This is about Tool King as well as the CZ707 Heater. I have had excellent and very prompt service from these people. When I ordered this heater it arrived very quickly, however there was exterior damage, so I phoned the company. They sent a replacement immediately, no questions asked, within a week I had a brand new heater.

The little heater works fine, as advertised. It is compact, a little cube and should be very safe since it won't topple over. It's compact & easy to handle. Heater has a very low setting so it can stay on for hours and keeps the bathroom comfortable. The thermostat works fine.

It really takes the chill off, heats quickly, & doesn't use much power to do it.

As far as I can tell there are no problems at all with this heater (I've only had this for a few weeks). Even better, I feel that if there was a problem Tool King would act promptly to correct it.

I have had this heater for a month now and I absolutely love it. I cannot believe how much heat this little heater provides. I have it under my desk at work and it is perfect to warm my feet on these cold mornings. The heater I had before this one would run all day but this one puts out so much heat, I can turn it off for part of the day. I would recommend this heater for anyone who wants under the desk heat. I do not know how it would work in a room but from the amount of heat it is putting out I would think it would do the job. I would buy this again should the need arise.

Best Deals for Comfort Zone® Personal Heater/Fan CZ707

I purchased this little heater to use at work for 2-3 hours every morning, and I've been using it for about six weeks now. I particularly like that it is small and portable. The heater is just slightly larger than those small square tissue boxes. I can put it on the floor or on the table. The handle on top makes it easy to move around, unlike the last heater I had which needed to be picked up from the bottom using two hands. I use it under my desk in a small office, and I rarely use the high setting since the low setting sufficiently warms my little corner. If I set the thermostat low, the heater will cycle off and on as needed, perfect for a mild day. The overheating sensor works as intended; when I briefly placed my laptop bag on the floor directly in front of the heater, the caution light came on and it shut off within two seconds. When this happens, turn off and unplug the heater for about 10 minutes so it can cool down. I like that it has a fan-only setting, handy when someone burns popcorn in the office microwave!

I have a few small negatives that account for my deduction of a star. Some of the gray paint bubbled up and is flaking off the back of the heater next to the power cord. The heater still has a bit of a burning smell for a minute after I turn it on in the morning. It isn't as quiet as some small heaters I've owned, but I do find that the consistent hum fades into the background when I get used to it after the first few minutes. If I sat in a cubicle with neighbors on all sides, this heater might be annoying to some.

I do recommend plugging it into a power strip that has a built-in circuit breaker. Twice now this heater has tripped the circuit breaker when I've had it on high heat for longer than 30 minutes (the only other thing plugged into the power strip is a small desk lamp.)

Overall the heater seems durable and I'm hoping it holds up well. I'll update this review if I encounter any issues.

Honest reviews on Comfort Zone® Personal Heater/Fan CZ707

This little item fits the bill perfectly. It is light weight, small, well-made, easy to move around, quiet and warm. I have yet to use the "high" setting, as it generates sufficient heat to keep my legs and feet warm under my desk, which is close to a cold (exterior) wall in the building.

I work in an office where the temperature is more often than not 69 degrees on a regular basis. I wanted to get a little space heater so that I wouldn't spend the entire day uncomfortable and having to wear a bulky jacket which still didn't warm me up. DEFINITELY worth the money! LOVE IT. Wouldn't want to be without it. It's warm enough to heat up a good amount of space and I don't have to wear a jacket anymore! :)

First thing is that the cord is only about 3 feet long. They tell you it has a nice long cord but it goes down the tube when you assemble it and there is about 3 feet left over. The area it heats is extremely small and if you want to use this on the patio at night forget about seeing anything outside. It lights the place up like crazy.

We've had the first one for a month, and have just ordered a second. So far, it has worked exceptionally well. Bought the first one after using an electric oil-filled radiator-type heater for a few years. They seem generally to work well, and they feel safer to me than standard space heaters that get red hot and seem poised to set fire to anything close. Our cats like to lounge close to these things, so safety is always an important consideration. We live in NYC and have steam radiator heat that seems to switch on and off randomly, so sometimes it gets seriously chilly in our apartment. One of these little HG-450 units does the trick for the bedroom, keeping things nice and warm. I've just ordered a second unit for the second bedroom, which I use as an office. Hopefully they won't explode right after I've submitted a glowing review... If not, though, these things are excellent.

When I saw this heater I wondered why it costs this much when there are other oil-filled heaters that cost $30-40 less. I zoomed in on the product shot and noticed there are more vents on the main fin where the control panel is. If more vents means more heat, then it'll be worth it. So I took a gamble and ordered one.

The heater would be used in the living room which is an open area with a 9" high ceiling. The heating system in the house is forced air with vents in the ceiling, and since warm air rises, warming the room below to a decent temperature is practically impossible and financially prohibitive, as I use electric heat. To add insult to injury, forced air heating blows out air that creates a cold wind when it comes on, so it's not only a huge waste of money, it's also very crude and just ridiculous.

