I'm really happy with this coffee maker, having chosen it over the Technivorm Moccamaster Coffee Brewer With Thermo Carafe Technivorm 9587. It brews extremely quickly (about 7 minutes), and I measured the temperature of the water coming from the spout at about the 195F-200F range, so it's in the right range for extracting optimum flavor -the brew from this machine is just at the point of being tip-of-the-tongue scalding. The water is dispensed at a number of different points into the filter, and looking at the grounds afterwards you can tell that the dispersion pattern works well, as the coffee grounds remain clumped at the bottom of the filter, rather than being thinly spread across the entire filter.

Note that this is a minimalistic coffee maker. It is fairly compact, has an unassuming appearance, and there are no glowing dials, no HUDs, no clocks. There's one control: the on/off switch. It has no timer. It doesn't have a brew stopper, so you have to let the coffee maker finish before you can pour yourself a cup (since the coffee maker brews so quickly, this isn't too big of a deal). You cannot navigate your kitchen at night by the light from this coffeemaker, nor can you signal passing UFOs.

Nonetheless, it makes great coffee.

At the time I'm writing this review there were no reviews of this coffee maker and I almost overlooked it and ordered a different one. I would normally wait longer to post a review but this review may bring others attention to this machine. I have only used mine twice but I know from those two times this machine extracts more from the grinds than my Starbucks Barrista did because I can feel the effects of the caffeine after 3 cups (about 3/4 of the carafe) whereas I didn't feel it at all from the Starbucks unit (also 8 cup capacity) after a whole pot. I don't notice that the coffee is any hotter than it was from the Starbucks unit but it is piping hot. My Starbucks unit was 8 years old and had started to leak water on the counter during the brewing process and shut itself off before the reservoir was empty requiring multiple restarts. I am not trying to compare the Bonavita to the Starbucks because I did not descale the Starbucks unit anywhere near as frequently as I should have which may well have lead to the leaking problems. The Starbucks unit did brew a very good pot of coffee.

This machine is one of only four coffee makers certified by the Specialty Coffee Assoc. of America for home use. The certification is based on the machine's ability to heat the water to 195-205 degrees which is the ideal temperature to extract maximum flavor from the grinds. Bonavita claims on their packaging this is the only coffee maker sold with a 1400 watt heating element. The other three certified machines are a Bunn HG Home Brewer (sold on Amazon) which is slightly less money but when I read the reviews is very unreliable, the Technivorm Moccamaster which is $300 (sold on Amazon) the reviews indicated quality control problems, and the Lance Larkin BE 112 Brew Express $300+ (not sold on Amazon) which requires a water line permanently installed and is designed to be built into cabinetry. Since I was not going to spend $300 the choice was between the Bonavita and the Bunn but I immediately excluded the Bunn because of the numerous recent reviews indicating it stopped working and had to be replaced sometimes more than once. Bunn is known for high quality machines but it is very apparent this is not one of them.

The Bonavita's thermal carafe is manufactured by Melitta and has a glass liner. It can be purchased separately from Bonavita (perhaps Melitta too) and is so satisfactory to use I would recommend it even if you don't purchase the Bonavita coffee maker. One of the things I noted repeatedly in many reviews of thermal carafe coffee makers (all the brands Amazon sells) was users having difficulty using the tops of their carafes and/or dripping when pouring a cup. This carafe has a very easy to use top that screws on and has a trigger for one handed usage. My Starbucks carafe always dripped and the center spring loaded button broke on two tops. I am thrilled that I don't have to wipe the carafe and counter every time I pour a cup anymore.

Because of the caffeine effect from this machine's brew the next pot I'm going to use 3 rather than the 4 coffee measure spoons I have always used to brew 8 cups and see how that tastes. The machine is very easy to use, I simply fill the carafe and pour into the non-detachable reservoir than the filter basket sits on top of the carafe (with the carafe's top removed). After brewing which takes about 8 minutes you simply remove the filter basket and screw the top on. Again, because of the caffeine effect I have yet to finish a whole pot so I can't say how long the carafe keeps the coffee very hot but it is still piping hot 2 hours after brewing. My guess is probably 4 hours, maybe 5 like my Starbucks thermal carafe. It uses #4 cone filters and Bonavita claims using the paper filters is preferable to the metal style filter because the paper filters absorb more coffee oils.

The machine appears to be well built and all but the bottom and recessed drip tray area are stainless steel. Two potential downsides of this machine are 1) you cannot pour a cup until the brewing cycle has completed (doesn't bother me but may bother others) and 2) there is no timer function which for the cost of the machine I think there should be. It is not a feature I used very often on my Starbucks unit so I'm OK without a timer but others may want one.

The reason I rated the Bonavita 4 stars rather than 5 is because the machine is in such limited distribution the $149 price is in my view not a deal like almost every other coffee maker Amazon sells. There are however two ways to look at the price, I read an online review which favorably compared the Bonavita to the Technivorm unit which costs twice as much. Still, I think at some point this machine will have wider distribution and the price will come down. If you go to Bonavita's website they list the resellers and everybody sells it for $149-$159. I think closer to $100-120 would be a good deal.

