Solid cast iron base. Leather is sturdy, holds up to about "3 fires" worth of wood per carry. I have owned it for one year now and with regular use it is not showing any wear.

This is a nice 3-setting standard oil heater, and it DOES have a tip-over protection feature, unlike many. Doesn't make any expansion noises, though the thermostat cycling could wake up light sleepers (just put it on low or med setting and the unit will operate continuously without having to cycle off). Gets hot to the touch not a safety concern for adults but could be for younger children. Not sure what the other reviewer is referring to regarding the u-bolts. It took a sec to figure out how to attach them but they work just fine and hold the wheel bases on securely. My only quibble is that the wheels are not that great not large enough to roll the unit easily.

These oil-filled radiator-type heaters are a real bargain! (and i don't use that word often, or lightly). These things are definite cost-cutters! I have lowered my electric bill for heating from $90 per month, to a varying degree of $30 TO $40 per month, and the $40 bill occurs only when it's especially cold outside. This item runs on 110 Volt wall socket current (unlike the ELECTRICITY-MUNCHING 220 Volt unit in the ceiling, which is actually the A/C unit being used as a heat pump, which is NOT it's intended use, even though it can perform that function, but is SO INEFFICIENT while doing so). I use one of these to keep an entire 800 square foot, 1 bedroom apartment warm-as-needed in the winter, at over 4,000 feet in elevation in northern Arizona. Granted, we don't have winters here like back in my state of origin, Wisconsin. But, when it does get cold here, all i do is crank this baby up to 3/4's of maximum to warm it up, and then lower it to about 50% to maintain the desired temperature, and my electric bill still doesn't reach $50 per month! Quite a break from the old $90 per month! It is NOT recommended that you use a fan with this unit, as blowing air across it messes with the built-in thermostat, but at the coldest times, i do use a small 9 inch fan, set on the lowest speed, either drawing from in front of it, or blowing just over the top of it from behind (you'll find that if you do point a fan directly at it--i did, being me, i had to test it...lol--it will cause so much "SNAPPIN', CRACKLIN' & POPPIN'" that you wouldn't want to continue that VERY noisy way anyway (the internal oil gets cooled too fast as it rises, by the air moving over it from a direct blast from even a small fan, causing it to literally "snap, crackle & pop" when the cooler oil comes back in contact with the hotter oil inside...try it for a few minutes when you get this, you won't hurt it, and you'll see what i mean. It also will snap crackle & pop a bit when it's new out-of-the-box, but this goes away in a few minutes). With a small fan either drawing from the front, from about 2 feet away, or blowing just over the top of it, from about 2 feet behind, you'll have more heat than you know what to do with. And actually, once the room is warmed (and in my case, when all 800 square feet of my 1 bedroom apartment is warmed), it will keep it warm & toasty (sometimes too warm & toasty) all by itself, without any air-flow from a fan. My neighbor, who is our maintenance man at our apartment complex, who lives in a 2 bedroom, 1,250 square foot apartment, introduced me to these on a maintenance call. He uses 2 of these, only because his apartment is a 2 bedroom, with about 55% more square footage than mine. He said he has to be careful not to leave the thermostat set very high, or he "cooks" his family. But, the thing that really got my attention when we talked about these, was that his electric bill went from $120 per month using his A/C unit as a heat pump, to NO MORE THAN $70 per month with two of these, and he said even at the coldest times, he keeps his set at no more than 50%, and uses no fan! Take my word for it folks, if you're looking to save money on your heating bill, whether you have electric-generated heat, or gas-generated heat, or whatever-generated heat, these little helpers WILL save you money! Bank on it! I don't use my heat pump AT ALL anymore! Neither does the maintenance man. And the cost of one unit, for a 1 bedroom apartment, will be recouped in about one month's saving on your electric bill! Same math works for 2 of these units for a 2 bedroom apartment. A great buy! And WAY more efficient than either the ceramic or coil-type forced-air electric heaters. The only thing is, that they don't heat as fast as those other forced-air units, but once they are warmed up, the heat is constant, AND CHEAP!!

