I have owned several different electric kettles, but this one is by far the best. The Zojirushi is easy to use and set up. The timer is the best feature of all, I set the timer in the evening and the water is at the perfect temperature when I wake in the morning. The whole family uses it, for tea, hot cocoa, coffee (french press), instant oatmeal, roman noodles and more! This is the best purchase I have made in a long time, and the Zojirushi is worth every cent.

All in all, this electric pot is wonderful. Heats as stated in the manual (about 35 minutes for entire pot). Easy to use (plug and go). Keeps the water hot for a long time and the digital readout lets you know the current temp of the water.

Couple of drawbacks that maybe they'll fix in the next model: 1) Runs on 2 "AA" batteries for dispensing when not plugged in. Batteries only last about 7 hours. 2) When the batteries run out, you can't just replace the batteries and continue using the pot. It doesn't recognize the new batteries. For the new batteries to be recognized, you must plug the unit back into a wall outlet. That really defeats the purpose of going outlet free.

Seems a bit expensive for the 2 problems noted but otherwise I'm almost universally happy with all Zojirushi products I've ever purchased.

My only complaint is: It is only stainless steel for the outside look, not for the container that actually holds the water. As a result, the water dispensed from it always tasted/smelled a little weird, not like from a real stainless steel kettle.

I own this particular model along with a couple CD-LCC models and other boilers. Hand down, Zojirushi is the best for having large amount of hot water ready at home or small coffee shops.

Please note that CV-DYC40 was mainly designed for holding water at 208F and 195F. The unit is designed to be plugged in 24/7 and refilled as needed. Note that a whole gallon of water is contained in an extremely well insulated container while the boiler heats to 212F every single time one adds water! It takes about 2hrs for the insulated units to cool to 175F, which is painfully slow. If you insist on holding water at 175F, I suggest getting a non-insulated CD-LCC model. A workaround for CV-DYC40 is to boil about 2/3 of the water and top off with cold water.

The battery function is very nice as you can take the boiler anywhere in the house, coffee shop, outdoors for parties, catering etc. If you own a small coffee shop and are looking for a boiler/kettle for americanos and hot chocolate consider that this boiler is very slow (30-40min to boil a 4 liters) and you may end up using this boiler as more of a 'fancy' carafe, still using a regular kettle to boil water.

Lastly, for those of you who are tea aficionados, part of the tea flavor comes from oxidation. As the water sits in the boiler at, say, 195F or 208F oxygen and other gases escape which may lead to some teas tasting slightly different. But, hey! If you can't tell a difference then who cares?

Afraid one day I'd forget a pot on the stove, I spent a month researching electric water boilers. I've used electric kettles in the past and I love their fast operation: Push a button and come back later for a kettle of boiling water.

Features I initially wanted:

1. Boils water.

Throwing my hands up in indecisive frustration, I ordered the Aroma AWK-115S Electric Kettle. On the second day, it failed to shut-off, happily boiling away an entire 1.5 L of water and burning my house down if I hadn't intervened. The metal housing had no insulation, so I'd have had to re-heat it frequently. Additionally, it had a low capacity and required manually heating it several minutes before I wanted the water (I calculated that 2 minutes each morning and night waiting around for water to boil is over 24 hrs per year!)

Features I eventually wanted:

1. Boils water.

2. No reported errors with automatic shut-off.

3. Made somewhere other than China.

4. Doesn't rust/corrode.

5. Well insulated.

6. Portable.

7. At least 3L capacity.

8. Always hot.

9. Stainless steel exterior to match my other appliances.

10. Metal or glass interior.

Then I discovered the Zojirushi DYC-40 VE.

It checks off 8.5 of my 10 requirements in various amounts. Where it isn't a home-run:

There is a 1-2 second delay before getting relatively slow-running water. *Every* time you dispense water, you have to push an "UNLOCK" button before holding down the "DISPENSE" button! Every time. You get to push 2 buttons sequentially! Seriously? I scoured the manual and there is no way to disable this child safety feature. It's an absolutely terrible user experience considering the water already comes out at a very slow rate and requires *holding down* the "DISPENSE" button! How would you even cause an accident considering you have to hold the button down anyway? Bad design.