A month ago I decided to heat the room solely with space heaters. I have an electric fireplace with a heater on the lowest setting, a baseboard heater I bought a week before (Fahrenheat Baseboard Heater #FBE15002), and an old oil-filled heater. It didn't get warm and barely raised the temperature and I was quite disappointed -until I got this heater. What a world of difference! The place becomes so toasty and temps keep rising, I even have to lower it! With this 3-heater combination, residual heat flows into the rest of the downstairs area, which includes kitchen, dining room, foyer, even the powder room.

There is one downside to this heater. The timer is not really programmable and limited to only 2, 4 and 8 hours, and when set on timer, it comes on at the highest setting. But the amount of heat it gives out well makes up for this slight inconvenience.

I highly recommend this heater and I'm getting another one for my bedroom, which is a big room and my older oil-filled heaters can't handle it.

We needed a silent heater to use at night while we sleep.

This heater is totally silent and keeps the room warm at night. Have no complaints at all.

The only two small downsides of this product is

1. Loud beep with each button press. Loud enough to be heard from other room.

2. Power lines are quite short at about 5ft. So I can't really drag it across the room without unplugging it first.

Honest reviews on NewAirAH-450 Electric Oil Filled Radiator Space Heater - Heats 225

Bought this oil heater for my 88 yr old mother who moved from sunny/warm Florida to the much colder clime of Kansas. It is quiet and truly keeps her room toasty. The controls are easy for her to manage.

I was a bit skeptical when I first plugged this baby in because I'm used to heaters with fans and this one makes absolutely ZERO noise. After an hour or so I could feel the magic working on this heater and I am happy to say I am pleased with what it provides.

The space we are trying to heat up is approximately 300 sq ft with a 9 ft ceiling.

Pros: Easy assembly. Easy to operate. VERY quiet. Provides enough heat for my space (72 degrees is suitable for me). If the space we tried to heat were any bigger however, I think the heater would fall short.

Cons: Takes a LONG time to get the heat going. Lack of fan means distribution of heat takes a while before it takes effect. Heating panels are a bit too hot to keep my 10 month old son near it but not too hot to scald him in case his curious fingers get inside.

I had a smaller filter on my house which is on a water well. My well has a fair amount of sand and rust and with the smaller filter and I was having to change the filter a lot. It was a pain. I figured that if I had a larger filter, the filter change intervals would be longer and life would be better.

I ended up buying this. The big blue filter media is about 4x the mass of my older filter, which means the filter could theoretically last 4x as long. I haven't had to change my filter yet so I can't say with certainty if this is true, but I don't see why it wouldn't be.

It was easy to plumb this into my water supply. I have PVC pipes and just turned off my pump and cut my old PVC pipes out and put in new. Warning: this housing uses 1" PVC pipes. Yes, I know it says it in the specs but make sure you know what size your pipes are. Mine were 3/4" and I wasn't aware of that. Fixed it with some 1" to 3/4" PVC adapters.

Why did I only give it four stars? Well, this filter housing uses the standard 4x10" filter size. That's good. Then I found out they make 4x20" filters and housings. You can buy a new bottom (the part that screws on) and the longer filters and then you'll have double the filter. If I had known that, I would have gone that route. I can't just change the bottom on mine because the way I mounted it and ran my PVC pipes, there isn't room for the extra 10" below it. If I had known, I would have mounted it higher and routed the pipes differently just in case I wanted the longer filters.

Also, there is a metal bracket made by Culligan that is great for mounting this. Amazon sells it for about $15. Worth it.

I've been using this for about a year and a half and it works fine. I'm using the Culligan RFC-BBS Level 4 Heavy Duty Sediment Replacement Cartridge which I may change to a lesser model since my problem is the deep well (365') picking up a little sand and clogging my water softener and faucets after a few months and this product fixes that problem. I change the filter about every 3 months. Over all I'm very satisfied with the filter and despite the high prices of the filter cartridges I still rate this as a 5.

NOTE: All my pipes are copper so I did put a wire jumper across the filter housing to maintain grounding throughout the house. The house is grounded using a steel rod driven about 18' deep. Other than the safety issue a lack of a good ground can cause audio humming or other interference.

Installation isn't easy. Would prefer metal screw holes and would have liked a bypass valve. However, once installed, it works as advertised. Built of heavy plastic, seems sturdy enough. Needs support either by the extra bracket or something under it -with spacing to allow filter change.

Would have like to had the physical measurements before purchase.

Good value. I would recommend it to others.

Honest reviews on Culligan HD-950A 1-Inch Outlet/Inlet Heavy Duty Sediment Water

I didn't realize how much dirt and sediment came thru our water line. Thia has trapped a lot of "STUFF" from the family ingesting and from settling in the water heater and screens in the faucets.

I had first got the ge filter of the same size the 35 or 40 model. They both take the same size filters. Definitely get this one! The GE one will give you water hammer because of the supposedly convenient shut-off/bypass valve. This culligan one doesn't have that valve, so it works. The only downside is that the ones I saw do not come with a mounting bracket. The bracket from my GE one fits, as does the CLEAR filter basket. I wish they came this way, but at least it will work without giving you water hammer. Just make sure you put shut off valves on both sides of the filter, and attatch a ground wire from one side to the other to maintain your house ground.

