I purchased this product at Christmas and my husband and I have enjoyed it very much so far. It throws off just enough extra heat to keep our living room warm so that we don't have to turn up our electric heat during these cold nights. I also love the ambiance it creates. I ordered this faux fireplace heater for my son's room. The reviews were solid, and the heating system was fire safe.

However, they fail to mention that the "oak finish" is cheap veneer, not oak.

And NO ONE mentioned anywhere in the advertisement here that the unit arrives UNASSEMBLED!!!!

I am concerned because the unit I bought two years ago from AMAZON was solid oak (not a cheap finish), and it came fully assembled.

I cannot yet comment on the heater itself, but I did want to warn prospective buyers that the quality of "oak finish" has been downgraded without clarification or any change in the language.

I will add an update in a few days after we have had a chance to use it.

I have now had a chance to assemble the device, and to use it in my son's room for more than a week of cool weather.

First, the assembly is not easy. There are 80 pieces in the box, mainly screws (55 main screws, + 3 smaller ones), so be prepared to dedicate at least an hour to the work.

I was not impressed with the durability of the heater once constructed. It is heavy, and it is not designed for major relocations once it is constructed.

On the other hand, and despite the faux oak finish, it really is a beautiful addition to my son's room. He LOVES it--and uses the false flame as a night light to hypnotize him to sleep. It is quite nice to sit in a darkened room and stair at the "fire." The heater and thermostat also work well. My ten-year-old was able to operate the controls out of the box. Another plus.

As a result, I have raised the review from 2 stars to 4 stars. I still take off some credit for the faux finish, the lack of warning about assembly required. But the product does overall deliver the quality you hope and expect.

This unit is very sturdy and beautiful... but you better be prepared to turn up the television! The heater is quite loud. I owned another brand unit for years it was not nearly as loud. I am keeping it because it is so attractive.

I picked up this beauty at a local Bed Bath (discounted floor model) for $240 and was really excited to bring it home to replace my vintage aluminum fan that is so painfully hard to clean.

Once I set it up and ran it in my bedroom, I was really disappointed in the noise it made. I didn't notice the high-pitch "whirrrr" in the store, most likely because of all the surrounding ambient noise, but when focused in my bedroom, this high-pitched "hair dryer" tone was very off-putting. When stepping out of my bedroom, that high-pitch carries into the rest of my apartment, and becomes quite grating.

This is a deal-breaker for me. It's not so much the volume of sound, but the pitch/tone of the sound. Even on it's lowest setting, this high-pitched tone does NOT promote relaxation and calm, it is irritating and very difficult for me to sleep to. When the output dial is turned up, the pitch becomes higher and the overall volume becomes really loud, so loud it becomes almost impossible to tune out unless I crank the stereo or t.v. up. The sound is like a mini jet engine. Cute, but not practical for sonic well-being.

It's a shame, because the design is amazing, the materials are really nice, the build quality is very solid. I love the ease of use, the buttons are simple, functional, fun to interact with.

In form it's fabulous, in function, it's a fiasco. Dyson seriously needs to consider the aural effects of the high-pitched tone this product emits. Hopefully future models will address this issue, until then, I'm giving my ears a break and returning this noisy lovely thing.

This fan is no air multiplier. See all those holes around the base of the fan? Those are the air inlets for the blower which they've thoughtfully hidden in the base. You can't get something for nothing and that includes air.

Compared with a clip-on 6" fan, this fan is a waste of both money and space. That little clip-on costs $20 and moves 190 cubic feet per minute. The Dyson moves 40 cubic feet per minute (or as Dyson specifies: 5 gallons per second). Comparably sized tabletop fans move over a thousand cubic feet per minute.

Don't be fooled by the store displays. Those streamers are placed around the edge for a reason that's the only place where the air is moving! Stand a few feet away from this fan and you will literally feel nothing.