It does have a 2 year warranty and at this point given my limited usage of the machine I would say that I am very satisfied with it. It does brew an excellent pot of coffee, is easy to use and clean and I like its appearance. So if you want an excellent pot of coffee poured from a drip free carafe and can overlook the lack of a timer and the ability to pour a cup before the brewing cycle has completed and don't mind the price this is a choice well worthy of consideration.

I was mostly satisfied with my Starbucks Barrista except for the carafe always dripping so thus far I like this machine better because the carafe doesn't drip. Here's a tip for Starbucks machine owners, call their customer service when yours stops working and complain that they have no support because they no longer sell coffee makers. When I did I was initially offered a $10 gift card but ended up with a $25 gift card.

On a side note, I was truly amazed by all the problems other owners reported with virtually every thermal carafe coffee maker Amazon sells. From machines that stopped working to those that spilled water/coffee all over the floor/counter to tops that leaked and/or were difficult to use. I probably spent a good 6-7 hours researching all the thermal carafe models filtered by highest reviews and had selected the Kitchen Aid 12 cup model but before I ordered it I quickly reviewed the models one more time and caught this one on the last of 7 pages of machines with no reviews. I'm glad I did. I hope my review will cause others to consider this machine.

If I encounter any issues with this machine I will update this review.

WRITTEN REVIEW:

Today I received my Bonavita Thermal Coffee Maker and made my first brew with it.

First impressions: This is one fast and impressive little machine. No wonder it garnered the Specialty Coffee Association of America's coveted Certified Brewer Equipment award: one of only four machines to do so as of this writing. This machine makes very hot coffee indeed: I measured the coffee in the preheated thermal carafe right after brewing at 188° F. With a non-preheated carafe the coffee was 183.2° F right after brewing completed.

Temperatures during brewing were at 195° F at 58 seconds into brewing and reached as high as 205.8° F briefly at the 4:04 minute mark and at 203.3° F at the end of the brewing cycle (see photos). Brewing time was 5 minutes 48 seconds, so just under six minutes.

A photo is attached of what you receive with this brewer, and the list, like the brewer, is very basic.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

* Extra filters. A starter pack will get you going for the first few days.

* If you choose it, a gold tone filter, instead of paper filters. I purchased the Cuisinart GTF Gold Tone Filter, which fits inside the Filter Basket, in case you'd like to fit your Bonavita with a permanent filter. Be advised that gold tone filters do let in sediment (depending on how your coffee is ground), so if you use a gold tone filter, you may get sediment at the bottom of the pot. As a sidenote, so far, the Bonavita brew times have remained within the recommended SCAA guidelines when I tested it.

* ETA about the gold tone filter: Although I am a fan of gold tone filters, I have become a big fan of the Melitta filters since my Bonavita purchase as they have no paper taste. So I am sticking with paper Melitta filters for my Bonavita.

MY FIRST BREW:

The instructions are basic and easy to follow. Using the "Bonavita's Exceptional Brew" manual, I measured 7 grams of coffee for every cup or a total of 56 grams of coffee to make 8 cups. (Bonavita recommends between 7 and 9 grams of coffee per 5 ounces of water. The Bonavita "cup" size is a 5-ounce cup.)

You can also measure your coffee to taste or use the scoop size you usually prefer if that is your preferred method. More detailed instructions are in the manual.

I put a paper filter in the filter basket, folding the crimped edges of the filter (per the instructions on the back of the filter package) -the filter fits perfectly this way. I put the coffee into the filter, then placed the filter basket on top of the thermal carafe. I placed the thermal carafe onto the coffee maker, put in 40 ounces of filtered water, then turned it on. Voila! It began to brew.

The brewing cycle is fast and efficient at just under 6 minutes. I was expecting the filter basket might be clumsy to remove: not the case. Having previously used Chemex, Krups, Braun and even Cuisinart (with all of their dreaded innards), the simplicity of removing just the filter basket and replacing it with the thermal carafe lid was marvelous. One complete turn and the carafe lid was in place.

MY FIRST POUR:

My first impressions of the coffee? Delicious and strong. Hot at 188° F. I went back to the carafe three hours after making the coffee and took off the lid. Still hot. You *will* get hot coffee from this machine: blissfully hot coffee.

HOW TO CLEAN THE CARAFE:

There are a few reviews about exploding carafes. I clean my carafe by only swishing warm water inside of it (see the pink sheet of instructions). I don't put sponges, plastic dish scrubbers, or anything else inside the carafe. It's been fine so far.

A NOTE ABOUT PLASTIC TASTE, OR RATHER, THE LACK THEREOF:

There is no plastic taste with this machine. If I put my sensitive nose into it, I smell no plastic smell. I don't taste plastic in my coffee. Even with the first brew right out of the box. This is likely due to Bonavita's use of BPA free plastic. Hallelujah!

