I am amazed at how efficiently this heater operates. We have it placed in our living room and run it on the low 400 watt setting for about an hour or two in the evening when the temps drop below 40 and it does a better job than our 1500 watt electric baseboard heater does running double that time. In terms of heat output, this is a great appliance. I live in California where central heating is not normal, but where it still gets cold in the evenings, especially during the winter months. I picked this heater up at a Black Friday special and I wasn't expecting a lot from it, but was pleasantly surprised. Even on the low heat setting, its output is sufficient to keep my room toasty. Now, for the caution, and reason for a two-star rating:

The safety switch on the bottom is flaky, at best; sometimes it works, but more often it sticks and won't shut off the heater. One night, a pillow fell from my bed and landed on the heater, leaving the heater partially tilted (and in such a position that it would have shut off had the safety switch been working properly). My pillow burned on a slow smolder, filling my entire bedroom with a very thick, very dangerous black smoke that would have killed me if the alarm hadn't gone off when it did. Also, it burned long enough that the plastic frame holding in the metal grate on the heater's front has partially melted.

So, if you're going to use this heater, do not leave it running while you're sleeping or otherwise not attending it. Make sure it has a HUGE clearance on all sides. And definitely, do NOT expect that the safety switch will work.

I purchased this heater for a medium size bedroom. It works great on the high setting and heats the room up very fast. Once the room heats up the low setting maintains the warmth. I love the oscillating feature because it distributes the heat more evenly. The heat replicates the sun rays and is good for me because I suffer from seasonal affective disorder. Living in the northern states during the winter with the lack of sun is depressing but this heater makes me feel like I basking in the sun. I have noticed that my two cats love the sun-like warmth of the heater. They like to sleep and groom near it. Again a good heater for the price. I have purchased higher priced heaters and was not as pleased as I am with this one.

Heater is very lightweight, as in thin plastic.

I use an under-desk heater year round, and this has saved me quite a bit in electricity bills. The low and high settings make it usable for under-desk, although it is pretty overkill.

Unit is about 2.5 feet tall, so keep that in mind.

On high with oscillation, it can easily heat a very large room.

Have owned it for 5 months now with no issues.

Having used a basic Black and Decker for the last 7 years, this Bodum though cute is quite irritating to deal with. I liked the size and the aesthetic appeal, but it has proven to be too quirky for my daily use.

First, the unit cannot be manually shut off. So when I want hot, but not boiling water, I can take it off of the base but once the pitcher has been replaced, the unit will continue to boil what is remaining in the pitcher. A huge waste of energy.

Second, if I want more than the small pitcher's worth of water to be boiled, the unit will not allow me to immediately boil a new batch of water. It has to stand and cool down for a lengthy period of time before it will allow another boil. This is in the unit's manual, but seems an unnecessary and annoying feature having spent 7 years with a kettle that allows immediate reuse.

When I first got this I was very pleased with the looks and it boiled water fine. Then after I was done I set it back on its base to gaze at it's beauty. Then the LED lit up to signal it had tuned itself back on. It realized there was no water present and turned off, only to come back on a few minutes later. The outside of the kettle was getting very hot while that was happening.

The problem was that I had removed the kettle from the base when the water started to boil instead of waiting for the kettle to first switch itself off. This is a really annoying aspect of this kettle. The ON switch should be a ON/OFF switch. You HAVE to let the kettle boil and in turn reset it's ON button. If you place it on the base without water in it with the ON button pressed in it will not reset the button. It just turns the LED on and off every couple minutes or so. Then it gets extremely hot to the touch. It's really the perfect size for my desk though so I will deal with the quirks.

Summary

Let it turn itself off after you boil water unless you want to waste electricity and possibly burn your house down.

Used this kettle for less than 30 days. One day, filled with water, turned on, and left the room. After a few minutes, I noticed strong odor of burning plastic. Kettle had failed to automatically turn off when boiling, and continued to heat, and melting of the housing/components had ensued. Switch component/handle was too hot to touch and was warped from the heat. Unplugged unit. (There was still water in the kettle, so it had not completely boiled away yet.)

Switch is now melted and stuck into the "on" position, so the kettle can no longer be used.

Emailed Bodum customer service 2 weeks ago and have received no response from manufacturer.

Besides this obvious defect. the design of the kettle is annoying in the way the on/off switch works. Once you depress the switch, you cannot turn the unit off. It only turns off when water boils.

Edit Feb 2013: Kettle has been redesigned with a proper on/off switch, now it is the perfect small kettle. No exact temp control, but you'll pay at least double for that.

Major problem with this kettle _if_ you frequently want to pour your tea with water that isn't boiling (green tea in particular is awful and bitter brewed with 190F or higher water).

There is no OFF switch. The only way it ever switches off is automatically AFTER the water has been at a full rolling boil for 10 seconds or so.