Meanwhile, it's loud. That little 6" fan produces 37 decibels of sound. The Dyson is closer to 50. That's more than twice as loud (decibels are a log scale, every 10 is a doubling).

It's intriguing that some are so taken with this fan. It would have some benefits. It won't muss your hair, and it's unlikely to ruffle your papers. But let's be real this is a fan, not a vase of flowers.

Buy this fan only if you prioritize owning a statement piece over owning a functioning fan.

I have one of these on my desk at work set on a low setting creating a delightfully gentle breeze. I'm using it to improve the efficiency of the air-conditioning distribution. It is completely silent in the manner I operate it.

On higher speed settings this device does get noisy but to be honest no noisier than a comparably sized traditional fan.

Some of the comments left by others point to confusion over what this device is. This is not a bladeless fan. Instead it's a fan where there's no visible blade. The device works by using a small fan internal to the mechanism to create movement over the airfoil shaped hoop and that air movement creates suction that brings a far greater volume of air through the hoop than the internal fan creates itself. Dyson don't call this a fan, they call it an air multiplier; and that's exactly what it is.

This device is very elegant in its design and it works as advertised. This is not a replacement for a big or noisy fan that can move a huge volume of air this is a device for moving a small amount of air in manner that's pleasant to experience.

If you need to move a massive amount of air around a large area then you'll need a traditional fan. If you want spot cooling and the outrageous price is acceptable then this is a well suited device.

I own this Dyson fan no doubt it will end up in the Museum of Modern Art. It is a beauty but the noise is terrible. A hotel I stayed at recently had one of these in the room. I normally sleep with a ceiling fan or floor fan running, so when I entered the room and saw this, I thought it'd be perfect. Not so.

First, let's address why you probably are looking at this fan -it doesn't look like anything else out there. Very slick. It's not exactly tiny, but it has an attractive modern design that makes it more acceptable to have out than a traditional fan. It certainly shows what happens when you get some creative types to develop products. We could use more style-conscious designs in everyday items.

BUT, it's noisy, very much so compared to the volume of air it puts out. The noise it makes is a hum + air moving, but rather higher-pitched compared to most fans. I found it to be more intrusive than the Vornado fans I have around the house. Not quite as obnoxious as a hair dryer, but similar in sound, just quieter. If Dyson had used a larger base, they could have used a larger fan that wouldn't have made as much noise. Or a squirrel-cage blower which would have been nearly silent.

It doesn't put out much air. While I didn't have another fan at the hotel to compare it with, an equivalent-size Vornado puts out as much air on low as the Dyson puts out on high, but with far less noise. I barely felt the Dyson all the way across the room. Heard it clearly though. Vornado fans actually use an "air multiplying" design, but they use it to feed air into the fan blades rather than the output. Not exactly a new idea here.

The toughest obstacle is the price. This price is completely out of line. The build quality of this fan isn't anywhere near worth what they're asking for it. Entirely made of plastic. Couldn't cost more than twenty bucks to make this in China. It feels like it'd break/crack if got tipped over and landed on a hard surface. I also question the longevity of this fan. Larger, lower RPM motors generally last longer. This fan has a very small motor that runs at high RPMs to move enough air for it to work. Similarly, the air intake on the base of the fan uses very small holes. I'd imagine these would clog easily, putting even more strain on the motor. I have Vornado fans which have been going non-stop for about 10 years now. I don't see this fan lasting that long.

Overall, slick appearance and unusual thinking, but falls short -WAY short when you consider the price. Quite a shame. At 10-20% of their asking price, these would be a good buy. At that point you could forgive the poor performance for the slick aesthetics. Until then I'll gladly keep using the Vornado fans I've been using for the past 10 years.

We bought this heater to use in our living room and kitchen/dining area. We have all baseboard heat and our heating bills are usually through the roof. This heater does a good job and we are very happy, but there are a few things to point out.

1. It is a smaller heater than you might expect. It is half the price of an eden pure...but be advised that it's about half the size of the eden pure my parents have. That said, I think I'd rather have two of these than one eden pure that way I can space them out more.