PROS:

* Very hot coffee.

* Speedy brew cycle of 6 minutes: within SCAA guidelines

* 1400-watt heating element (aluminum)

* Auto off after 15 minutes

* Glass-lined carafe that keeps coffee hot for hours

* One-full-twist easy-on carafe lid

* Easy off filter basket makes clean-up easy

Note:

* I'm only mentioning this so people will be aware in case it happens to them. After brewing, when I lifted out the paper filter from the filter basket, there was a small amount of coffee that had not drained from the filter basket. Apparently this has to do with the position of the hole in the filter basket and is for better extraction. I removed the paper filter and simply tipped the filter basket with its coffee directly into the thermal carafe. The amount of coffee is so small it is insignificant. ETA: After doing this a few times, it depends on the amount of coffee or your grind. The water might drain into the carafe on its own.

WHO SHOULD GET IT:

* If you love coffee; and you just want a deliciously brewed, piping hot, delicious cup of coffee

* If you want a machine that produces fantastic coffee but without all the "bells and whistles" such as programmable features, brew and pause, etc.

* If you are looking for a truly great thermal carafe: one that keeps the coffee hot, pours easily, and has an easily removable and replaceable lid

* If you want a machine that is easy to clean

* If you want a machine that easily fits under cabinets: my kitchen cabinets are low at 17 3/4" and the Bonavita fits under them easily at 11 5/8" high.

Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with this machine.

Making good coffee is actually quite simple:

1. Buy freshly roasted beans.

2. Grind the beans immediately before brewing.

3. Brew with 195 to 205 degree water.

The brewer can only help you with #3, and although there are various manual methods you can use, there are only two drip machines that are rated to consistently deliver the water at the right temperature: the Technivorm Moccamaster Coffee Brewer with Thermo Carafe and the Bonavita. I've been using the Bonavita for a month now, and I'm a very happy camper.

PROS

* The Bonavita heats the water quickly and brews at the temperature they claim. I measured the temp myself and it was right at 200 degrees.

* It makes a full pot (40 ounces) in 5-1/2 to 6 minutes. That's how long it takes to extract all the flavor from the grinds, so you don't want a brewer that works any faster. Of course, the coarseness of your grind affects the time. Too coarse and the water flows through too fast; too fine, and it bogs down and over extracts.

* It brews smaller amounts well, too. Just for myself, I make 3 cups (15 ounces) at a time. It takes two or three minutes and tastes just as good as a full pot.

* The showerhead design distributes the water evenly so all the grinds get to participate.

* The design is simple and attractive with a small footprint.

* I'm delighted with the lack of useless bells and whistles. The Bonavita's only "feature" is that it shuts off automatically. I'm a believer in unplugging small appliances when they aren't in use (let me tell you about my toaster oven experience sometime... ) but the auto shut-off is a nice safety feature in case I forget.

* The thermal carafe has a well-designed lid that screws on and keeps it sealed, so it should keep the coffee hot as long as coffee could be expected to stay hot in any thermos. I don't really keep coffee sitting around, so I have no comparison for that.

CONS

* The only real "con" is the price. I don't see why such a simple appliance has to cost $150, but since the only competition costs twice that much, the Bonavita is the best buy.

* This is really more of an FYI than a con. A lot of steam comes out of the top so you probably don't want to leave it directly under the upper cabinet while brewing. Just pull it forward.

UPDATE

Please don't let my comment about the steam discourage you from trying this great brewer. Obviously, any brewer that heats the water adequately is going to put out some steam. Just to be clear, the steam vents are the dot pattern you can see in the picture, on top above the basket, so the Bonavita design nicely directs the steam in one small area.

Keep in mind that you have to pull this or probably any brewer out from under the cabinet in order to fill the water tank anyway, so it's easy enough to just leave it pulled out while you brew.

ONE YEAR LATER

I've been using the Bonavita daily for more than a year now and it has held up well. I have no complaints.

We bought the Bonavita January 3, 2013 and it worked very well. I appreciated the simplicity: it is easy to see how much water you have put in, one button to press makes operation simple. However, in late March (3/27/2013) the water did not heat. I tried again the next day with no luck. I'm guessing this is a bad heating element that should be replaced since it should work for more than 3 months. When I attempted to report the malfunction, I discovered the real problem:

The customer service is the worst I have ever encountered. Should something go wrong, you must email them with a full description of the problem. You must include several numbers off of the maker and carafe, so have those available. They will then email you back within 5 WEEKS! I am writing this review at the limit of the 5 weeks (5/2/2013) since I filed the service request. I have been very carefully scanning my junk mail folder to be sure I don't miss the email but they have not contacted me yet. For those of us who have a daily coffee or more, 5 weeks is really unacceptable. I have been using my back-up french press for the last month and the ridiculous delay has given me time to fall in love with it.