The interior is coated with a thin layer of polytetrafluoroethylene (Teflon) to prevent corrosion. According to studies, this non-stick coating begins to emit toxic, carcinogenic gasses when heated over 400 degrees. Since water boils at 212 degrees, you'd assume we would be safe. But what if the heating element heats the walls above 400 degrees in order to boil the water? I tested this with an infrared thermometer and determined that the non-stick coating is roughly the same temperature as the water because the heating element is located separately, below the insulated water reservoir!

The "stainless steel" exterior is really just a plastic veneer with a stainless steel appearance. Mine even had a deep scratch on it when it arrived.

Porting the pot around wirelessly requires 2 AA batteries. For some reason, my high-quality rechargeable Eneloop batteries fully charged are not recognized as having any charge.

Finally, it really does keep water hot all day long at a reasonable cost (~$70/year -the unit paying for itself in about 5 years when compared with an uninsulated kettle): only 19 watts (the box says 17 watts, but my house is unheated so this is fairly accurate). Unfortunately, this is at 195 degrees, which is too cool for some of my uses. You may keep water on-demand at 205 degrees, but even the vacuum insulation is insufficient to keep that electricity usage below 39 watts.

Overall, this is a modern convenience, and I'm really happy to have it in my kitchen. It ultimately saves me about 90% of the time I spent heating (and re-heating) water with a stove or typical electric kettle (a net return of about 22 hours per year)!

So maybe in a couple years, I'll break even with the time I spent researching electric kettles.

Excellent product. This is our second Pelonis HC-0113 Tower Oscillating Ceramic Heater. It is quiet. It can oscillate or function stationary. It is easy to assemble. And it takes the chill out of the house so the furnace does not have to be turned on in the early fall, saving money. Plus, it is a nice looking piece of furniture.

I thought this was going to work for the area directly above out hot tub, boy was I wrong. I mounted this 8 foot above the front side of the hot tub and angled it so it would heat the area above everyone's head. While mounting it I was extremely happy from looking at the construction, solid metal, great mounting brackets, along with a long cord.

First off from reading other reviews I kept reading 10 x 10 area, in my test we were hoping for 9 x 7 foot section. I was hoping this would take the edge off from the winds that blow thru in the winter months. The plus would be to provide us with a area directly under the heat light to dry off in the warmth.

That night the temperature dropped to 55 degrees and very little wind. So we were ready to try it out. And i felt this would be a EASY test for this to pass.

After plugging the unit in, I wondered around the hot tub to feel the heat, it was almost nothing more then 6 foot directly in-front of the light. I didn't let that ruin the night so we got in the hot tub, I also started realizing my private area in my own back yard was really under the spot light now. This 1500 watt light produces a lot of visible light.

In comparison, I grabbed a yellow bug light and put it in a shop light. The 100 watt bug light was less to at the most about the same brightness of this heat light. The heat produced was good enough to heat the first 3 feet as if I was a hamburger at a fast food restaurant and nearly non existent 6 foot out. But in comparison, you would be better off buying two satco s4998 heat lights that produce about the same heat and far less visible light for over a $250 savings. Along with saving 1000 watts of electricity.

Final test was to try this out in my garage I mounted this on the ceiling about 9 foot above my shop area, I left this on for 10 mins and came back to find it did an fair-OK job warming a closed area, insulated area. After the 10 min test I was satisfied to say this unit works ok indoors, but is far from the manufactures statements comparing this is a outdoor commercial unit.

In conclusion this unit could work if your goal is to heat and light a small enclosed area. If your goal is to heat the outdoors this is not for you unless you are only looking for a small area outside so one person can smoke in the dead of winter without freezing to death

Recommended product instead, each light can easly take the chill off a 4x4 area, or inside 8x12 x 2 lights

Very disappointing.... 3 hours to assemble... and even with a plumber friend had a hard time getting the LP gas connections safely connected. Overall this unit seems a bit cheap and flimsy -wouldn't buy this again if I had the chance to do it over. Keep looking there's got to be a better unit on the market!

update: March 2008: It's now been a year since we bought this and every time we turn it on I feel a little guilty about this review. Yes, assembly was a pain, but once we got it together, it's worked flawlessly since and puts out great heat. Amazon won't let me upgrade this to 3 or 4 stars, but I did want to add that this has been a good unit.

Update: April 2013... NOW I FEEL REALLY GUILTY!!! This little unit has put up with a lot of abuse (besides my original review)... it's always outside in the rain and the wind... it's gotten banged up by contractors...dropped... you name it... and it just keeps going. I fired it up tonight for the first time in a year... and it instantly lit, after about 3 minutes of bleeding the pilot... amazing!!!