The last advice i'll give you is this...BUY THIS IN THE SUMMER MONTHS! I bought mine last July (i waited 'til now to write my review, because i wanted to see exactly how well it performed), because at the time, i paid only $34.99, with FREE Super-Saver shipping, when i bought this in July of 2011! (out of season). During the winter months, when demand for these is up (in season), they go way up in price, but are still worth it at $48.94 (the advertised price as of the time of this review).

The Heater works well, and its cord is very long so it is quite mobile if limited to certain outlets.

Great heater, not like a regular fan heater but it does pretty well keeping a room warm. Recommend buying it if you need something that requires less wattage.

The unit was pretty good. Unfortunately, it completely stopped working 2 days after the return window expired. The thermostat still "clicks", but the heater doesn't turn on. Maybe a blown fuse? So now I am stuck with the option of paying for the return shipping of this bulky item or accepting a $48 loss on a heater that worked for 30 days.

I'm getting another one, I love this sucker so much.

Energy efficient at 400 and 800 watts vs 1500 for a convection heater.

In short, if you:

1) stay pretty much in one spot during the day

2) have high ceilings or your home is really hard to heat

3) have dust allergies

4) use a heater just during your waking hours and pile on the warm blankets at night

5) are not bothered by some light being emitted from your heater

6) have cats or dogs

7) love how it feels when the sun warms up your clothes and skin

8) are concerned about energy efficiency

9) need a heater that won't burn anyone who bumps into it

then this is the space heater for you!

I'm a graduate student living alone in a one-bedroom apartment. Here in Reno, I pay more than $100 for the electricity during the winter season. I figured out that this is probably due to my heaters which are electric-powered. My apartment has a built-in electric heater and I have a Delonghi heater (DFH 333MT). I have no complaints about the Delonghi heater except that it consumes lots of electricity(1500 W) and I just don't like the feeling of the warm air plus it makes me feel dry.

To save money I decided to invest in this little heater and I was not disappointed. It just consumes 400 W (low setting) and 800 W (high setting).

To give you an idea of how good it is, I turned off the built-in electric heater in my apartment and the Delonghi heater and I did not feel cold at all even in the LOW SETTING.

The lights at LOW SETTING is not as bright as I thought. But in case you cannot sleep with its emitted light, I suggest that you put a blindfold. The light feels good. This device has also a safety mechanism. If you tip it, it will stop working and if it reached a certain high temperature,it will automatically stop. To sum up, a good buy.

This heater is made in China. I just hope that it will last for a long time.

UPDATE: In colder evenings, you need to use the HIGH SETTING. The light is too bright but the heat is enough esp. if you are at least 3 feet apart from it. In my case, I still need to turn on my apartment's built-in electric heater but only at LOW SETTING. This Soleus heater is just not enough to heat my whole room which is connected to the kitchen.

Well, it has been more than a year since I updated this review. I now live in Moscow, ID (from Reno, NV)doing postdoctoral studies and this heater still works!

I bought this product to help heat a large loft. Knowing that hot air would simply blow away and be expensive, I thought I would focus on something energy efficient that could target a location. So here's a little breakdown.

The effective range of this product is limited. We keep it about 5-8 feet away to heat an one person at a time. It really has a max target area diameter of about 4-5 feet from that distance. Left on for a while in a small room, Like a bathroom...it does eventually heat up that space, but otherwise it's for very target heating.

Positives:

Warm instantly when in target area

Not hot to touch

energy efficient

Negative:

Really bright, you can't look at the thing for more than a few seconds when it's on high. We refer to it as "turning on the sun." Imagine a 50 watt bulb with a silver reflecting dish pointed at you.

See the angle that it's pointed in in the picture? It's slightly up. It's as low as it goes, it doesn't go directly straight or down why does this matter? We'll because say I want to heat myself from behind so it doesn't blind me I can't place it on a shelf or table.. It has to be on the floor and every chair I know has a back...so no help there. It will always shine on you. I'd also use it to heat my bed but I can't point it down at the covers. So basically it must be on the floor only.

Overall, a good product if you need target heating, from the floor, and can deal with brightness.