If you decide to buy the Bonavita coffee maker, be aware that if it breaks, you're on your own.

I put this on my Amazon Wish List for Christmas (2009) and my wonderful husband (Santa Baby) bought it for me! I have to agree with the negative reviewers that it doesn't heat perfectly even, but it's really close and it sure beats the heated towel racks. (Now those are a waste of money!) I don't roll my towel as it shows in the picture. I turn it sideways, make a circle (like wrapping around body) and let it drop naturally into the bin. My towel is HOT when I'm ready for it. Sometimes the part of the towel that touches the bottom floor of the unit is a little cooler, but it's still warm. I've even put my pj's in there before bed. Awesome!

For the reviewer who said their towel didn't get hot at all; it sounds like you're heating unit is broken. Maybe you can exchange it.

Update: It's been almost a year and I still love this thing. I've found that if my towel is still a little damp from the previous day, it gets even hotter in the towel warmer! I never thought I'd actually hope my towel would still be damp the next day!

This version of Towel Spa was unable to produce even the slightest bit of warmth for my bath towel. I bought it because I have the original version, the one that only holds one towel, and it is excellent. I thought it would be great to be able to warm two towels or my robe, so I decided to 'upgrade'. I was totally disappointed. On the other hand, the original one towel version is fantastic. Treat yourself to it. You'll be glad you did.

For a little background, we put two wall hanging towel bar warmers in my kid's bath to accomodate up to 8 large towels when we remodeled, because we were able to add an electrical outlet on the wall. Well, that must of cost us $200 for each rack and $300 for the electrical. We are a family of four....2 men and 2 women. The ladies like two towels each...one for hair and body. The kids' bathroom is used by guests as well, so the guest towels are warmed. Having this was so great that I wanted a cheaper solution for the master bath until it was remodeled, because we have avoided our shower just because of the warm towels.

Well, I found this and it is the greatest!! It fits on top of the toilet tank, so it reaches the existing electrical outlet. Yes, you must run the towels for TWO 5-minute heating cycles to get perfection, but it's a small sacrifice that is well worth it. I put it on first thing in the morning, so it can complete a full cycle. Then, when I enter the shower I hit the button, again. The result is better than any towel rack or bar, because the heat is kept inside and around the towels. I, too, found that it did smell the first week of use, but the smell is gone now.

Also, we take this RVing and Skiing with us, because it is light. The family is happy when we travel! It is WELL WORTH THE MONEY for all the luxury. In fact, it really is a bargain and time saver compared to our wall hanging ones that took time to install. For us, the benefit of having it has already paid for itself, and we just bought it in Dec. 2009. It was a well received gift item, too, at Christmas. BUY YOURS TODAY; It's a must have item!!!

I also wanted this as a gift for my Birthday this year. It just doesn't work as well as I thought it would. The outside edges of the spa heat fine. The inside of the towels, nothing. I have tried rolling the towels, folding the towels..still not heating anything but the edges of the towels.I really can't say I would tell anyone to buy this product.

I found out what the problem was with this unit I hired a second tech and he showed me where the freon had leaked out of. then he vacuumed the pressure and tried to recharge the outside unit with refrigerant and sure enough it leaked out of where showed me.

This is very inconvenient for my business' opening day

another thing wrong with the system was a thermo sensor he told me it is used for the heat pump.

This unit was missing the mounting plate for the indoor unit when it was delivered, and the instructions have no way to contact the manufacturer. No county, no address, no phone, NOTHING! I don't even know where this thing is made!

My electrician was confounded by the wiring. Apparently the blue wires they use are not standard and should not have even passed UL.

I am going to try to return this but I threw away the boxes and it weighs a ton. This was a mistake to buy. I regret it.

I have 3 mini-splits, 2 LG and this off brand. It has brand name components inside and Chinese cabinet outside. It works flawlessly

in all modes. For longevity I would suggest having a tech draw a vacuum rather than bleeding system before 1st start up.

Product is not a complete system. This is for the outdoor condenser, indoor air exchanger, condensate drip line, mounting hardware, remote, and NO copper line set for refrigerant. This is very disappointing because manual shows parts INCLUDING line set.

Everything else is included but the line set. Without it, there is no refrigerant circulated to the outside unit and therefore, no cool air. If you purchased a Computer with a hard drive, keyboard, mouse, and monitor and it was missing the memory, you would probably feel the disappointment that I feel.

The system was promptly shipped in two well packed boxes and arrived with amazon prime speed safely to my front door.

3.

The seller promptly contacted my email and explained why he didn't include the line set, but at one time did. He sells the complete package on ebay, so my request was for him to send me the line set.

No good. After a quick exchange over the phone, he is unwilling to complete my order, unless I want to purchase a set for $150!

He did offer a refund upon return. At $40 shipping to me and another $40 return, it is cheaper for me to order the missing line set than return. I found 25' connection set for $65 with free shipping on ebay, so I will order and install the system.