2. This thing won't heat a 1000 sq/ft area. We use it in a 250-300 sq/ft living room that has an opening to our kitchen dining room that is about 250 sq/ft. It will heat up the room and maintain when it is as cold as the 20's outside...colder than that and we need to use our baseboard w/ this heater to get it up to temp (in about 10 minutes mind you)...and then this heater will do a great job of maintaining that heat on it's own. We did this down to about 4-5 degrees(F) outside and it worked great.

3. Haven't got a clue on heating bill, but it does draw some serious current. I have blown our breaker more than once by using this heater and our vacuum on the same outlet (always forget the heater is on...see 4)

4. Heater is very quiet and you won't even realize the thing is on except for seeing the orange glow back inside of the heater.

5. The wheels are awesome. We usually heat the living room for a few hours, then wheel it into the kitchen dining room for 20 minutes, then back for a couple hours.....super easy to do as you walk by and keeps both rooms at a comfy 71-74 degrees.

Bottom line is it is a great heater. It is drawing a lot of current but probably not more than 2 baseboard heaters that we virtually don't use now.....which have their own breaker each. I'd recommend it highly as it really gives you the cozy feeling that you don't get with those heaters that heat the air....compared to this one that heats you and the objects in the room. You can really tell the difference.

...you need to invest a little time in thinking about 1) what it is you want it to do and, 2) coming to grips with what it is actually capable of.

A lot of people buy this heater (24%) after looking at the EdenPure portable electric space heater. I am guessing that those who do are looking to save about fifty bucks over the cost of the EdenPure and believe (correctly) that it is a virtual replica of the EdenPure. And that would be just wonderful if the EdenPure portable electric space heater (and this one) lived up to the hype that surrounds it. The problem is neither one does...they are both being promoted with false premises.

In fact, some claims are pure lies. Take this one: "Testing shows, the Dr. HeaterTM has 60% more heat output compared to most other heaters on the market." Ask yourself, what testing and compared to what heaters? You should be highly suspicious anytime a claim such as this is made without reference to the actual testing. Who did the testing? When was the testing done? What heaters were tested in comparison to this one? Odds are that there was never any testing done because the claim they are making is ridiculous. Here's why: Electric heat is electric heat no matter how you slice it or dice it. The only way that a 1500 watt electric heater can have 60% more heat output than "most other heaters on the market" is if "most other heaters" are rated at 938 watts. Period. End of story. It doesn't matter how the electric heat is produced or delivered, if the wattage rating is the same then the heat output is the same.

The makers of this heater also throw around mysterious science sounding stuff like "PTC." So just what is PTC? It stands for positive temperature coefficient and that sounds pretty high tech, too, doesn't it? So what is it? It is a ceramic heating element that is designed to heat to a specific temperature and varies the wattage consumed in order to maintain that temperature. In other words, it's self regulating. That's actually a nice feature and a big improvement over the stupid light bulb in copper pipe design that is employed by the EdenPure. (EDIT: Oops, just noticed that Dr. Heater uses quartz light bulbs with a PTC element so they are nearly as dumb as EdenPure) But does it justify spending two hundred bucks (or more) on the Dr. Heater? Well that depends on what your heating goals are. Let's explore that a little more...

First of all the only way that this heater (or the EdenPure) is going to save you any money at all on your utility bill is if you change your lifestyle. If you, like most of us, live in a house with multiple rooms then you need to realize that this heater is designed to heat ONE room. And, depending on the climate in your location, that might turn out to be a pretty small room. And while this is going on the rest of the house is going to be colder, maybe a lot colder. If you can make it through the winter living in one room in your house then this might be the heater for you. Most of us, however, move about the house from room to room and we enjoy doing so in relative comfort. A portable electric space heater (regardless of brand name) is not going to heat your entire house. And if you did put an electric space heater in enough rooms to make the house comfortable you would absolutely freak out when the electric bill comes due.