Compact, quiet, clean heat. The oscillating feature is very nice. I would have rated it 5 stars but for one thing: it has a temp setting and supposedly a thermostat so the unit can be set from 65 to 85 degrees in 5 degree increments. It flat doesn't work. I can set it for 65 degrees and it will just keep putting out heat until the room is 80 degrees. Called Bionaire and they told me it's defective. They offered to replace it for free which is nice, but "not until September. Heater season is over. Call us back in September."

It does heat the room, but the thermostat isn't reliable. Not only inaccurate, it also stops functioning entirely if left on one settings for too long. We bought a different heater and this is now our backup.

Discount Char-Broil SureFire Electric Charcoal Starter

Char-Broil SureFire Electric Charcoal Starter
Customer Ratings: 4.5 stars

There is no easier, more hassle-free way to start a charcoal fire than by using one of these. As long as you have access to an electric outlet somewhere in the vicinity of your grill, you'd be foolish to use any other method.

You place the heating element on the grate, with the plastic handle resting on the barbecue's edge. Cover the element with your briquettes, plug it in, wait 12 minutes, and then remove it. By that time, any charcoals that were in contact with the red-hot element will have started. Mound up the coals, wait a few more minutes, and you're good to go. No smelly, dangerous lighter fluids, no chimneys, no newspapers. What could be more simple?

The electric cord is quite short, so if your outlet isn't close by you'll have to use an extension cord. Just make sure it is a heavy duty one like the kind used for power tools.

It's quite durable if used correctly. I bought the one I have now 6 or 7 years ago and I use it at least 30 or so times a year. The heating element is beginning to crack now, so it will fail soon, but 200+ uses for this inexpensive item is pretty respectable, I think.

I can't understand why everyone doesn't use one of these. If you like to barbecue in your backyard or on your patio or deck, this is indispensable equipment.

This starter is wonderful. But don't get lazy and leave it under the charcoal, like I did. You need to remove it after the fire starts. The plastic near the cord melts and the thing is ruined. I am ordering another one because I find I don't want to start charcoal without one.

Best Deals for Char-Broil SureFire Electric Charcoal Starter

I have a Big Green Egg. And these are recommended to start the charcoal in them.

It does the job, flat out. I have only had it a few weeks, but it does indeed start the charcoal.

Quickly too! About 5-10 mins get the coals read hot!

I gave it 5 stars because this thing does exactly what it's supposed to do, start coal.

Now, for my commentary.

This thing makes me NERVOUS AS HELL.

I have kids, and they are goofy. This is basically every toaster/counter-top oven heating element in the world, with a plastic handle. Haha

So when you take this thing out of the coals, it is this red hot heating element. Where do you put it? It has to cool off for a few mins. On the table? Patio? Where out of the way, that someone isnt going to touch it?

I am not knocking the product, it is what it is, but think about this stuff before you buy it. I wouldnt want to see someone get hurt from this thing.

Honest reviews on Char-Broil SureFire Electric Charcoal Starter

this is the best charcoal starter we have ever used. the last one purchased is still working but is over ten years old and is used regularly every summer. I just purchased a new one as a back-up, but may not need it for a long time. Very reliable and very easy and safe to use.

In my area this is alot of wind(since i live close to the windy city chi) so everytime i get some kind of fire going the charcoal wont light. I tried the charcoal chimney and paid 15 bucks for it and it did nothing for me. So after trying for 2 hours to light using that dumb chimney I borrowed one of these wands from my mother and in 5 minutes the charcoal started smoking. This the best starter for a barbeque hands down.

Honest reviews on Broan Model 170 Wall Heater, 500/1000 Watt 120 VAC, White Painted

I chose this item because it was a drop in replacement for a wall heater that went bad . The original heater worked great for many years (had been in operation for at least 20 years), so I ordered one that I could install in the old enclosure without having to do extensive remodeling. It fit perfectly! The only negative that I have is that it is a bit on the noisy side (somewhat more noisy than the original), but not unacceptable.

This is my third and fourth unit, I have one at home, one at the office and two for our cabin. We love them!

Click Here For Most Helpful Customer Reviews >>

I usually buy based upon a sizable number of four or five star reviews for an item, while looking at and evaluating the lower reviews for possible problems. This unit had one raving review, but I researched outside of Amazon and saw all good things.

The unit heats with great strength. Within 5 and even 10 feet you can feel it directly. The 80° oscillating factor is nice and it doesn't have a fan, which keeps it virtually silent in operation, a little vibration at first but that ceased after it warmed up. I found running my ceiling fans in downward clockwise direction improved heat circulation but no necessary. Controls are independent and simple on the top of the unit. The timer can be set to high or low and in 1/2-1-2-4 hr intervals, or stay on constant. It has an over turn and over heat sensor to shut off. Cord is about 6ft long. The instructions recommend not attaching extension cord for potential overheating or blowing a circuit, although I imagine this as a legal disclaimer.

Overall, very pleased. I can see why the first reviewer purchased additional units. I may do the same to have one main living area and for additional rooms or outside. It definitely cuts down on central heating expenses. Great ambient warmth.

Koolatron 18 qt. Compact Cooler Review

Koolatron Compact Kooler

We bought the Koolatron Kooler a year ago and find it very useful to keep food and drinks cool while traveling.