This mini split system showed up in three different packages, and one of them included the tubing/wiring/connections, etc. That was an unexpected surprise, and makes the price we paid an even greater value.

We haven't hooked it up yet, as we are remodeling the room it will go in, but it looks exactly as we expected. I will review again once we hook it up.

First off, I would like to point out that I shopped both online and in stores for an electric fireplace for months. When I finally decided on this one, I still thought hard about it for weeks before I actually placed my order. This is the first time that I have ever ordered furniture online and I was very nervous about not seeing the product before making my purchase, but the other reviews had me convinced and the price was unbeatable anywhere else I looked (including Big Lots). So I ordered it, and I have had it three months now.

Shipping:

My new media console and fireplace arrived at my house (in Indiana) only a few days after I placed my order. It arrived in two very large, very heavy packages. One package contained the materials for the console itself and the other, which had "FRAGILE" written in large letters across it was the electric fireplace. There are many different pieces to the cabinet itself, so I recommend doing what I did which was opening the box somewhere with plenty of room, and laying out each piece to ensure that everything had been included (and to ensure that nothing had been damaged). Everything that was supposed to be included was there and intact.

Assembly:

Obviously, the console itself has to be assembled. The assembly wasn't difficult (as I am a 25 year old woman who did it by myself), but it is time consuming, taking about three hours to complete (although I took my time). The hardware didn't seem cheap to me and every major piece is fit with several wood dowels to help guide the pieces together perfectly. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND FOLLOWING THE INSTRUCTIONS TO THE LETTER AND TAKING YOUR TIME!!! The pieces are designed to go together in a very specific order and once they have been locked together, it is almost impossible to take them apart again. This means that if you forget a step, you could be in big trouble. The instructions aren't super descriptive so read a couple of times to make sure you understand what you are doing. There is an optional support piece that is supposed to go in the middle of the shelf to help prevent the top piece from bowing if you have a somewhat heavy tv. I would recommend putting it in during assembly if you have a tv any larger than about 36 inches as I have already seen one review where the person didn't use the support piece, and his did bow under the weight of his tv. Once it was completed, I was however pleasantly surprised by how sturdy the unit was once it was constructed.

Product Review:

I did want to mention that the firebox itself isn't as deep as the cabinet is. This makes for a nice place in the back of the unit to put your power strip for all of your electronics so that you can place the cabinet flush against the wall without leaving an unsightly gap between the unit and the wall. It was a pleasant surprise. As I mentioned before, most of the main pieces of the unit are real stained wood and those that are not are still stained well to match the real wood pieces. Occasionally I go over the entertainment stand with wood polish, which brings out the nice espresso color in the wood. The unit itself is a beautiful, uniform color and is very sturdy considering that it was assembled. I love the cabinet space and width of the unit.

If you want a fireplace that looks like real fire, get a real fireplace. I spent a lot of time looking at these when I was shopping around and contrary to a couple of the reviews, I think the fire looks better than many of the electric fireplaces that I have seen (including several nice hotels that I have stayed at). I'm sure that they do make more realistic electric fireplaces, but you won't find any around this price, I've looked. The fire consists of varying shades of yellow and orange, but to me, the movement of the flames is about as as realistic as any I've seen. The brightness of the logs can be adjusted as well as the brightness/level of the fire, which is nice when you want the fire to seem low or when you are trying to watch a movie on the tv and you don't want the brightness of the fireplace to be distracting. I have a fairly small living room, so I can feel the heat from the heater on the couch when it is at medium setting, but I could see where it probably wouldn't heat a larger room by itself. In my case however, the space heater in the unit adds a nice warmth to the room (sometimes too warm). The remote control allows you to change the brightness of the logs and the fire, and to turn the heater off or on, but the thermostat for the heater must be adjusted on the firebox itself.

After three months of having this product, I must say that I am in love with it. With all of the features, I really feel like I got lots of "bang for the buck". It adds a very welcoming glow and warmth to my living room and I get compliments on it every time I have company. For the price, definitely five stars.

The only con I have is the flame is only amber. I could not really tell it was amber only in the picture. Come on guys...couldn't you have put a little red in there to mix up the colors?! It is obvious it is not a real flame...which is what I want...but the amber only color makes it a little less comfy when lit.

If you have seen fireboxes in stores and thought they looked good, dont buy this one. The firebox is no where near what you will see in stores. This is not a good Dimplex type firebox that you might get otherwise. It looks terrible. The logs look bad, doesnt resemble a fire much at all, you dont see flames, just weird glowing light. The dimplex insert is soo much nicer and this is not that. The furniture part is nice, but the firebox is horrible. Also the motor in the firebox makes a loud annoying sound and causes vibrations in the unit. Not Recommended.

