot pots are still on the Walgreen store' shelf !!
I opted to buy a different brand the next hotpot was made by "Continental Electrics" and I hoped that my previous experience had been an isolated incident.
Surprise!! yesterday, Jun 18, 2011 I noticed that my "Continental Electrics" hot pot's inside hot plate is starting to rust as well on the outer borders, where it touches the plastic bottom it is fitted into .
Now this hot pot is not even one year old and I consider it total irresponsibility that the makers of such kitchen ware dare to sell such garbage to the public! I consider it even more lamentable, that the Consumer Affairs "ignored" the issue altogether.
There are people out there who use these hot pots to boil water for their children!
Someone tell me please: Whenever was "rust" healthy? If "Sunbeam" and "continental" cannot use safe materials for their kitchen appliances then they should not be allowed to produce this kind of appliances!
?? Are these the same products, just with a different name printed on it??
I do not have a problem with the re-seller, I have a huge problem with the manifacturers and our Governmental agencies that should control the products to keep the consumers safe.
By the way no I did not use the hotpot for anything else but boiling water! I clean it with soap and water, as directed. There was no corrosive material touching the inside of my hotpot!!

The Sunbeam Hot Pot Express changed the way I cook. As a college student, I am always on the go and looking for ways to create meals in a short period of time without resorting to the nearest takeout menu. This hot pot takes less than two minutes to boil water which is perfect for pastas, soups and teas. I'm continually impressed with how fast it works and the little effort it takes to clean afterwords. It's small size stores well in my cabinets and has essentially replaced my old pots.
I received this as a high school graduation presents and 4 years later it still works. The only complaint I have is how certain food products have to be monitored or the circular heating plate may burn it. I found that thicker substances like chili and thick soups need to be on the lowest heat or a crusty film will develop on the bottom. This is particularly tricky to scrape off, like normal pots and pans.
Other than that, it is perfect for convenience-seekers and impatient cookers.

This product is made under many different names but basically they are all the same.
My original Sunbeam hot pot lasted several years, but it finally died.
In November of 2012 I bought a new one. It worked fine but after three weeks it started leaking.
I took it back and got a replacement one. The replacement lasted two weeks, It started leaking
and a red corrosion could be seen forming around the heating ring looking like rust.
I took it back, I am now on my third pot since November. The salesman tells me this is a new
and improved version. We shall see. Apparently the problem is the seal between the heating ring
and the base of the pot. This seal has failed on both pots I purchased and I am wondering how
long the "new and improved" version will last.
I love the function of the hot pot, very convenient for quickly heating water for coffee or soup.
When my current one fails I will shop for a better and probably more expensive version.