I definitely take back my prior review... 5 stars....it's lasted 5 years, taken a lot of abuse, and still works like a champ.

These outdoor heaters are amazing. I ordered three of these from Amazon to heat a large patio with outdoor seating area and dining area and they do a fantastic job. I read the reviews here and noted the assembly warnings but these units were not difficult to put together and I didn't encounter any of the frustrations of the earlier reviewers and based on what they were saying in their reviews it looks like the manufacturer read the reviews and changed the assembly requirements.

The first unit took about two hours to unpack and assemble but I was taking my time and making sure I did everything right the first time. The second unit took about an hour and the third about 45 minutes. I have a decent tool set but am only average on the assembly skills and so I expect others will be able to put these together faster.

The units put out a really good amount of heat and once they have been on for 5 to 10 minutes we have to turn them down because they are just too hot which is an outstanding result. My in laws were visiting and after experiencing an outdoor dinner and breakfast they were hooked and planning on ordering one of the these for themselves.

We had dinner at a local restaurant later in the week we got these and we ate outdoors under their heatlamps and ... you guessed it they had the same exact heat lamps as these. Since then I have seen these same units in a number of restaurants around town that have outdoor dining. You know if the local restaurants are using them then they must be sturdy and longlasting.

I highly recommend these units to anyone that wants to heat their patios and are looking for a high quality unit that puts out a good amount of heat.

After reading mixed reviews, I took a leap of faith on this patio heater. Unfortunately, that leap fell a bit short. Upon receiving the heater, I noticed that the box was double-taped. This usually indicates either a) the manufacturer is taking an extra step to ensure secure packaging; or b) the product was opened, re-taped, and returned. There were no other shipping labels or evidence of label removal, so I assumed it was double-taped from the factory.

I opened the box and removed all of the pieces; when I got to the bottom I realized that all of the assembly hardware was strewn about, but the package the hardware was supposed to be in was there (albeit empty) along with the instructions. It appeared as though everything was present.

Hoping for the best, I began assembly and soon realized what I was up against. The instructions are horrible and could easily be re-written, as several of the individual steps are actually multiple procedures that must be done sequentially (you'll figure it out as you go, make sure your ratchet set is reversible). These steps are demonstrated by archaic line drawings that have no orienting details whatsoever, and I estimate a good half hour of my two-hour assembly was wasted due to this oversight. In hindsight, one could probably complete the entire assembly of this product in 30-45 minutes with accurate instructions. After a lot of head-scratching, I finally reached the last few steps, which involve assembling the dome at the top. This was when the Chinese engineering really came to light. Nothing lined up, nothing fit, and I almost sent this flimsy piece of trash Frisbee-like into the recycling bin. Some of the hardware for the dome assembly is supposed to be pre-attached, and at this point I realized that a few of the screws required for assembly were missing. After a trip to the hardware store, a bit of drilling, a bit of bending, a lot of twisting, and the creation of a few new curse words, I was finally able to complete this fine modern marvel.

I am still unsure if this was a returned item or not, but unless you have a lot of patience, are moderately handy, and enjoy a challenge created by a complete dearth of quality control and engineering, I suggest looking at another heater. On a positive note, it does work reasonably well when it lights (often requires the use of a lighter to get the pilot going). We'll see how long it lasts, but I would happily spend double the price for a quality unit with respectable fit and finish.

Overall good product. The assembly is fairly easy but will take a couple of hours. The one difficult part is connecting the gas line nozzle tip to the heating element portion (the "engine"). It does not want to click easily. You will need a strong person and a helper. Use a little 3-in-1 oil to make the job easier, twist gently, and don't give up. After that it works fine.

I have had other patio heaters at this price point and this is one of the better ones.

This fan pushes a *lot* of air in a very narrow stream, and is fairly quiet about it.

* The yellow part pivots at least 180 degrees, as I have rotated mine back so that the air exit is right above the floor (as I'm using it as a cold air return booster fan for our belabored central AC system, which has far more output vent area than cold air return area).

* The cord is very thick, about 6 feet long, with a grounded 3-prong plug; that's good, especially since the fan has two grounded outlets right on it, which have a circuit breaker; they are labeled max 10 amps each.

* The fan has three speeds, and is truly three speeds: I refuse to buy fans that count "off" as one of the speeds.