Here is a little math to explain that:

Let's say that you have a 10 cent per kilowatt utility rate. Let's also say that the heater is on 50% of the time. There are 720 hours in a thirty day month so that would be 360 hours for 50% operation. 1500 watts x 360 hours is 540 kilowatt hours. Multiply that against a ten cent rate and you get 54 bucks. Think about that for a second or two: 54 bucks to heat ONE room in your house for a month. And remember, that is assuming that it's only on for half the time. What if it's on for 2/3's of the time? Or 3/4's of the time? Yikes! Not good, campers, not good at all. And holy cow, what if you live in New England where it's cold AND the electric rate is over 15 cents a KWH? Double yikes! This is why (with the exception of heat pumps) electricity based heating is your worst heating value. Always has been and always will be.

And if you do live in a place that gets really cold then this "heat one room" strategy could blow up in your face if it results in a frozen and broken water pipe in an area that you aren't heating properly. This could happen quite easily if the electric heater is in or near the same room that the whole house furnace thermostat is in.

So what's the bottom line? First of all remember that electricity is (usually but not always...see below) a terrible value in terms of heating. Then also remember that the only thing that counts with electric heaters is the wattage. The biggest electric heater that you can plug into a standard wall receptacle will be rated at 1500 watts and they all produce the same heat regardless of bogus claims made to the contrary. That is basic science. Third, ask yourself if you really want to live this way: A prisoner to the warmth in ONE room of your house. If these things are okay with you (and if you insist on spending two hundred bucks or more for the same heat that can be had for fifty bucks or less) then go for it. Just don't expect this portable electric space heater to keep your whole house comfortable (it won't) while simultaneously saving you bucket loads of money. It just isn't going to happen.

A better idea would be to invest some money in beefing up the insulation values in your home. Especially look at your floor. You would be surprised how many people live in a home (built over a ventilated crawl space) with an un-insulated floor. Take a look at sealing up cracks and crevices in exterior walls and around doors and windows where warm air leaks out and cold air can infiltrate. These fixes aren't particularly hard and after they are done they last forever. They aren't as sexy as magic electric heaters but they do work.

EDIT/UPDATE: See my comment (dated 3-7-2013 on page 15 of the comments for this review) where I discuss yet another alternative to the overpriced "magical" electric space heater, the PTHP. If you want to spend big bucks on an electrically powered heater then this is THE way to go. It's more than 100% efficient. Seriously, it really is. Best value out there for this sort of thing.

I received the DR Heater, and so far it is AWESOME. I had another brand of heater, and it's in the basement already. Quiet isn't quite the word for this heater. I have a propane gas insert for our fireplace. I thought it had a quiet fan, until I turned the DR Heater on. The fan in the gas insert drowns out the DR Heater fan. I had to put my ear down to it to tell if it was running or not. The heat output is exactly what they clame it to be. It has twice the features as the $400.00 unit. My house is well insulated, so I am not sure how it will work for everyone else. I can tell you that I highly recommend this Heater. It's should be a money saver. This is an update. Whats nice about this heater is the two types of heat output. This heater has only one bulb in it, so when the bulb goes bad, you still have heat output. I had the bulb go out, and the company sent me a replacement bulb. I received great support from DR Heater. Will buy another one.

I found that the heater generally does what it claims to do, except for the size of the room it is supposed to heat. We used it exclusively in our basement rec room and it had to struggle to get the room tempurature over 70 degrees running on high. Outside tempurature was normally in the mid thirties to the mid-forties. It ran very quietly, attractive and the remote system is great. The heater did not get hot, as advertised. It would probably work great in a smaller room such as a bedroom.