If you turn it on, let it get to 190-ish, take it off and pour all the water, then put it back on the base, it will still be on and will overheat and damage itself. There is a safety cutoff so it should not catch fire, but repeatedly turning on the heating element dry will eventually cause damage.

So, you either need to use it with a power strip or other switch, not set it on the base when empty, or, pour your tea, add water to the 8oz MIN line, put it back on the base, and waste energy letting it boil and shut itself off.

It's not worth paying to return it so I'll live with it, but it amazes me that designers can screw up something so simple as an electric kettle. Every other one out there (I think) has a switch you can manually shut off.

I purchased this because I was trying to go flame-less with my large-jar Yankee candles and do so quicker than standard warming plates, which take quite a while to melt such a candle. Well, this fit the bill alright. Within 15 minutes you can smell the candle wonderfully. A short while later, the whole jar is liquid. All that is great, but...

The very thing I wanted, speedy flame-less fragrance for an extended period of time, is also the main downside. It activates *all* the fragrance in the candle at all times. So, what you get is a strong fragrance for a much shorter period of time. Whereas a large jar Yankee candle will last a good 125+ hours, I got about 15 (yes, fifteen) hours of strong fragrance, which quickly declined thereafter until all I had was a jar of wax.

Since there's no temperature control, there's no way to prolong the candle life. After two candles, I no longer use the warmer. I gave it three stars because it does exactly what it claims and is definitely a great candle warmer. I suppose I should have foreseen the outcome as, in hindsight, it is clear that a full jar warmer would heat the entire contents at all times.

Two parting notes:

1) This would be great for using every last ounce of candle. The remnants that don't get burned via wick could be used in the warmer, but a little overkill.

2) Once you melt a candle in the warmer, the wick drops to the bottom when liquefied. Thus, it's a one-way road as you won't be able to burn the candle again.

I've had this warmer for about 6 months now, keeping it on almost 24/7, and it is still working great! I do recommend buying a bunch of Yankee votives (you can get them for $1 if you buy on sale) and I change out my votive daily. Whatever candle you put in the warmer will scent your home for a good 15-18 hours straight, whether it's a votive or larger jar candle. Votives are cheaper and you can change your scent daily (a big jar will still only last about 18 hours in this warmer) The warmer melts quickly, and starts releasing fragrance in about 3-5minutes (with a votive) I have a total of 2 in my home, we have an open floor plan and I put one in my living area, and one on my second floor It comfortably fragrances my whole home (I can even smell in the bathrooms) Just a note though: I tried putting in cheaper brand of votive, and soy votives the fragrance was a LOT more subtle and it only lasted about 6 hours.

UPDATE a year later and my warmers are still going strong on almost daily 24/7 :)

I purchased this warmer for a blind friend who loves her home filled with scents. The rolling "on-off" switch just a few inches down on the cord from the actual burner was a good feature for her. The unit seemed to heat up very quickly.

One of the major candle stores said they did NOT suggest this product because they've heard that the units get so hot that the jars surrounding the candles cracked. They further stated that the breaking occurs because even though the candle glass is tempered, they were designed to heat up from the center of the candle outward...so when we try to use these warmers there could be issues.

What I first did upon feeling the amount of heat generated was to roll up a square of tin foil to make a long curled snake to put under the candle jar so it wasn't in direct contact with the heater; still plenty of heat to melt the wax and give off the scent but not enough heat to crack the jar. There was a tiny space between the jar and the sides and I wasn't too concerned about too much hear from direct contact... So far so good, the true test of time will tell all.

One of the better quality purchases I've made. We've had this Vitapur cooler/heater for approximately 1.5 years. And I have had to replace the main circuit board once. My time +$25(Can) for a replacement board. This because we could not find our purchase receipt(we purchased at a local bricks&mortar). The circuit board was full of corrosion.

This past summer the heater stopped working. (the connection to the element appears to be corroded and was making poor contact and now the contact is completely burned off).

The final straw is that the cooler stays on and freezes the water in the reservoir to a solid block of ice.

I would leave the whole thing on the curve tonight for garbage pickup but it's got freon in it so I have to take it to the local hazardous waste disposal.

It is a shame the design & build quality is so poor, the machine is attractive looking and was exactly what we were looking for.

Looks great, works great. Took a chance with some bad reviews because I liked the design. Looks very well built.

Paired it with the Greenway water filter.

I like the on-demand hot water. Some reviewers did not. It only takes a few min. to boil. Very hot! The blue LED lighting in the dispensing area is kinda cool too.

Have owned for 6 months now. Still give it 5 stars. Only problem I've had... Once time I hit the hot water button and nothing happened. Just unplugged the cooler and plugged it back in. Worked fine after that.