* The box says the fan has 100 blades, and it's a squirrel cage fan (sucks air in through the sides, forces it out through the front, just like a blow dryer.

* The case is made of heavy plastic and feels solid.

* The fan sounds like white noise, there is no vibration or phasing.

Well, this makes five of these fans that we have purchased and they are great. My husband and I are very hot natured and could never find a fan that really did the job, until we discovered these. They come in two sizes and this is the small one. We have the large one in the garage with our excercise equipment and the others in the house in various rooms. Instead of blowing around hot air it almost feels like it is blowing cooled air. We think they are great. They also do a great job of drying out damp carpet, towels etc.

This has proven to be quite a versatle fan. I have used it to quickly dry my wet-mopped floors on high humidity days and to dry rugs after pet accident cleanup. It has been really good as a room fan although a bit noisy since that is probably not its main purpose. BUT, short of standing in front of an air conditioner's cool air vent, nothing feels better than to stand in front of this fan!!

The only downside is that it uses somewat more power than my non-squirel cage 15" fan (a trade-off one needs to consider for the extra airflow it provides). On low, medium, and high it uses 76w, 85w, and 103w, respectively. Whereas my 15" fan uses 45w, 53w, and 65w. (Measurements taken using my Kill A Watt EZ.)

My son has 2 desktop computers in his room and it is also the room farthest from the main AC and so it got much hotter in his room than the rest of the house. I did not need something just to move the air around, I needed to actually cool off the room and the solution..... place this fan on 1 of the 2 lowest settings (highest settings are a bit much for indoors) right over the floor vent and it pulls more air from the AC central unit vents without any noticeable effect on the other rooms. It lowered the temperature in his room by at least 5-8 degrees or more (it was over 10 degrees hotter originally). It is a much cheaper solution than buying a AC window unit for his room. We can always use it to dry carpets when we shampoo our carpets also which it does very well (you can use those higher settings). I can safely say it is the best fan we have ever bought and the most versatile by far. Highly recommended.

It fits Kitchenaid 6QT model, and you don't have to change any parts. You need two bowls if you are making cakes. I bought the used one from Amazon and it was less than 30 dollars. Best deal.

For anyone wants to buy...this bowl is wide mouth bowl which is for Costco 5.5qt KV25 model. It also fits 6qt model, which is KP26 model. It is not as deep as 6qt bowl. So, it makes easy to whip or do anything small amount. I actually replaced my 6qt bowl by this one. 6qt bowl was too big and heavy to me.

Not much to say, it is a bowl, when you need one nothing else will do. When ordering however be sure to identify whether you need a wide bowl or a narrow bowl. Size is one thing, like 5 qt but then you have to know wide or narrow as well. If you get the wrong size it will not fit on your mixer.

I have a 5.5 model KitchenAid mixer from Costco and when I went to buy a second bowl (because I find 2 are necessary if you are making frosting, a double batch of something, a layered cake, etc), I found that they don't make replacements for the 5.5 model! I e-mailed KitchenAid and they told me the 5 qt option (KN25WPBH) and a 6 qt option (KN2B6PEH) would both fit. I ended up going with the 5 qt one (I think it was on sale) and it works perfectly! I spent quite a bit of time researching A/C before purchasing. We live in Oregon and it doesn't get too hot but there's a month or two in the summer where the heat and humidity get oppressive in the house. I wanted an inexpensive, small, window A/C to increase the comfort. I wanted something small enough that I can store it the other 10 months.

So, after much research I ordered this model. I was going to get the 6K BTU model with the electronic controls but I figured I would get something super cheap and if it didn't work I could use it as a single room cooler. Shipped free which makes this a pretty good deal. Arrived in about a week.

Installation was easy, following the instructions in the manual. I did have to install and remove the A/C about 3 times to get all the sealing right. In the box there's a lot of different thicknesses of foam and foam tape. There is no specific instructions about what to do with this, except the stuff for the top gap of the upper sash. So, I experimented with various combos to get a good seal. We have recent vinyl windows with screens but no storms so the unit basically dropped right in. However, there are some gaps around the bottom in this configuration. I stuffed these with the thickest foam that came with the unit. This did the trick but didn't look too great. Luckly I ordered extra foam tape as another reviewer recommended, and I used small pieces of that to caulk around it inside and outside, leaving the big foam inside. It actually looks pretty neat and professional. $4 well spent ;)

Anyway, the unit is installed in our main living room. We are in a 1940's box bungalow so this room is about half of the width and length of the house. The bedrooms and kitchen connect to it. With it on HI cool/Max(7) the entire house has been very cold and huge amounts of water have been pulled out. We will see how it performs in the upcoming week of 95+ temps. We keep a few $10 box fans around to circulate air so I can move the cold air around.