To use this effectively both the cooler and the items to be placed in it should be cool to begin with. The empty unit will cool about 10 degrees an hour to about 40 degrees lower than the ambient temperature around it, and maintain it's pre-cooled contents at that temperature as long as it powered on. Warm items placed in a warm cooler take much longer to cool, (the manual says up to 12 hours or longer).

We purchased the optional AC power adapter, so the night before we leave on a trip we plug the unit in and pre-cool it. The morning we are leaving we load it with a few soda and water bottles that have been cooled in the refrigerator. We also put in 2-4 plastic food containers that have been chilled in the refrigerator. One or more of those we fill with ice. The more space that is filled with cool/cold items the better the cooling process for everything else (less infiltration of warm air every time the unit is opened, less warm air to cool).

On our trip we then have cool soda and water to drink, and ice to use with the soda in a cup kept in the cup holder. If we add a room temperature soda or bottle of water the presence of the other cool/cold items filling the rest of the unit together with the action of the unit will cool that within an hour or two.

The plastic boxes are mostly for use with "doggie bag" contents from restaurant meals. Assuming an ambient temperature around the unit of 75 degrees, if the other contents were already cooled to the 35 degree temperature produced by the 40 degree cooling capacity of the unit, a room temperature container of food will be below 45-50 degrees within a couple of hours . We usually have dinner left overs for lunch the next day, certainly within two days.

The unit fits nicely in our sedan behind the drivers seat (assuming there is no passenger in the back seat that needs that leg room) and is easily reached from the front passenger seat over the console between the bucket seats.

At night we take the unit into our motel room and plug it in with the optional AC power adapter. The unit cannot be left plugged in to the cigarette lighter in the car for more than 4 hours or it will run the car battery down.

There is an optional battery saver adapter that will shut off the unit if it overtaxes the car battery. (Buying that is the reason I have returned to this item on Amazon a year later.) That will allow us to leave the unit plugged in when we leave the car for an indeterminant period of time that could be more than 3-4 hours. But after 4 hours or so the unit will shut off to protect the car battery and the contents will start to warm. So, if it is in a warm place we still can't be gone much longer than 4-5 hours if we want to keep food edible.

Finally, I keep an ordinary indoor/outdoor thermometer in the unit so that I can tell what the temperature in the unit is and am comfortable that food has not been subjected to temperatures that would make it unsafe to eat. (I think the manufacturer should build that in to the unit.)

Click Here For Most Helpful Customer Reviews >>

We were very sorry that this item broke down for us even after we returned the first and then tried a brand-new second one. We purchased the first in June for a 3-week road trip in July. We also purchased the AC adapter, especially given that the manufacturer recommends when you're on the road to keep the unit going at night with the adapter so it remains cool. The first two weeks, it was fine. Then it all of a sudden, with no warning, stopped working. Whether using the cigarette lighter outlet in the car or the AC adapter it was dead. We returned it to Amazon when we got home and they were wonderful about sending us a new one to replace it very quickly. Then we went for a 3-day trip with the new one over Labor Day. This time the new one lasted maybe 10 hours on the first day and also died. Amazon allowed us under the circumstances to return both cooler and AC adapter (minus 20% which I can't kick too much about). However, our experience leads me to question whether Amazon should continue to carry this "product." We followed all the instructions and did not abuse it in any way and it was definitely very nice WHILE it worked. Sorry to be so negative but I'm sure you want the truth before you lay out this kind of money for something that can so easily and consistently stop working.

Best Deals for Koolatron 18 qt. Compact Cooler

After going through a bad experience with trying to buy and then (in some cases) buying first a Vector, then a RubberMaid, then a Wagan Tech, and now a Koolatron, I can tell you that it's a relief to find a well-designed, well-built DC-powered cooler/warmer that actually works! Our Canadian neighbors to the north have done a great job with this unit.

I worried about its 17" height and depth, but once it was decided that it was going to live behind the passenger's front seat, those concerns became non-issues. In fact, its height is a benefit as long as it doesn't interfere with the seat back when you lift the lid, as you can reach right in from the driver's seat and get a can or a sandwich without much effort if you pack it well.

I also worried about all the ads that portrayed it as being only a cooler. But after having so much trouble with other companies' cooler/warmers, I decided to forget warming and bought the Koolatron without it (or so I thought). So when the unit arrived--in its original box, no less--I was pleased and surprised to see that it warms too! Excellent combination, since I have consumer-issue MRE's that I can now warm in it while I use my clumsier (and larger) Igloo Cool-Mate unit to cool other things down. And when I'm not doing that (like when the world ends or Limerick blows up), I can use it in the car as a cooler as I originally planned--an ideal situation.

If you need cooling in the car--or in an emergency situation (such as a power outage)--for medicines or for food, don't hesitate to buy this unit. In my opinion, it's by far the best one out there for its size and price, and I've seen or tried almost all of them.

Honest reviews on Koolatron 18 qt. Compact Cooler

I ordered, as a package, both the P20 Cooler, along with the Koolatron Muti-Purpose Adapter 110VAC to 12VDC, March 10, 1907 I checked to see both item were in stock, both were.