It's still cooling great and is very quiet. Actually quieter than when new. Hot water is still boiling hot. No leaks, no nothing!

Will update at one year or if I have an issue earlier than that. Again, very happy with this purchase.

To bad you can't rate this with minus 5 stars...had to give it a (1)star. Purchased a Vitapur water dispenser a few weeks ago. Like other reviewers stated, their patiented "hot" water system, and I use the term 'hot' loosely, will only provide a cup of hot water in about 3 minutes. It is not a constant hot water dispenser like others I had, and the cold water even on max is not much over room temperature, and again not much over a cup at a time without having the machine re-chill. It has no on/off switches, and the water jug piercing spindle for standard water jugs is longer than most, with holes only on the top of the spindle so even though the water jug is empty the cap "well" is left with water standing that needs to be removed with a towel because if you place a new water jug in, when it seats, water splashes up and over the sides and surroundings. It may be stylish, but no where near fuunctional if your looking to have instant hot water and cold water like conventional multi-temperature dispensers. Might as well use a microwave or coffee pot to heat water...it's quicker!

My recommendation is don't waste your money like I did and stay away from this water dispenser. I'm now looking for a different 3 temperature water dispenser,.... to return it to Greenway/Vitapur would cost me about $100 between restocking fees and shipping.

This is not a 24" screen, which was what I was looking for to fit my existing grate. It is 20" on the front and 18" across the back. so it doesn't fit all the way across my grate and has a 2" gap on each side. It has stiff bars welded onto both ends. I use 2 and spread them out. It keeps fires burning longer and hotter with a more clean burn, less ash and charred pieces to fall through and have to clean up. This screen would fit the grate shown in the photo much better than mine because the 24" measurement is taken across the bottom from foot to foot.

Looks well constructed, nice design and backed by what I thought was a good brand name. I unpacked the first one and the handle fell off (glued to glass door with a heat resistant glue.) I exchanged it for another one. The timer would not turn off. Regardless of the setting, the timer would tick down to the "light" toast setting and stop. It could not automatically turn off. The case of the toaster also gets extremely hot, and the entire unit emits a chemical/plastic smell, which may go away with time. Further research indicated that the unit did not appear to be UL listed. I returned it to the store within 24 hours. The customer service department indicated they get many returned. Avoid.

I take toast very, very seriously. It is my favorite food. I have been looking for a toaster oven that can toast exotic items like bread. Turns out, the people at Black & Decker do not want me to make or eat toast.

This toaster oven toasts incredibly well. Incredibly. Well. In fact, it will toast your entire kitchen. With fire. This toaster oven actually takes bread and turns it into fire. It is a magical machine, full of mystery and wonder. If you love fire and toast, then this is the appliance for you. If you like to stay warm by the glow of a fire, then this is the appliance for you.

How to use:

1. Get fire insurance.

2. Put bread in toaster.

3. Extinguish. (Not with water though, that causes other problems, including, but not limited to, your toast being soggy)

It's pretty easy to use, except for step 1 which requires the use of a phone, which Black & Decker does not make, which is probably good because I don't like fire to be too close to my ears.

The con of this toaster oven is that it catches on fire.

*Note this is a benefit only if you are a fire enthusiast. Otherwise, this toaster only has cons.

This toaster is not suitable for children or pets.

This toaster is not suitable if your kitchen contains anything flammable, such as furniture.

This toaster only comes in white but will turn black or brown after a few uses, so don't worry about the lack of color choices. Black matches everything.

The oven door does not close very easily.

It has a blue light, I guess that's cool.

We purchased this toaster for the name of Black and Decker,and its solid reputation!

This toaster oven was purchased almost 2 years ago.

The knob fell off, and the rubber feet on the underside also fell out. We simply replaced it for the same model.

No problems whatsoever with the new one, except the rubber feet kept falling off.

About 6 months ago, the top heating element stopped working. We have been using it as is, but once again we are in the market for a new toaster oven.

I would like to mention we have been using B & D toaster ovens for over 20 years; the very first one lasted over 11 years.I expect Black and Decker products to be faultless,and to last a lifetime. Over time, I have seen B & D using cheaper parts ie, the knobs will be poorly made, handle not as sturdy, something else falling off, poor construction.

I had a B&D toaster oven for years and therefore decided to stay with the brand. WHAT A MISTAKE. Purchased from Target. This is the worst thing I have ever purchased. I've used it twice and it's going back today. Baked fine but the toast is an issue. I first set the bagel to "Stay Warm" at 150 degrees. Because the knob is evenly shaped at both ends I was set at 450 degrees. Almost a fire. My second attempt was toast at medium and the entire glass clouded over and the inside white metal is now brown. It looks like I've had it for years. Back it goes! Took it back to Target and they graciously refunded my money. Ironically, sitting on the floor behind the counter was another one.