One thing is that I have heard mentioned on a few other models is that the fan catches water in the pan and spits it around. This is a feature and not a bug ;). The unit is designed to pitch backward slightly when properly mounted. Moisture removed from the room collects at the bottom. The fan blade is coated in rubber and it's designed to suck water up and spray it on the evaporator coils. This facilitates some precooling of the outside air. It drastically increases efficiency. I would not drill drain holes, as other people have mentioned.

Summary:

$100, and my house is cold AND quiet. You can't say much more. If it's not enough for the hottest day I might get one more and move them to the bedrooms. It's very quiet on low but I like white noise.. I hope it lasts, even if it doesn't I'd gladly pay another $100 in 2 years.

I got it hoping it would keep my apartment cool-ER. I expected it to keep it comfortable, not cold. I also had a bit of a problem with size. The only window that opens in my house is a vertical sliding window, which Air Conditioners I can afford, aren't made for.

Once I received it, I started to assemble and install. Originally I was going to leave the extensions off, since my window was only 18 inches wide, but after I got it and thought about it more, I realized they could still help keep it supported. So I put them on. They are about an inch inside the window, to help it from falling out. Also, I originally hoped to buy some wood and put that above it, but once I saw how sturdy it was with just the extensions, I put cardboard above it and plastic taped around the edges with duct tape. Very red neck, I know. It's sealed with the help of some other bits that came with it to help seal it.

I installed it a little over 12 hours ago and my home is cold. I live in a house above a garage. Just a large living room, average bathroom and small bedroom. It's 621 SQ Feet.(assuming I did the math correctly. 23 x 27 feet.) This is total, but there are 3 separate rooms here. (Also, I have a low ceiling, only 6.5 Feet.) I placed it in my only opening window in the living room and it keeps the bathroom cold which is closest, and my bedroom pretty cold too, which is farthest. A lot larger than advertised for. I didn't care, I needed a little cooler than I had. Before, it was hotter inside than it was outside. I have it on high, but will consider turning it down, which I never thought I would do. I like the cold. It's THAT cold.

For $110, I got an amazing air conditioner that perform WAY better than expected/advertised and it got here exceptionally fast too. It arrived 4 days after I ordered it with standard shipping and handling. I am a very happy costumer.

One year later to the date. No this was not planned. This little unit lasted through another summer, and this one was not so mild. I lost count of the days over 100 degrees. I did not buy any more for my house, as I moved into a new home with central air. This unit does however continue to cool my office as it was purchased for.

It was stored all winter in the utility closet off my office (i.e. indoors, warm, and dry). It was washed down with a power washer before being re-installed in the window this year.

Pros -

Excellent Size for Small Windows (I am still amazed I found a unit that fit)

Fairly Quite to run (I don't notice it running anymore, and no customers have complained)

It can still freeze me and my customers out when set on max temp (7)

..(I timed it again and it still takes about 8 hours to cool down a 11x14 hot room)

Cons -

The Directional Airflow vents are very poor (they are basically useless)

Still not much difference between the High and Low settings

..(I fixed the rain issue above by using plexiglass this year)

Rust has started to form on the outside grill and corners where the condensation drops

For those of you wondering, the reduced star is because of the directional airflow issues. Another review mentioned the styrofoam can be seen, and was probably used to fill the gaps. This is true but after two years it still seems to be in good shape. It also appears to be fairly thick. Some other items I tested this year...

Room size 11x14 (left on this setting for 24 hours before temperature was measured)

Yesterday it was put back in storage until next year. I considered getting a sound level meter or loudness level meter to measure the actual noise my unit puts out, but I have not got around to that yet. Maybe next year.

Frigidaire's warranty is a lie. They won't service a defective unit.