The Cooler arrived promptly on March 16, 2007. However, the 110VAC Adapter was back-ordered. With the Adapter on back-order, there was no way to check the Cooler's function. There was no way to pre-cool the unit, since the recommended time was about 12 hours, and it is not to be powered by vehicle battery for longer than 4 hours without the engine running. Furthermore there was no way to keep the contents cool at night while in the motel room, unless one wanted to let the engine run all night. So for the first 2 months the Cooler was useless!

The Adapter finally arrived on May 10, 2007, a full two months after the original order was placed. (This slow delivery is the reason for the 4-stars.) With the Adapter it was finally possible to test out the unit.

The unit was completely empty, outside air temp. was about 80 degrees. I was impressed by the cool-down time; a little over an hour to reach 40 degrees. Certainly the unit was not pre-cooled enough to fill with food, but the fact that it reached 40 degrees so quickly was encouraging. The adapter is somewhat cumbersome, but is easy enough to use and connect.

I have used the unit on several trips and have found it quite adequate, provided items are cold when they are introduced to it. Warm items take forever to cool down; twelve hours is not usually long enough. While the product may be cool-er it certainly is not cold. Extra frozen ice packs and/or freezer containers filled with frozen water help a great deal. They add extra cold air to the inside of the unit while frozen. Even thawed, they are still maintained at about 40 degrees. They fill up empty space within the unit, a REAL Killer: Each time the unit opens any empty space fills with warm air. This unit, being a top-loader, is a little better than others that are front-loaders. Since cold air tends to sink, more cold air stays in the unit when opened. Front-loaders spill ALL their cold air as soon as the door opens.

The unit is well constructed, and seems to perform quite well within its design capabilities. A few things to remember:

1. The unit is a COLD PRESERVER, NOT a REFRIGERATOR. Put it in cold it will come out warmer but still cold. Put in warm? Well, let's hope it is canned when you put it in.

2. The unit is a small heat-pump, (removing heat from the air to cool the inside of the unit) and it will do just that no matter what the outside air temp. is. This unit cools to 40 degree below the outside air temp. and if it is 32 degrees outside, it will cool to 40 degree BELOW that.

There is no thermostatic control, while it is plugged in, it is cooling.

The unit is insulated, but not real well, so it does no better job keeping cold out, than it does keeping it in. Water still freezes at 32 degrees, F. Transporting the filled unit in a trunk or other unheated space, in cold weather, is not the best idea. If you do, a least unplug it! If you are transporting medication which must be refrigerated, but not frozen, keep the unit in a heated area, so the unit can cool properly.

3. A small indoor/outdoor thermometer is a great idea. They are reasonable in price. They allow you to monitor both inside and outside temp. without opening the lid. Small units can be mounted outside on the top or side with double-stick tape, with the outdoor sensor inside. Ideally this would have been installed by the manufacturer, but it is a simple fix.

Perhaps Koolatron has improved their product, because unlike other postings, my cooler cooled down in several hours, not 12. My only complaint is a little too noisy, but that is a small price to pay for a reliable product. Also, I do recommend the ac adaptor. My unit is in my room now, buzzing away, keeping stuff cold. I called the company and was told that I can run it forever, there is no shutoff needed.

One minor point: with this item, you must be careful to align the arrow on the electric cord on the unit with the blue button on the extention, for cold. I did not do that and got heat for a couple of hours until I checked it.

I purchased this fireplace back in 2009 and only now have decided to write a review. As I am writing this review, I am watching the reflections of the flames in the window as the rain falls outside. The fireplace does work well. I can get about a 45 minute burn with the fire pits at 2/3 full.

As mentioned in the package instructions, the fireplace can generate a fair amount of heat up to at least three feet in front and above. After all, it burns real fire. :) I put the fireplace on a drywall in my bedroom. When I use the fireplace, I take down the wall decor hanging above the fireplace.

The molly bolts supplied with fireplace did not work properly on my drywall (I am not much of handyman. You may have better luck.) I had to buy another set Walldog 1.25 " screw and anchor bolts to properly attach the mountings to the drywall.

The fireplace surface also scratches easily. So, be careful when handling it.

If you live in an apt and yearn for a cozy fire once in a while ,this is for you. Oh yes the christmas flareup of 2010...

Relative to comparable alcohol burning fireplaces, this one is an absolute steal. Ours arrived promptly, in great shape. It's beautifully finished as well. Also, given the product's relatively light weight, it can even be mounted on a movable platform. For example, I plan to mount it on the face of a pullout section of a wall that will contain our home theater system components.

The product's instructions do indicate that, while it can be mounted on plasterboard or wallpapered walls, it should be kept four feet away from flammables -draperies and the like. So I'm not certain whether it would be safe to mount it on a plywood-paneled partition, or whether it would be safe to hang an acrylic-covered framed print above it.

I've passed along these questions to the folks at Devon LLC who market the product, so hopefully we shall soon see. They were kind enough to have a real live human being answer their phone who promised to have an informed party respond to my inquiry, so I have my fingers crossed...

I bought this fire place for my apartment since I remodel it and supreme the former fireplace (traditional one). When I mount it it really enhance the wall it is in,looks great, calls everyones attention, the design is simple but awsaome, it really gives an additional touch to my leaving room.

The fire looks good, it doesn't heat much, it is more a decorative element that brings style to any modern room than a heat source device.