While I've only had this heater a few days, it's already become one of my most prized possessions. I've used it to heat both a fairly large area of around 500 sq ft and a single 10x12 room. I believe it may be able to replace all 5 of my 1500 watt oil filled radiator heaters. Running on "High" the electric consumption is about 1.2 Kilowatts per hour as the manufacturer says. This heater heats very evenly. For example if the heater thermometer is reading 65 degrees you can go to the far end of the heating area and get a 65 degree reading there with a digital thermometer. Another big plus it that this heater doesn't adversely affect the humidity. In the large area I started and ended with 47% humidity. In the 10x12 room I started with 47% and ended with 39%, which then recovered back to 47% after the heater shut down. As far as any beefs, it can take several hours to bring the large area up to room temperature, but once you get it there the heater will cycle on and off to keep it there.

I would like to offer a couple of pointers so that you will be able to really enjoy your infrared heater.

1. This heater is a heavy duty 110/120V device and just like your refrigerator it's needs to be on a dedicated circuit. This means that a single line needs to be run from the circuit breaker box to where this heater plugs in. This heater has a very sensitive overload switch, so if the electric line isn't a dedicated line the heater will just shut itself down after a few minutes of use when being used in "Auto Mode" or "High Manual Mode". You may be able to use it in "Low Manual Mode" if there isn't too many other electrical devices drawing current.

2. This heater should be elevated about 18 inches above the floor. As you recall from school, warm air rises. If the heater is placed at floor level then it may run for hours and never show a temperature higher than 50 degrees and never shut down. But if you elevate it you can monitor the rise in temperature visually and the heater will only run when it needs to.

We purchased five units some five years ago, in our new house. They were installed professionally. Saved a ton of money over conventional air conditioning. We love the concept, and at first the units all workd fine. Quiet, cool, etc. We also saved money by heatine or cooling only the rooms we use. (Why cool a spare bedroom 24/7?) Zone cooling at its easiest. Energy efficient.

But getting service has been a nightmare, and three of units today are not functional Warranty? Don't make me laugh. A new compressor will cost just about what a new unit will cost, and shipping by pallet is so expensive (that's the only way, they say) that it's cheaper to toss the entire unit and buy a new one.

We'll buy new ones, alright, but not from this company.

We just had this unit installed last wednesday. Yesterday we noticed the unit was not heating. We called the installer and he determined that the condensor line was leaking and that we needed a new outdoor unit. We have to pay shipping on the unit for Heat and Cool on an item that is brand spanking new, plus will have to pay to have the new unit installed. This is so wrong. It is obvious that customer satisfaction is not a priority with this company. I would not recommend anyone buying any product from them if you can help it.

Update, Heat and cool paid for shipping both ways and 3 weeks ago replaced at no charge the controller board which was fried by lightning. Increasing rating to 4 stars.

Normally before investing in an appliance or other major purchase, my husband and I read product reviews and comparison shop. This time we let our builder make the decision and didn't question when he put in a Klimaire. It was installed in May and has never, EVER cooled properly. After two service calls, and now that we are in a triple-digit heat wave, it has been determined that the condenser has a leak, and we need a warranty repair. After reading other reviewers' experience with the company and the Klimaire "warranty," I can see where this is heading. I really don't know what to do about it other than warn others not to make the same mistake.

the install was pretty staight forward. It took me about 2 weeks of an hour here and there after work to get everything done. I LOVE the unit, it is quiet and cool. People always ask about it and its easy on the electricity bill. Dont make the mistake I made and move the condenser lines after the freon is in circulation. The nuts that hold the lines together can loosen, and the the freon will escape into the ether. Then, you will have to call your AC person to come take your money.

I have a 9k btu klimaire mini-split working fine. Two pieces of advice: When assembling use Nylog Blue assembly sealant at all metal to metal connections..works great. 2-If using cheap vacuum pump heat up the evaporator coils with a hair blow dryer;makes up for the poor pump capacity.

This is a great oil warmer. It looks nice and doesn't use a bulb as the heating mechanism, which means I don't have to worry about replacing one. It also heats up fairly quickly.