Honest reviews on Soleus Air MS-09 Oscillating Reflective Heater

If you want heat, this one's for you. It puts out more heat at 400 watts than most 1500 watt heaters, so it'll cost far less to run. I haven't even set it on high (800 watts) because I haven't needed to. Some may object to the light it emits but that's like complaining about the sun because it's too bright if you stare at it. You can set it up peripherally or at a slight angle away from your direct vision, avoid the light and still get plenty of heat. Buy this now while it's on sale and you can get free shipping. I don't know how long these halogen bulbs last, but it really does the job.

UPDATE (11/07):

After using this for two years, it's easily paid for itself. However, I bought one for a friend and it and its replacement (covered by Soleus under warranty) were defective. The third one she received seems to be OK, however she prefers the Presto Parabolic Heater since she claims it heats a wider area and doesn't emit as much light. The Presto costs half again as much ($75), may do slightly better but also uses more electricity, so figure out what's right for you. I should add I don't use the Soleus at night, it's less intrusive and more efficient to use an electric blanket instead.

UPDATE (1/13):

Still going! I bought another Soleus a few years ago, slightly different model but both work like charms. I'm convinced this is the best value in space heaters and I'm glad to see they're still available. Look for the best deal and get yours while they last things this good are usually phased out for more expensive/lesser quality "upgrades".

I recommend this heater, especially if want to stay toasty warm while saving energy. With energy costs going up dramatically this winter, one real way of saving money is to heat the area you are in, rather than the entire house. In the old days, the wood stove would heat the central area of the house, and the bedrooms would be bone cold and one would be buried under a pile of blankets at night. This might not be our favorite thing, but was wise in terms of energy use (and saved a lot of wood-chopping!).

This heater would allow one to keep the temperature of the home much cooler, while staying nice and warm while reading, watching TV, working at the computer, etc. Another advantage to the heater is where the people in the home have different personal "thermostats". Some Nordic types like to be cool all the time and even sleep with a window open every night. Others like to be toasty warm all the time, seemingly lacking the inner furnace that keeps others comfortable in relatively cool (60-65°) household winter temperatures. In addition, as people age, some want to be even warmer as is often the case in nursing homes and I know of those who keep their winter house temperature at 85° on the coldest of days. Unbelievable to me both in terms of energy cost and energy waste.

The bottom line: this heater will save you money, and might help household relationships by allowing those who want to be toasty warm all the time to be so, while allowing others who prefer to be cool, to be comfortable as well.

Read the directions and keep them. When the heater trips off, which can happen from movement or if it is knocked over, etc., it will not come back on until it has cooled, which can take 10 minutes. This is a wise safeguard for this and any electric heater, as they do produce warmth, and one must use common sense in using them. Another example: one should always use a heavy-duty extension cord with electric heaters, which is mentioned in the manual. All easy to do, but important to be aware of in these days of central heating, when many are unfamiliar with space heaters and do not take the time to read the directions. It is always sad to hear of house fires, carbon monoxide poisoning, etc., during the holiday season, as people forget basic safety matters in their desire to be warm.

Poorly packaged, arrived broken on bottom where I could not see until later, weighs 86 lbs and hard to lift or move around, claims to be a "heat pump" but in reality only uses reverse compression to heat and does not extract heat from the outside air so does not save you energy or money. Also, requires maintenance (if unit works correctly) to remove condensate which may contain the cause of Legionnaire's disease. I do not recommend this because of poor design, packaging, and other problems including leaking water.

I ordered 1 of these and next thing i know my bank account is overdrawn because the sent me 2 of these things. But anyways, the directions are easy to understand and setup of the unit is easy.

I ordered this for my wife who has MS and cant get her body temp too high.

What a mistake I made. This unit sits below the window of our bedroom (14 by 14ft) and does not cool the room at ALL. The house temp at the moment is 85 Degrees and our bedroom is 82 degrees with this thing running for 4 days straight. It seems to blow out cold air, but the unit just isn't as powerful as advertised. I am going to return both to Amazon for a refund. Wish me luck

Honest reviews on Soleus Air 12,000 BTU Portable Electric Air Conditioner

I am 99% satisfied with this multi-purpose unit. I have a 1,300 square foot basement, and I got it to cool, heat, and especially dehumidify it. It effectively cools the entire basement no problem. I have not had to use the heat yet. It was very quick and easy to install in my window. No one should expect an indoor air conditioner to run like a whisper, so I don't complain about the noise. It really is not any louder than I would expect, and it is not terribly quiet either (sorry for the imprecise description).