In the digital age, we forget mechanical things do make noises. If you plan on installing this switch any where near bedrooms, you may hear the timer ticking down. It reminds me of an old school alarm clock. Anyway, this switch was easy to install and works great for the whole house fan. However, it's on the wall of the master bedroom and it is annoying trying to sleep. If you plan to use this away from sleeping areas, it's a fine count down timer switch.

The switch mechanism is large and would not fit in a 2 1/4 inch deep box with a wire connector on the side. Plan ahead.

(Sorry, it's now installed and it's too late for me to measure it. Why does Amazon not give accurate measurements? When they give measurements, it's often the size of the packaging.)

The mini switch plate works with a regular switch plate (standard or "rocker" type) which is not included.

Made in Tunisia!

The unit does not include a cover plate. I went to the local big box store, purchased one and then decided to use the original plate.

Other than that, it works as expected. As I recall......... the item description indicated...... no cover plate included. Don't be surprised, when it arrives without one.

Honest reviews on Intermatic FD12HHW 12-Hour Spring Loaded Wall Timer with Hold, White

When you turn it counterclockwise it turns on as advertised. But, when you return it to off, it stays off for a while, and then some time later, it turns back on. What a surprise. I've learned to live with it. Just have to turn it a little counter clockwise to stop it.

It works, for now... its not any louder than normal mechanical timers, i do notice it at night but im ok with a little noise to go to sleep to. Also this doesn't have a ground terminal, which i thought was interesting. I guess they figure you wont need one? Either way it works without, i'm just wondering if i'll ever get a shock out of this thing

I am reviewing the Frigidaire FRA086AT7 8,000 BTU Mini Compact Window Air Conditioner. I am giving this AC a good review, but will mention a few things I didn't like about it. All of the complaints are minor, except for one, which was a problem for me, but might not be for you. I'll start with the background information, then list the features, and then list the good points and bad points.

Background Information:

This is a great AC with many features, good looks, digital display, remote control, and it cools the room very well. I'm using it installed in a window for my bedroom. Mine is 8,000 BTUs, but Frigidaire has similar models with different BTUs. It only comes in White. Even though it is described as "Mini Compact," it appears very sturdy and well-made and isn't really that small. Installation was a breeze because the unit weighs only about 50 lbs. It comes with the AC unit, a window installation kit, a nice manual, foam that you can put between the windows, and self-adhesive weatherstripping to cover any openings. All hardware is included. You just need a Phillips screwdriver to install it and a drill if you want to screw the top of the unit into your window. It is Energy-Star Compliant. The warranty is ONE YEAR Full Coverage and FIVE YEARS for the AC compressor.

Features:

* It has a green LED digital display with membrane button controls. You press buttons to control the unit. There are no knobs. Membrane means that all the buttons are covered by hard plastic and you press the label on the plastic that covers the buttons underneath. Each button press emits a beep, but if you hold the temperature/timer button down, it scrolls faster and only beeps once.

* It has buttons for On-Off, Mode, Fan Speed, Temp/Timer Up, Temp/Timer Down, Timer, Sleep, Filter Reset, and Clean Air.

* The Green Digital display shows the Temperature and Timer. Normally, when the unit is on Cool or Econ, it shows the temperature you have set, like a thermostat. However, when the fan only is on, it shows the actual temperature in the room. When you are setting the Timer, it displays the count-down timer.

* It has green LEDs for the 3 modes, the 4 fan speeds, whether the digital display is showing Fahrenheit, Centigrade, or Timer, Timer On, Sleep On, Filter Reset On, Clean Air On, and Remote Sensing On.

* You turn the unit on and off and it remembers your last settings. You press Mode to select from Cool, Econ, or Fan Only. Econ is Economy Mode that cycles the AC compressor on and off, once it reaches the set temperature, to conserve energy.

* Fan Speeds are Low, Med, High, so you have 3 speeds for both the AC and fan. The AC also has Auto Fan, which regulates the fan speed automatically for you. It comes on full blast when you first turn it on, then gradually lowers the fan speed as it reaches your desired temperature.

* The Up and Down buttons are used to set the temperature on the digital display. You can set it from 60 degrees to 90 degrees and display it as either Fahrenheit or Centigrade. These buttons are also used to set the Timer.

* The Timer button allows you to program the unit to either turn on or shut off one time over a 24 hour period.

* The Sleep button raises the temperature you have set by 2 degrees, one half hour after you activate it, and then by another 2 degrees, half an hour later. Then it keeps this temperature for the next 7 hours. It sounds more confusing than it is. Basically, you can activate the Sleep feature when you go to sleep. It assumes an 8-hour sleep cycle. So if you set the temperature for 72 degrees, then an hour after you go to sleep, it will be set for 76 degrees for the next 7 hours, and then go back to 72. The theory is that it you can fall asleep with the temperature you have set, and it can gradually get a bit warmer during the night, without it disturbing you, plus, it will prevent you from becoming too cold.

* Filter Reset has an LED that lights after every 250 hours of use. When it lights, it reminds you to clean the filter. After you clean it, you press the button to turn off the LED and reset it. Then it will remind you after the next 250 hours of use.