The console arrived in two boxes. One (console)weighing in at 98lbs., and the second (fire box) weighing in at 38lbs. The console arrived completely in pieces with all screws and parts necessary to put it together. The instructions I would not rate for a beginner as they are not well displayed. It took six hours to put the console together but everything was there and the wood was not fiber board stuff you commonly find at IKEA. Once put together it is a very solid piece of furniture, but I was concerned when I saw the IKEA type screws to hold certain sections of the wood together. The firebox is all one piece and slides in to the finished assembled console with a wood block and screws to keep it in place. I found this to still keep the firebox loose and added two small wood screws up against the back of the firebox to help keep it more snug. Once it was all setup with my television components I plugged in the fireplace and turned it on. The heat unit works great and will nicely supplement the heat in the winter for this one bedroom apartment in Portland, Oregon. The flame and log functions all work great although I was disappointed that the logs didn't better resemble more red coals burning around the logs with instead being the same colors as the flame (yellow/orange). It was not worth taking the whole thing apart to send it back, but a better close-up picture of the flame and logs would be great for future purchasers. Overall I am pleased with the size and dimensions of this console/fireplace. However, next time I pay this kind of price for something like this I will buy one assembled and working before I make the purchase. I give this product a four star rating because of the wood, glass in the doors, and the solid construction after it was assembled.

We received this yesterday and put it together in a few hours. I expected the quality to be a bit better for the price, but all the same it looks great. We had looked at the Espresso model but opted for this lighter color so glad we did. Some reviewers on the espresso model stated that they were unhappy with the flame because there wasn't enough color variation, but we are very happy with it. We have wanted an electric fireplace for a long time, since we can't have the real thing. This would probably warm up our bedroom if it were in that room with the door closed, but we have this in our living room near a stairway and kitchen so we didn't notice a big difference in the overall warmth of the room. However, we have only had it for one day. Standing in front of it with the heat on high, it definitely puts out good heat though so we'll see after extended use how that goes. Would definitely recommend

The Cyclone 2000 is the smallest of the Port-A-Cool (PAC) product line, and clearly it's the design and convenience that warrants their rather high purchase price and not because of any generous amount of high grade hardware being used for its assembly. I'll elaborate on that later but first, regardless of how these PACs are advertised, they are still swamp coolers and serve well in drier climates by whisking cool evaporated water into the air, and since I live in the dry, dry desert and have access to every PAC model in production, these are definitely better than the average evaporative coolers. They are swamp coolers on steroids, ranging from this smallest unit all the way up to the new mega-buck and hair raising Hurricane! So anything with the Port-A-Cool label on it is going to have superior cooling when compared to the less expensive KuulAire products. But be sure of what you are about to purchase because you can save a few hundred dollars if one of the smaller units is adequate and you don't really need the high volume of air flow that are common to these PACs. I never heard of anyone cooling the outside air before until becoming familiar with these units, and it is true. They will keep you cool, and people just love to keep one of the smaller PAC units pointed in their direction all the time while they are working either inside or outside.

I received my Cyclone 2000 several months before actually putting it into service. Upon finally removing it from its shipping box and hooking up power and a water hose, it wouldn't work, but I could hear a distinct hum from the motor. I pulled it completely apart and discovered a bent motor mount was causing the squirrel cage to rub up against its housing. Pulled it apart and straightened everything out the way it is supposed to be when shipped from the factory, and now it runs perfectly. My only disappointment was the use of cheap self-drilling metal screws to hold everything in position which only serves to speed up production, but what the end user finds out is that every screw eventually strips out and doesn't hold. Every one of them needs to be replaced with nuts and bolts, and the designers at Port-A-Cool should know better. Don't be cheap with a good product and test these coolers for proper operation before sending them out!

I'm using it in a 680 sq-ft garage/shop which is larger than recommended for the Cyclone 2000. I leave the garage door open about 2 ft so it pulls in outside air.

The temp drop is dramatic. When it's 100F outside the air coming from the portacool is in the high 70's. I'm in Dallas, TX, so the air is fairly low humidity which is essential for making this type of cooler work. Since the unit is really too small for the space, I have to direct it towards the space that I work in but I don't consider that an issue. I've found that it isn't very good at cooling off a space that is already hot. If I wait until the afternoon and turn it on, it will help but it will still be hot in the shop. Best way to use it is to turn it on in the morning and let it run all day. If I do that, the shop is very livable even in the afternoon.

So in summary: It is not an air conditioner. As long as it is used for what it was designed for it's very effective and can keep a space livable, though not 100% comfortable, even on a hot day. And it will do it at a fraction of the running cost of AC. I don't hesitate to let this unit run all day as it only uses a couple of amps on 115V (very low electricity use compared to an AC unit).