The one drawback I have with this unit is that its dehumidifier feature does not seem to be a primary function. Dehumidifiers often have humidity controls and humidistats, but I do not think this unit has one. When it is on dehumidify, it just keeps running, regardless of the relative humidity. You will need a humidity gauge in your basement to know when to turn it off or how much to run it, otherwise, it will hike up your electric bill.

I like the fact that it runs from a regular 120V outlet, is attractive, easy-to-use, has clear instructions, is easily portable, and effective. I am quite happy with this as a multi-purpose unit, and the value is unbeatable.

The adapter that connects the window slat and the tubing was too wide to fit into the window sill. We had to purchase wood, weather stripping, and window locks to allow the window to open wider. Machine itself works great!

I have had one of these heaters for four years now, and use it in my 1000 square foot workshop (concrete floor and high ceilings make this space a challenge to heat). It does put out a considerable amount of heat, though it tends to be localized as there is no fan. Nearby the unit it gets quite toasty, and will raise the temperature of my shop 15 to 20 degrees after about an hour and a half.

The secret to good performance is to use nice clean kerosene, and be sure it is not contaminated with water. It performs best on clear kerosene, but this is the most expensive fuel. I have had decent luck using red dyed kerosene (road tax exempt). I by it at a local bulk petroleum jobber and as of yesterday (April 5, 2010) I paid about 16.50, with tax, for 5 gallons in California. It burns clean, but I find I need to clean the wick a couple of times each season. I get a bit longer than 12 hours per tank, which is great. Make sure you change the batteries at the start of winter, and any time the glow of the starter seems to dim. I go through one or two sets of C batteries each season.

Cleaning the wick takes about 10 minutes there are two screws and a knob to remove, and then the top slides off reveling the base. I use a small putty scraper to flick off the carbonized portion of the wick. If you find the unit sputtering or hard to light that is an indicator that this service is needed.

I have replaced the wick once over the past four years. Do this outside, and wear rubber gloves as the kerosene has a strong odor. It is not too hard, but you do need to take care that it is aligned correctly so that it cranks all the way up for lighting, and more importantly all the way down to ensure it extinguishes the flame. It did take me two tries to get this right, and I am reasonably handy, though a more careful reading of the instructions would have helped.

Overall I am very happy with the product and am considering purchasing a second one for my shop to reduce the ramp up time. The maintenance required keeps it from being a 5 star review, but the trade off is lower operating costs when compared to electricity or especially propane.

Easy to operate and puts out a lot of heat. Wife and I both enjoy using it. The safety grill makes it safe for our preschool aged children.

We initially purchased this for back-up heat. However, our home has 11-foot ceilings and just one 1500 watt wall heater per room. So, we're using this heater regularly to get things initially warmed up in the morning. We run it on cold mornings for about an hour or two and it warms the whole downstairs.

Lighting this heater inside is fine, but some people may want to shut it off outside as there is a bit of smell on shutdown. If the batteries are low on the starter, you can also light it with a match.

Kerosene fuel is a bit expensive, but the heat value is quite high per gallon. You can cut the cost by buying in larger quantities -55 gallon drum drops the cost to about $5 a gallon...which puts heater operation cost at just under $1 an hour for fuel. 1.9 gallon tank burns 10-12 hours Otherwise, buying in 5 gallon containers from the hardware store puts the price at $9/gallon...but that's still enough to get through an electrical outage.

Stove oil (red dyed kerosene) is also fine (says this in the instructions that come with the heater), but will gum up the wick a little faster. However, stove oil is under $3.50 a gallon right now...so the price is right.

**Update:

Heater working great. I replaced the factory installed wick about a month ago, and the new wick is working even better. The first wick became clogged over time with the red dye from the 55 gallon drum of kerosene. However, it was cheaper overall even with the wick change to go for the drum. I add a couple teaspoons of denatured alcohol to each fill, and another teaspoon during the dry-burn -this helps a lot to keep the wick in good condition and to burn off any water that collects in the heater's sump. Denatured alcohol can be purchased locally in the painting section of your local hardware store.