* Clean Air is a built-in Air Ionizer and Purifier. If you turn it on, it will automatically remove dust and impurities from the air while either the AC or fan is running.

* It has two separate air vent openings at the top that can be controlled independently.

* The enclosed remote (2 AAA batteries included) has an unlit LCD Display that shows the actual temperature at the remote, presumably that is where you are sitting. You can control everything from the remote, except the Filter Reset and the Clean Air Filter. A red LED blinks when you press a button. You can also turn Remote Sensing on and off from the remote. When it's on, a corresponding LED blinks on the AC unit to show it's activated. Normally, the unit controls the temperature, based on what the temperature is at the AC unit itself. When Remote Sensing is on, the unit then controls the temperature based on what the temperature is where the remote is located.

Good Points:

* Cools fast and extremely well.

* Very quiet.

* 6 foot long, 3-prong power cord, so you probably won't need an extension cord.

* Remembers your last settings, even if the unit is shut down due to a power failure.

* Auto Fan speed is very nice and is similar to digital climate control in a car, plus you have the other 3 manual fan speeds.

* Sleep feature is a nice touch to prevent you from getting too cold while sleeping.

* Reminds you when to clean the filter.

* Air ionizer is a good idea and makes you wonder, why didn't someone think of this before.

* Very attractive looking unit.

* Remote control adds a level of convenience, but it is the temperature display right on the remote that is an added bonus. Plus, having the unit control the temperature right where you are with the remote is very nice.

* Small and easy-to-remove air filter. It slides out from the top.

* Very energy efficient and the increase in my electric bill is much less than with other AC units I have owned.

Bad Points:

* Can't speak French. (Honeymooners' reference.) ;)

* It's slightly annoying that if the AC is on, you have to cycle it to Fan to display the actual temperature in the room, and then set it back to AC. There should have been a separate toggle button that would allow you to view either the temperature you set or the room temperature right on the AC unit itself. There is a temperature display on the remote, but when I am closer to the unit than the remote, I often use the unit to see what the temperature in the room is.

* The vent is always closed. It's the first AC unit that I've owned that strangely doesn't have a Vent Open and Vent Closed control. A number of my other ACs have Vent Open, Vent Closed, and Exhaust controls. It's not that big a deal, but with all of its other features, I wonder why this very basic control was left out.

* When you press a button on the unit, the beeps are very loud.

* For many people, the Timer feature will be a great thing, but I have been spoiled. The Frigidaire unit I am reviewing is replacing a Carrier AC that lasted me 21 years! The Carrier worked perfectly from 1988 until the end of summer 2009 and then it broke. I replaced it with this unit.

The Carrier was ahead of its time and it also had a timer. It was an analog timer, but it allowed you to turn the unit on or off, at hour intervals, as many times as you wanted over a 24 hour period. That might sound like overkill, but I would use it to turn the AC on one hour before I came home from work and then shut off 2 hours later, just in case there was some emergency and I didn't make it home right after work. Normally, I would come home, the room was nice and cool, and then I would turn the timer off. But just in case, I had the peace of mind knowing the AC would shut off in 2 hours, instead of staying on all night, if I didn't make it home.

You can't do that with the Frigidaire. You simply set a countdown timer and when it reaches zero, the unit will turn on, if it is off, or turn off, if it is on. Also, you have to set the timer every time you use it. With the Carrier, you could set the programmed times once, and then just turn the timer on when you wanted to activate it. Again, this is not that big of a deal and many people may not even use the Timer.

* The major drawback for me and the only thing that prevented me from giving the unit a 5-Star Rating was that the air-directional controls are absolutely horrible. I'm talking about the opening at the top of the unit where the air blows out from. I honestly can't understand how such a nice unit could be so deficient in this regard. They really missed the boat on this one.

All the ACs I've had over the years had very similar air-direction controls and they all worked great. Basically, they all had little handles, where you could rotate the vent flaps either left or right. Then there were also up/down flaps, where you could direct the air to blow upward. The bottom line is that you could control the direction of the air flow beautifully.

With the Frigidaire, they advertise it as 8-way air control. If you look at the picture you can see that you can control the left and right vents separately. So the left vent can be controlled left-right-up-down and that's 4 ways. Then the same for the right vent, makes 8 ways. Well, it sounds good on paper, but the vents simply do a bad job of controlling the direction of the air flow.

Each vent has a knob that you rotate to presumably control the left-right air flow. Then, you can also click each vent either up or down. Well, if you look at the picture you can see that a plastic rod with small plastic circles on it controls the left-right air flow. The problem is that these plastic circles don't go all the way to the top of the unit, so air ALWAYS blows straight ahead, no matter how you adjust the controls. If you adjust them full left and full right, some air will be directed left and right, but the majority of air will still blow straight ahead. To add insult to injury, the up/down controls are totally useless. They don't swivel, allowing you to position them at numerous up/down positions. There are only 2 positions. Straight ahead or you can click them up one notch, which raises them up about a quarter of an inch. They are useless because they only vary the up/down air flow by about 6 inches.

I made a big deal about this because I'm using it as a bedroom AC and it affects me when I'm sleeping. Truth be told, in most circumstances, the air-direction controls of an AC are not that big of a deal. If it's not used in a bedroom, or if it's installed high in a wall or even in a window that's not next to a bed, this should not create a problem for you.