The manual says the product has a one year parts and labor Warranty and a five year compressor warranty. Mine went bad after 10 days. It took 5 phone calls and three hours on the phone with Frigidaire to be told that they do not service Air Conditioner units of 5000 BTU or less. Their ONLY solution is to return the item to Amazon or to where ever it was purchased. I relied upon their Frigidaire's written warranty and disposed of the box, thinking that if anything went wrong they'd come out and fix it. Fortunately Amazon will send a replacement unit and I'll use that box to return the defective one. However that solution won't work if the unit goes bad after six months. Then you'll be stuck with a company that won't honor its' written warranty.

Don't Buy This Frigidaire Air Conditioner.

I live in a basement apartment and struggled to find an AC for my tiny windows the opening is only 16.5 inches wide and 18 inches tall. No window air conditioner would fit that space. I had an 8,000 BTU portable A/C but that thing was just very inefficient drawing in hot air from the outside as most portable units do because they constantly exhaust hot air and new air has to come from somewhere. Long story short, I stumbled upon this little unit and found out it was only 16 inches wide (sans the side panels). It fit my tiny window perfectly. Most importantly, it also does not protrude very far to the outside, and important consideration when people walk past your window.

Mounting this unit was easy. It is so light that you don't have to struggle with it like most air conditioners. You should not get a hernia lugging this unit. It also puts very little strain on the window frame and does not need any additional brackets. To my surprise, the unit also came with tons of mounting hardware including insulation often not included with other units. There was even a piece of foam to put in between the two window panes to insulate the gap in between two open windows. Nice.

I noticed a lot of people out here mount the unit in an angled position. You do not have to go out of your way to do that. If you mount it right, it angles slightly to the outside by itself. The reason for this is so that the water that accumulates in the unit flows outside and not inside. You don't have to tilt the unit outward as much as many of the pictures on here show.

What the unit lacks in size it does not lack in output. At 5,000 BTU, I was not expecting much, but this unit outperformed the 8,000 BTU portable unit easily, drawing 1/3 less electricity. It cools the entire 400sqft apartment with the help of a fan. (a well-insulated apartment, don't expect it to cool 450sqft in a poorly insulated or sun-exposed building) It is one of the quieter units out there, producing a constant hum rather than sounding like a freight train like some units. The most noise comes from the fan. The compressor is barely noticeable. It is a no frills unit with manual controls but they work pretty well. It maintains the room temperature better than many electronic units. Set to level 6, it cools the room to a comfortable 73 degrees, level 7 cools to about 69 degrees. it cycles on and off nicely and quietly. Finally, the build quality seems rather good nothing rattles or vibrates.

Overall, this is probably the best little AC out there you can get. If space is a problem and you were considering a wasteful portable unit, give this little guy a try.

It works fine as a heater, with nice slim design and buttons.

But it's a bit louder than I thought it'd be!!

I even phoned them to check if I this is normal and they admitted that they make some sound, unlike their humidifier.

I'm not sure if I'll be able to sleep with it on.

I might return it after few days, depends on how well it warms up the room.....

Amazon carries another heater by the same maker as this one, it is the "Crane EE-6490 Space Heater 600/1200 Watt". The Product Features and Details seem to be switched on these two. At least this is my assumption; check them both out and you will probably agree.

For instance, the larger one is probably the one that is 20" tall, and the smaller one 8.6" tall. Another important difference: the smaller one probably does not come with a remote, but the larger one probably does.

This model was everything that it was advertised to be. However when buying any newer products in todays market one must keep in mind you CAN NOT make a direct compaireson to an older model that you are replaceing! In this case the newer model was more noticeable when operating(noise level) than the model of 25yrs that it replaced. I was extreamly pleased with this purchase and the ease of dealing with amazon. I installed this Broan heater for a failed (30+ years) Newtone heater. The Broan fit into the same wall space with only a small bit ot hole enlargement.

The 1000 watt heater is a good choice for the space. The thermostat is better than the one in the Newtone.

The fan (a squirrel-cage blower) in the Broan is NOISY. Although the blower fan is quieter, the motor mount is such that there is a lot of AC HUM vibration. So, the rating of 3 stars It's OK but NOISY!

Folks, I shopped online for many heated mattress pads. I read everything, and finally decided I would narrow the choice to the new "low voltage" models, that convert the AC current that comes from the wall into a low voltage DC (or some such thing) to power the thin little wires in the pad. Some people claim the higher voltage might have dangerous fields or such some dispute that, but anyway, it seems like newer technology is better so I went that way.