I recently had the drum refilled with #1 stove oil from the local heating oil supplier -at $3.89/gallon. Stove oil #1 is the same as red dyed kerosene and works great (do not use #2 stove oil). The supplier has a minimum of 100 gal order, but I chatted with the manager and arranged for a fill that matched up with another delivery at no extra charge. Earlier in the season, I purchased a 5-gallon can of K-1 clear kerosene. I refill that can from the drum, then fill the heater with it. A good hand-pump to pull from the drum: Fill-Rite SD62 Hand Pump Rotary 2-Vane Curved Spout

The heater will burn 11 hours continuously, and heats the entire house all day. Granted, that's about $7.80 for a day of heating, which is more expensive than electric. However, our family loves the quality of heat it puts out.

We live in a 3rd story condo, and are planning a New Years party. We just redesigned our patio built benches, made cushions, and I wanted the patio to be comfortable to sit on while outside. Our patio is open to the east, and also open in the nook to the north. So I needed something that was going to produce enough heat to keep the patio warm. We tried two other heaters (electric) before buying this one. They were horrible!

I bought mine at home depot, and they have the fuel there. I think I have a different model (DuraHeat Convection Kerosene Heater Model DH2304), but it is the same amount of BTU's and the the same design, just looks a little different. This heater is amazing...we filled up half the tank, and have used it the last few nights to test it out. It heats up the whole area and keeps the heat coming! I plan on putting a sheet up in the nook using an expandable rod, (don't worry the sheet won't hang near the heater) I just want to try to block some of the cold air from coming in! A lot of heat comes out of the top, so I am hoping it will keep more of the heat in the patio area!

If you are looking for a great patio heater, this is the one to buy! Especially if you live in a condo! I am pretty sure we are not allowed to have propane, plus who wants a 20lb propane tank hanging around! This heater is ok'd for indoor, and if we ever loose our heat, we won't be cold! As long as we have kerosene!

There are instructions for the care of this heater, and I suggest you read them. There is important information about dry burning and cleaning the wick etc. They stress the importance of these things to keep your heater working properly! I am new to this (Giant Lantern) but the instructions are very detailed and easy to understand! Good luck!

Kerosene use is always a slightly sloppy experience. This unit and the included pump minimize it. I used it to help heat my house after Super storm Sandy. It lasted around 9 to 10 hours with my flame height settings. It was a real lifesaver for us. Thank goodness we have a gas station nearby with bulk Kerosene. The bulk kerosene burned cleanly and odor free in this unit.

This item really surprised me, it heated up the house, better than using propane where I live, as long as you make sure you get the right fuel, it tells you what to buy, the odorless K1. I was actualy warm this past winter when it snowed, and felt real heat:) Great heater. If your house is larger than 2000 sq ft, you might want to get one for each floor depending on how the heat rises and spreads out. Very happy with this purchase. Just be sure to use caution, and follow the directions as with most heaters. I put this on a brick area in the living room, it heated that room, and the heat rose up stairs just fine. My house is 1900 sq ft, so it was perfect.

I bought the bigger size and the cord went loose and power was on intermittently. I got this smaller one instead to give the company another try. It turned out much better as the size is smaller, less time to boil medicine. Plus I was making medicine for my 7 yo son. It was better to cook with less water, so the medicine is more concentrate and less meds for a kid to take it.

I originally wrote a very positive review of this unit. I researched and debated everything and purchased this a my primary unit in bedroom and a cheaper LG "throw away unit" for living room. I was considering the Khul unit but truth is no unit is perfect and you should not have to spend $700 for a good bedroom AC. I have to be honest this unit worked great the first week then just started to make noise and rattle. I like to keep the unit on low when I sleep and when the compressor kicks this thing makes all sorts of noises and no one noise is identical and I have not slept well. I have shimmed, put padding etc on all sorts of parts and it still just keeps making noise. The noises are more prevalent on low and not on high and is only when the cover is on take the cover off and it is generally fine. The unit does cool well and quickly and have a great feature set.