However, as fate would have it, the unit is installed in a window located to the side of my bed. That's where the Carrier AC was installed and when I adjusted its vents, the air would blow upward and to the sides, so it NEVER blew directly on me while I was sleeping. With the Frigidaire unit, no matter what I try, the AC always blows directly on me while I am sleeping and I don't like that. So the bottom line is that this may not apply to you, but it's something you should be aware of. It's really quite annoying that I can't adjust this unit so it doesn't blow on me while I'm sleeping.

Conclusion:

This is a great unit and I highly recommend it, but with one reservation. You virtually cannot control the direction of air flow and it always blows straight ahead. Depending on your circumstances, this might not matter. However, if the unit will be installed in a window next to your bed or next to where you will be sitting, be aware that it will blow directly on you.

The best thing about this little AC unit is the "remote sensing" feature. It has a thermometer on the remote control and can use that as the input for the thermostat, set the remote in the middle of the room and it will keep it at an even temperature. It also has an "econo mode" setting and a "clean air" ionic air filter. It is small, relatively quiet, and the 8000 BTU's do a fantastic job keeping the place cool (it hardly ever runs in econo mode but still keeps it cold). This unit was only $10 more than the equivalent 6000 BTU Frigidaire unit.

Ok, I did my research before I bought this unit. It seems like the most bang for your buck. Amazon.com was VERY fast shipping this to me! I was shocked how fast.

The manufacturer claims that it uses only $59 of electricity a YEAR on average. We'll see. I haven't gotten the bill yet.

The unit has an ionizer and here's what I found about them:

"An air ionizer is a device that is intended to purify the air. As its name implies, instead of using fans and filters, an air ionizer creates ions which remove microscopic particles from the air. Rooms are healthier for those suffering from asthma, allergies, impaired immunity, or respiratory ailments, without as many allergens circulating in the lungs. Dust and mold collects inside heating and air conditioning ducts. Higher humidity inside allows bacteria to thrive. An air ionizer addresses these home and office sources of pollution and odor. The ozone that is created when negative ions are generated battles pollution by breaking it down into smaller, harmless components. Published research shows that high levels of negative ions are a useful treatment for Seasonal Affective Disorder."

Then again, a new study conducted by Consumer Reports indicates that ionizers also create ozone that isn't good for you. So who knows? I've been using it.

Pros

* Cools great! Cooled my whole apartment!

* Remote control

* Can use the remote for sensing the temperature instead (nice)

* Easy to install (took me an hour)

* Has an ionizer on it

* Lots of features

* I personally love the sound of the fan. It sounds a lot like a really nice box fan. I sleep like a baby and it downs out the noise from outside since I'm off a busy street. (people pay a lot of money for white noise machines!)

Cons (not enough to deduct a star though)

* No option to use vent to bring in outside air (on the bright side, bugs can't get in through the unit)

* On energy saver mode, it only checks the temperature every 10 minutes (it got up to 80 degrees in here in-between 10 minute checks)

* You'll need weather sealing tape for the side panels (so little bugs don't come in the sides and cold air gets out)

* Smelled a little metallic at first (I think it's the lubrication inside the unit)

Please note: You will probably want to weatherize the room (or your place) the unit is in. This is very easy to do (I put "high density foam tape" around the doors and "clear weather sealing tape" where air could come in around the unit) and makes a huge difference. If hot air is coming in and cold air is getting out, then no normal air conditioner is going to seem good enough. Plus, you lose a lot of money on wasted electricity. That's pretty common sense. If I can do it, anyone can.

CHECK WITH YOUR ELECTRIC COMPANY! I was eligible for a $30 dollar rebate on my electric bill for buying this "green" unit. Every little bit helps!

I found all the specifications before I bought the unit and thought I would share:

Honest reviews on Frigidaire FRA086AT7 8,000 BTU Window-Mounted Compact Air

I don't have a lot of experience with window a/c units, but this little guy seems to do alright. I moved to Brooklyn recently in the midst of mid-90s heat, into an apt with 0 a/c. Units were sold out all over town (except in overpriced specialty stores) so I had this unit rush delivered. The quality seems pretty good, given the relative low cost. I have this installed in my bedroom and it keeps the entire room chilly (68 F) on the lowest fan setting. Another plus is that I've not been bothered by any water dripping inside or out of the unit, which has been a problem of mine in other units.

The one negative I have is the loudness of the lowest setting. I wish there was another setting lower that was a bit quieter.

4 stars instead of 5 due to noise not terrible, but not the best available. Just purchased this unit from Lowes (slightly newer model remote control has been changed to the thin "credit card" sized remote control). About the same noise level as my 2-year old Kenmore 8000 Btu; not as quiet as my 20-year old Kenmore 8000 Btu (I have all 3 units installed and running in various rooms, so can compare). This unit is slightly cooler than the 2-year old unit, about the same as the 20-year old unit. Adjusting the directional vents on this unit is better than the older Kenmore, but still not great (no A/C I've seen has had good directional control). One annoying item for a bedroom installation: there is a really loud "beep" whenever you adjust anything. Would be really annoying to a partner if you adjusted the unit in the middle of the night.