Delivering mail in my postal vehicle in the summertime in Florida gets kinda warm...can you spell H-A-D-E-S? The little fan that is installed in our trucks doesn't provide much relief and has limited range so for years I've been buying the clip-on fans sold at Wally World only to have each and every one blow a fuse or break within a month or so. The specified fuses on these junkers are impossible to find and replacements that were recommended at Radio Shack would blow almost immediately. But those fans were the only ones I could find locally so this year I decided to try something else and ordered this Tornado Fan and so far (about a month) I'm very happy with it. YES it is loud at high speed but the postal vehicle's built in fan is very loud as well so thats a wash as far as I'm concerned. The variable speed on the Tornado fan means you can adjust it to your liking and quickly turn it down to a relative whisper when you need to. There is a non-adjustable version of this fan but for a couple extra bucks in my opinion you get much more usability with that variable speed. If you listen to the radio in your vehicle the noise may be too much but if you're just working and driving and humming your own tunes this fan will help you be more comfortable.

This fan is very efficient and powerful, but makes a loud sound like a hair dryer or vacuum cleaner. I am a trucker so the sound doesn't bother me, but my friends hate it.

This fan is very popular with truck drivers who need to defrost their windshield in super icy conditions (turn heater on full blast, blow heat from dash/upper vents all over windshield, roll windows to regulate)

Love love love love and love this thing. Fortunately I was able to buy it a few years back when it was in the $130-140 range. I've taken it on no less than 20 camping trips and although it is bulky, I wouldn't trade it's heat output for anything.

A few things I LOVE about it it's got 3 seperate settings. I bought a Big Buddy (4k-9k BTU) heater and hated it because the 4k wouldn't get the tent hot enough, then the 18k would scorch the place. I would have to wake up 15x's to adjust it back and forth. This one has a 3rd option, which I use regularly.

Also I can use 1 or 2 propane canisters OR a BBQ tank/hose, which I usually have camping anyway. Love that option! It's a little finicky to ignite at times, but once it ignites, it's lights out baby. It also has a fan thats operated by 6D batteries, but I don't think I've ever had the need to use that.

My wife teaches dance in the garage and in the winter the temp gets down in the 30's-40's. This little heater will heat up the garage (about 500 sq ft) in about 20 minutes on high. Then she'll back it down to low or medium for confort.

Did I mention I love this thing? Aside from the bulkiness of it, it's been a life saver and very dependable. Easily one of my top 3 favorite camping items I own.

I purchased this unit in May 2012. I used it to cool my apartment for almost four months. I started using the unit's supplemental heating feature in September 2012. At that time, I noticed that whenever the temperatures outside plunged BELOW 45 degrees Fahrenheit, a BURNING SMELL would come from the unit while operating in the supplemental heat mode... and when that happens, the unit provides little to no heat whatsoever! This unit is NOT a STRAIGHT ELECTRIC heating unit, but is instead a HEAT PUMP heating unit, which means that the outside temperatures must be 45 degrees Fahrenheit OR HIGHER in order for this unit's heating feature to operate. Love this unit, should not be used for only heating source as in the dead of winter it will not warm. we have 8 of these in a small seasonal motel and have had zero issue with them and the operating ambient temp of 40 degrees and it keep the rooms warm enough. BACKGROUND

Traditional heat/cool ACs are specialty appliances, like window ACs that are short or narrow. They're installed where a single appliance does both summer and winter duty (think motel). Usually 220v, they produce ample heat and have ample power bills to go with them. This is because they operate like giant space heaters with resistance coils. But in a world of ever increasing energy costs, there's a better way. Its called a heat pump. Window heat pumps are rare and 120v heat pumps even more so. This is the only one made by Frigidaire and only one other company also makes only one.

THEORY

Normally the purview of expensive mini split systems, heat pumps make heat out of thin air, using much less energy than other methods of electric heat. Most window ACs on the market only make cold. This takes heat on the inside and moves it outside. Heat pumps have the ability to run in reverse. They capture heat on the outside and move it inside. Why is this useful? Because moving heat is way more efficient than making heat. This window unit can generate 3 times more BTU per watt than a space heater. Simply put, if half your winter power bill is currently making heat with space and baseboard heaters, this will cut your power bill by more than one quarter.

LOCATION

But, as other reviews indicate, this process is only effective when the outside temperature is above freezing. This model works great in the southeast, south, southwest, and northwest, where winter temperatures rarely go below 40. This model is a poor choice for the northeast and other climates with regular snow fall.

INSTALLATION

The only issue I have with this model is its size. Its 85lbs and closer in size to 12-18k (medium) window units. This reduces vibration and makes it quieter but also limits the number of places it can be installed. The smallest size you should consider is 23 inches across and that requires not using the side skirts (just get extra foam strips). Fortunately, the sleeve system reduces installation difficulty (not having to hold it while getting the bits in place) and allows for both window and through-the-wall installation. Just make sure to wear gloves when moving the inner sled.

USE

Its a little counterintuitive, how a machine with big moving parts can use less energy than a tiny little heater. But thats how much power a glowing red coil uses. This unit really does take less power than a hair dryer. It also solves that annoying burn smell so common with electric heating. It also solved my moisture problems, eliminating the need for the space/cost/power of a separate dehumidifier. Just plan for condensate: winter heating in the humid PNW, it drips more than an AC in the summer. And of course, when summer hits, no second appliance needed just change modes!