POSITIVE/CONCLUSION: The throw away LG unit is purchased for almost $150 less that is also 8000 btu is a rock star. The thing does everything I ask it to do and does it well. It does not make noises when the compressor kicks you just here a slight uptick in the unit. I would rather buy a new unit every 3 years then have a unit for 6 or 7 that is only going to ultimately frustrate the crap out of me. I was really hesitant to buy this AC. Originally the AC was made by Panasonic. When Panasonic made it, it was a terrific AC and very quiet. I had to replace my 10,000 BTU Panasonic AC with the Friedrich version of the same AC two years ago. That 10,000 Friedrich version sounds like a truck. Watching TV is usually a real problem. Cool the room, turn off the AC, listen to TV and repeat.

When my 7800 Panasonic from 2005 hit the dust this year, I deliberated. I heard the Friedrich CP08G10 in the store and it seemed quiet enough. I seem to have gotten lucky. The new Friedrich is pretty quiet. Maybe it is not as great as the original Panasonic version, but it is definitely quiet enough so that I can sleep. I don't guarantee you will have the same experience since I think quality control is poor at Friedrich. Also, I am writing this review after only two nights of use. But, I am feeling positive. Suggest you try to buy an AC in an undamaged box. I have a feeling these ACs can't take the rough and tumble of shipping.

Best Deals for Friedrich CP08G10 7800 btu - 115 volt - 10.8 EER Chill series room

When the machine turns on and off (cycles), it makes a fairly loud noise. For power save mode, it turns on for about a minute (presumably checking room temp) then turns back off, in order to then turn back on to actually start cooling the room. The noise is enough to startle me. It means I don't use the power save mode anywhere near as much as I did with an older unit I had before.

It is also not that quiet overall. It's not loud per se but it's not unnoticeable. I'm surprised this is the one AC I was told is "the quietest". If that's the case, AC makers have gone backwards in the past decade. My 12yr old unit before then (by Panasonic, no longer made) was far quieter even in its old age, and had the same efficiency rating.

Honest reviews on Friedrich CP08G10 7800 btu - 115 volt - 10.8 EER Chill series room

I bought this unit to replace an old Qstar through the wall unit. I wanted to find a unit that would fit into the existing hole in the wall without having to make the hole larger. Friedrich makes a Kuhl unit that will do that nicely but $699 was more than I was willing to spend right now. So to install this unit as a replacement for the old Qstar you have to remove the old sleeve and install a spacer to the right or left of the sleeve to make up for this units smaller width. I used a pressure treated 2"x6" which worked great* ( you may have to shave a 16th off the thickness for best fit). Install the Chill sleeve , chaulk/insulate where necessary and slip the unit into the sleeve. As for the Chill unit itself...seems to be working fine the unit noise seem to vary from very quiet to a mild rumbling for time to time. Not sure if this normal or not (while the compressor is cycling) but hopefully the unit will be durable. I have been running it on and off now for 3 weeks. I hope this helps someone out there who might be looking to replace an older unit without major reconstruction of a preexisting install.

P.S...I do agree with other reviews stating that Money Saver mode is noisy. I question how it could actually save any money since it seems to cycle constantly. Very annoying, often it just kicks on for 2-3 seconds shut off and 30secs later do it again. This mode will keep you awake at night. I suggest you just leave it in cool mode and set a temperature.

I purchased it 1 month ago, so it is still relatively untested. It cools our large studio room quickly, it is relatively quiet, it does not wake me at night and it was recommended by Consumers Report.

Perfect for gently warming a room that central heating has shortchanged. Fan is quiet. Old-fashioned analog thermostat is adequate, don't need electronics in everything. Unobtrusive enclosure. I've reached the Amazon 20-word minimum, enough said.

Fitting this into my fireplace was easy and the remote very intuitive. The lighting and look inside a closed fireplace is close enough to real that is works well providing a nice ambiance. Heat supply is just ok.

Looks nice, good flame effects, very quiet. It does take a long time to heat up a area if you let it get cold, but will maintain the temperature after you get it the temperature up. We built it into a cabinet in our 5th wheel and it was a nice upgrade. Beats the heck out of a noisy space heater!