Just in case you were wondering about the durability, it is ceramic and will crack if you drop it or it falls off the desk/table/counter (as mine did). However, it still works fine, so this isn't an issue for me.

The one thing I don't like about this warmer is that the power cord is annoyingly short. It is only about 2.5 feet long (maybe less). I wanted to put the warmer on my desk and connect it to the surge protector hidden in the cabinet of my desk, but the cord doesn't even make it halfway there (barely makes it straight to the floor from the edge of the desk). Just make sure that there is an outlet very close to where you want to use this or make sure you have an extension cord available.

I use just a little bit (a couple of drops) of oils or left over perfumes I have around and the room is filled with fragrance within minutes and lasts about 4-5 hours. It's VERY cheap to upkeep and to refill. Will order a second one just in case!

I use this under my desk at work and it's exactly what I wanted. Variable speed, not too loud, quick to heat. The temperature gauge feature is nice too, as is the auto shutoff in case it tips over.

Positive:

+ The heater will probably work well for at least a month.

+ It oscillates well.

+ The auto-off tip alert does work, but is very sensitive. If it is bumped, the lights in the room will flicker due to the power fluctuation until it situates. This is as opposed to my previous heater (a Holmes) that just shut it self off until I turned it on again.

Negative:

As another reviewer mentioned, this heater has a "child proof cap" style control knob. After approx. two months of gentle handling (because it was obvious that the heater was made with terribly cheap parts) I could no longer turn the heater off because the threads on the cap had worn off. In the end I had to unplug it to turn it off and stop using it.

After two weeks the fan blade started to make squealing sounds at random times. By the time the control knob broke, it had become quite loud. I never shook, dropped, hit or ever moved the heater. It was only set to oscillate for about one minute when it first arrived. It was another sign that this heater is cheaply made.

We have one tiny bathroom without a heater. My old Holmes, which worked so well, finally died. I bought this Honeywell to replace the Holmes, and discarded the packaging or it would have been returned.

First, the Settings knob is the push-and-turn type, and when you press on it and turn it, it just keeps going around and around, Second, even if you turn the heat setting (the second knob) all the way up, the heater turns off after about three second (I actually timed it). Then, if you're lucky, five or ten minutes later, you'll get another brief blast of heat. Third, for the fan function to work, the room has to be as warm as the heater setting, which doesn't make any sense at all. Fourth, the whole unit oscillates, sending blasts of heat around in an arc.

I've been buying space heaters for that small bathroom for the twenty years I've been in this house, and the six dollar Rite-Aid heater I bought in a pinch two years ago worked better than this thing.

Choose a different heater!

I live in a dorm where the heating is controlled and the university has yet to turn on the heat, leaving me freezing until they do. I tend to be super cold all the time, so wanted to invest in a decent heater. I was therefore siding with the Lasko 23 inch tower, (larger than average dorm room). It is harder to lug the tower home though, and definitely slightly pricier (i was buying from bed, bath and beyond). So I took the chance with this cheaper and smaller heater.

It is GREAT. As soon as you plug it in, it starts heating up the space. It rotates and evenly spreads heat. It is great for keeping the space you are sitting in, and the general area/radius around you very warm.

It is not big enough to keep the ENTIRE room warm, but since it is SO good at keeping me warm on my bed/the area where I'm sitting/studying, I cannot feel the cold draft inside the room whatsoever.

This is GREAT for a dorm room, especially if your dorm is smaller than my room, it'll do a much better job of heating the room. Since I just bought this, I will update my review if anything significant changes. Right now, I am very happy with my purchase. It is also REALLY small, really light, and easy to store. It has a safety feature of automatically closing if you lift it to move it around, and turns itself right back on once you set it back in place. It has 3 different options + dial with min to max temp. 3 options: fan (regular/cold), low heat, and high heat. There is a fan noise but it is very minimal in my opinion and not significant enough to distract me from my studies!

The only drawback for me is the fact that the safety instructions advise against putting placing it in the bathroom. The lasko 23 inch tower was alright in the bathroom.. so I will not be using this in the winter to keep myself cold before/after showers. too bad.