The choices narrowed down to a model from Frontgate that is $100 more, but has the advantage of a separate heating zone for the feet. So if you're a cold-footed person, you can crank up the foot portion of the mattress pad. Also, that Frontgate model had, in addition to the wired control, an identical wireless control. I guess that's if you don't like wires hanging off your bedstand, or if you want to be able to fire up that puppy when you're standing over by your closet. So I actually ordered both to compare.

This velour pad is really nice. You might wonder if it's too fluffy or smells synthetic or whatever, but really I would say it feels like if you laid down a very soft plush towel on your mattress, then put your fitted sheet on top. Very comfortable. Doesn't feel fluffy through your fitted sheet, just feels soft and nice. The dial has quite a range so you can set it just how you want.

By contrast, the expensive Frontgate model only had three settings, hi, medium, and lo, and I don't think that's enough range.

As for whether you want the velour or just a plain cotton/mix pad, that's up to you. And as to whether you want a heated mattress pad vs. an electric blanket, you can read all about the pros/cons from other reviewers. I am so thrilled to have the mattress heated, after using electric blankets for 10 years, because it makes so much more sense. I love it! One of my favorite additions to the house ever. This is the one I kept I sent the Frontgate back.

UPDATE: I revised this to include some thoughts from the comments.

It's really hard to describe just how great this heated mattress pad is. You would think the "microplush" part wouldn't matter. But somehow, even through my 800 thread count sheets, I can feel the difference when I put this on my bed. Just having the pad on the bed is great even when it's not turned on.

The heating coils are much finer (thinner) than typical heated pads so there aren't lumps and the heat is more uniform. The heat range seems quite nice. Of course, I live in Colorado and my wife likes to keep the window open. So we use a heavy down comforter with the heater.

The pad itself wraps your mattress well. This will fit even the thickest Queen size mattress without danger of the pad sliding around at night.

Now for the caveats. Yeah, I suggested there was only one but there are two important concerns:

1. The power inverter that converts the 110 volts AC coming out of your wall (which normal pads use directly) into lower voltage DC tends to make a high pitched whistle. I guess I didn't go to enough Rock concerts when I was younger because I am still sensitive to high frequency sounds. There are many nights where the whistle wakes me up. You have to unplug the unit to get it to stop. I usually through a pillow over the unit and that sometimes helps. It is high frequency, which means it's highly directional and easily blocked.

2. You cannot get replacement controllers. The manufacturer, PerfectFit / SoftHeat / Chattam & Wells, does not sell replacement controllers. After about two and a half years, my original controller died leaving me freezing while my wife was toasty. They did honor the five year warranty and sent an entire new pad with two controllers!

Maybe #2 isn't really a caveat. They did a great job honoring the warranty and now I have a complete set of spare parts. But I'm still going to knock a star for #1. If you are sensitive to high frequency sounds, this may not be the pad for you. Otherwise, this heating pad really is great!

I am very pleased with this heated mattress pad. It fits my queen mattress nicely. THe wire connections are located at the head of the pad on the vertical (edge) section. They are not at the bottom of the pad so you don't have wires running up towards the head of the bed from underneath. THe cover is soft and fuzzy so the sheet (I happen to be using flannel sheets right now) don't slip around on the pad. It heats up quickly. I wish for the money, that the controls had a system for preheat time and then automatically switches to your desired reduced heat setting. Otherwise, I am happy with my purchase. THe washing instructions also look like it's a washer friendly pad no extra special handling for washing Yea! I am glad I bought a heated pad and not an electric blanket no matter where my feet are, they lie in a warm spot.

I have never owned a heated mattress pad before, so I don't really have much first-hand experience for comparison. However, as always I try and do my research, and I did so with this purchase. After having the pad for a couple of days, here's my impressions.

The most common issue I saw complained about with other brands/models was that the wires were noticeable under the sheets when the bed is made up. This pad is quite thick, more so than most normal mattress pads, and I cannot feel any wires through it at all, at least on the normal surfaces.

Another issue I saw mentioned with other brands was that the plugs for the control and power wires were on top of the pad towards the feet area, meaning you will hit them with your feet at night while moving around and where they may be the furthest away from a power outlet. This model has the plug(s) at the head of the bed on the vertical portion of the mattress (the side against the headboard), making it easy to run the wires down and under the head of the bed and into a plug on the wall.