I bought one for the office and liked it so much I bought a second for the house. With enough insulation in your windows/walls and combined with an air circulator (fan or air cleaner), it can handle multiple rooms. Heating my small kitchen, living, dining, hall, and two bedrooms with a single unit, it does need an hour or two head start in the morning, but thats what the timer is for.

POWER

This 120v model can easily operate on an empty circuit. It should not be on the same circuit as other heavy appliances. This model actually has 3 systems/modes, with 3 BTU ratings and 3 wattage levels:

Cool: 8000 BTU @ 815 watts

Heat Pump: 7000 BTU @ 780 watts

Heat Strip: 3500 BTU @ 1290 watts

The middle one is the point of this appliance. The heat strip is a kind of insurance, coming on automatically when the heat pump cannot (but using more power while giving you less heat). Such as when its to cold outside or the compressor was recently cycled. Like old fashioned resistance heaters, if the heat strip hasn't been operated in a while, it will make a burning smell. This is normal and should 'burn off'.

NOTES

Window ACs only have one power level, the BTU rating of the compressor. The compressor runs at a constant rate until a target temp is reached and then cycles off. Low/medium/high only effects the fan speed. The higher the fan speed, the more diffused the total cool/heat output will be and the less cool/hot the air coming out will feel. Higher fan speeds cool/heat better when the extra air flow better distributes the cool/heat generated by the compressor. If you need more cold/heat than medium provides, you need more BTU (a bigger unit), an air circulator, or both.

Air circulators (like the Air King 9214) are handy window AC companions. Placed nearby, they dramatically increase the reach of wall/window units and with AC and fan on low, are also quieter. Cold gets removed from the area near the AC, allowing it to run longer and cool more. Meanwhile, areas further away get colder sooner and stay cooler longer (replace cooler with warmer for winter operation).

Sleep mode does the opposite of the set mode, cooler in the winter and warmer in the summer. If you prefer sleeping cooler both seasons, just press sleep in morning when using cool mode.

Heat mode operates like cool mode when energy saver is on. Cycling off/on to check the room's temp.

This model does not have the loud beep found on other late model Frigidaires.

Most negative window AC reviews are because of shipping problems. Consider ordering "shipped to store", so you can inspect the box before accepting it and won't have to handle the return if there's an issue.

Because the digital sister model SLP3310 would not work with a timer, I returned the 3310 to the big box store where I bought it and bought on-line 2 of the SLP3300 for $60 each & free shipping. The 3300 is analog, with 2 rotary dials. The 3300 will come back on after a power outage, and it will work with a 3-prong, 1875 watt timer. I use the 'low' heat setting with the thermostat on a modest setting, in a 12 x 14 foot room with 8 foot ceilings, and it keeps my (well insulated) bedroom very, very comfortable. Although Sunbeam has a lousy reputation in electric blankets, this 3300 heater appears well made. Note, the 'high' setting could burn paint off a wall if positioned too close.

I bought one of these a little over a year ago. I didn't use it that much, but after the warranty (1 yr.) ran out, it stopped working. They sent out another one (to Sunbeam's credit), but it worked for about 8-10 hours then stopped. This is an example of too much tech for a simple product.

I took it apart to see if I could wire it back together and bypass the electronics. This one had already been worked on. The solder joint for the power cord was loose from the circuit board.

Threw it away and bought some Pelonis oil-filled space heaters. Rock solid.

We tend to keep our central heating set pretty low (65 during the day, 61 overnight), but we have a newborn so we wanted to keep one of the rooms really warm. This unit does a good job of keeping a 14x12 ft. room warm during the day and overnight. As the other reviews say, it doesn't heat up a cold room very quickly, but it does a good job of maintaining a temperature once it get to its target temp.

pro: it seems to do a good job maintaing a temperature once you figure out the right dial positions. It doesn't keep swinging between too cold and too hot.

1. No temperature degrees markings I'd really prefer to be able to turn the dial to 70 degrees and know that it'll shut off at 70. The way it is now, I had to turn the dial all the way up, wait for the room to get too hot, turn it down a little, then a little more, etc. until it finally kept the room at a comfortable temperature.

2. Timer it'd be nice if it had a built in timer so it would turn on/off at preset times. Right now we just have to switch it off and then *hope* we remember to switch it on a few hours before we want the room to be warm.

Really beautiful high quality dark cherry (and heavy) furniture which enhances the room even when not turned on. The flames are surprisingly much more realistic than I expected but the glowing coals in front appear to lack depth and consequently realism. Heater works well to add secondary heat to a medium sized room but fan can be a bit noisy.

The remote control is very small and works only when it wants to.

Assembly took an hour or so. Assembly Instructions understandable (and also available on line). Ships in two boxes; one for the mantel (this is the part that must be assembled) and one for the electric flame/heater box.