I work in a place that gets cold in the winter and never really warms up comfortably even when the heat is on, so people bring in their heaters. There are at least 5 different brand heaters at work, including my comfort zone heater. When I tried this one, it really puts out the heat, much more than the others, so I looked at the brand. I've been looking for it in stores ever since. I don't know who brought it in since there was no name, but I want one of these.

The sensor on the bottom that is supposed to shut it off when it tips is too short. It's almost impossible to get it running because you can't keep that trip sensor engaged. I ended up taping it so now it really doesn't have tip over control.

How to Choose Baseboard Heaters

Baseboard heaters have long been a great source of heat in residential and commercial applications. They operate on a very simple, time-tested process. Hot water goes through plumbing pipes because a re-circulating pump keeps it moving. Hot water leaves and cooler water returns to be re-heated and sent on its way again.

Early Applications

Long before air conditioning was a regular part of construction, radiator heat was the typical way of heating large commercial office spaces, schools, and multi-level apartment buildings. In earlier days, baseboard heaters were not the slim, low profile design as they are today. They were called radiator heaters because of the large coil of pipe housed within a metal encasing resembling an appliance or piece of furniture.

All baseboard heaters worked on the premise of a central furnace to heat the water to be distributed to various rooms. In the late part of the nineteenth and early part of the twentieth centuries, coal was the typical fuel for the furnaces.

Coal was a cheap although very messy source of fuel, which burned for long periods. It was also very labor intensive because someone had to be in charge of stoking the fire in the early hours so people would be warm when they got out of bed.

Why Hot Water Baseboard Heaters are Desirable

Although baseboard heaters were used on single level structures, they excelled in multi-story buildings because of the tendency of hot water to rise. This natural phenomenon kept the water rising, cooling, and returning to be heated again. Because the rising of hot air and water was common knowledge, furnaces and water heaters were always placed in basements to use the scientific advantage.

With the growing popularity of heating oil as a fuel, baseboard heaters no longer presented such hard work in the cold wee hours of the morning. The first boilers with heating oil used timers that automatically started the furnace at a preset time. This migrated to the use of thermostats to control the operation on most systems.

One of the best reasons for the use of hot water baseboard heaters is the extreme comfort that comes from moist heat. Electric and gas will heat an area, but neither has the natural feel of hot water heat.

Drawbacks of Hot Water Baseboard Heaters

On single story buildings especially, long runs of the water line result in hot and cold spots. The areas that get heated water first are warmer than those further down the line. Most systems don't have a single circulation loop for this reason, but have zoned areas. Additionally, rooms on exterior walls get a higher concentration of heat. Usually baseboard heaters are on outside walls and located under windows.

When the outside air heats up enough that the furnace is not needed as much, hot water baseboard heaters are still hot and temperatures may rise to uncomfortable levels before the water cools down after the furnace stops heating. Maintaining the proper heat levels is the most problematic part of hot water heating.

Plumbing pipes do wear out and develop leaks. There are maintenance issues with hot water heating, and many of the plumbing lines remain exposed, which is unsightly.

Electric Baseboard Heaters

The use of electric baseboard heaters is ideal in structures that aren't large enough to afford a central system or are only used occasionally. An addition that would tax the heating unit of a building might be a typical place for baseboard heaters. Electric heaters are not inexpensive to operate because they do not work on heat transfer, but the strip heating that works instantly.

The same locations are used for electric heaters as the hot water type. That is under windows to compensate for where most cold air penetrates into the room and on exterior walls. The newer heaters are designed compactly and come in several colors to compliment different room decors.

Comfort or Practicality

A small home with a basement is an ideal place to use a hot water heating system, but most homeowners will choose the heat pump so that the one system handles both heating and cooling. Limited applications are better served by electric heaters, but the one thing that remains true, hot water is the most comfortable way to heat a home.