Some pads like these apparently can emit a whistling sound from the transformers in the power bricks when heating. I have very sensitive hearing (I easily hear fluorescent light bulbs and old tube TVs from a hundred feet away), but I was unable to hear anything from my units. This may not be true of all units, as sometimes a good bump or jarring can result in the whistling noise in the transformers, in my experience. No promises on this point.

The elastic skirt that wraps around the mattress is quite deep, able to easily handle my pillow-top mattress that is well above average in thickness. The installation instructions, if you need them, are very well done, but the only thing you really need to know is that the plugs go to the head of the bed. Pretty easy. And yes, you can use a power strip to plug both plugs into as long as it is UL listed.

As for actual performance, the pad provides warm, even heating to the entire area that is not at all hot to the touch. It simply feels very much like the bed has already been warmed up with body heat, except that there are no cold spots. Head to foot of the mattress is evenly and comfortably warmed. No more cold feet.

The control unit has 11 heat settings ranging from Low, through 1-9, and up to High with a smooth turning knob. The setting you choose will be highly dependent on how thick your covers are as well as how hot you like your bed. I will say that with a thick comforter on top, the 5 setting was actually hot and 3 was just comfortable. I can't imagine how hot High would be. I'm betting covers would be optional.

On Queen size and larger units, there are actually two control units and two plugs. The heating elements can be set for two different temperatures left side and right side. However, if there is one shortcoming of this design it is that those of us who do not share a queen or larger bed end up with having to set two control units, and the control cord to the unit is not quite long enough to comfortably reach to a nightstand on the opposite side of the bed. Thus you have to wrangle two controls, not one, when you're going to bed. A better solution would have been to have the option of having only one control unit optionally control both heating zones, even if it still required two plugs. A minor inconvenience, but an inconvenience nonetheless.

Lastly, the on/off switch on both control units is the push-button electronic type, not a manual switch. Therefore it would not be possible to plug a power cord into a timer and have the pad start heating up automatically at a preset time. Obviously, there is no built-in feature for this either, though it will turn itself off after 10 hours, automatically. This is probably intended as a safety feature. However, the instructions indicate it will heat up to max heat in about 30 minutes, and lower heat settings will be reached much sooner, depending on other factors such as how thick the covers are.

All in all this seems to be a high quality unit worth the premium over other, lesser models. I'm happy with the purchase so far and have gifted two to other family members.

UPDATE: I ordered three of these, one for myself and two as Christmas gifts. I have been using mine without any problems at all for about 2 months, now. One of the others seems to be working just fine. However, the third one worked only one night and then stopped. I was informed by the gift recipient that it made a very strange electrical noise that second night and then completely stopped working. Since it was a Queen size model, she tried swapping over the control unit from the other side and it still did not work, suggesting the problem was in the pad itself, not the control, though the noise came from the control unit, apparently.

Though it had been some time since I had ordered it, it was still within the return window for Amazon, and as always, Amazon handled it exceptionally well. I received a replacement on the same day I returned the defective one (i.e., they sort of "crossed in the mail"). Shipping both ways was free, though I supplied the return box.

I share this to point out two things. First, check that the units are functioning before you wait too long. Amazon has a limit to the return window, and though I was within it, it wasn't by much. If this is a gift, I'd urge you to encourage the recipient to test it out soon after receipt in case it has to be returned. I would think that running it up to high heat for a while would be sufficient to detect any flaws in the wiring or controls.

Second, though mine has been flawless, and one of the other two seems to have been as well, it appears that build quality on these is not up to snuff. I noted on some other reviews that the control units on at least one made a strange noise. This may be an indication of imminent failure. Both of my controls on my unit have been completely silent. I'm guessing that if they are making a noise, it's a reflection of a fault either in the control or, possibly, in the wiring of the pad itself. Note that there was no smoke, fire, or smoldering on any part of the pad or control units on the one that failed. It simply stopped working.

I've been enjoying my new heated pad this cold winter but there's one tiny annoyance about the materials of construction. The part that goes around the mattress to hold it on is slippery nylon. My allergist recommended an air purifier for my home to help me manage my asthma. I shopped for it online but ended up buying it elsewhere. I have had this one for about a month and it's made a big difference. I currently own two of these purifiers/ionizers and have had them for over a year...one for upstairs and one for downstairs. I absolutely love them. They are not exactly quiet but they are not overtly noisy either. They do help with allergens and I think they have contributed to our household getting sick less. I wouldn't want to be without them.
