Discount Holmes HCH4166 Ceramic Heater with Comfort Control Thermostat

Holmes HCH4166 Ceramic Heater with Comfort Control Thermostat

Here's why.

1. It's a ceramic heater, supposedly the safest kind. Except for the meshed front, the unit's body has no hot parts.

2. At least four feet in length, the power chord is reasonably long.

3. The instructions provided are short, simple, and easily understood.

4. I use the unit in a 12'x15' room. It doesn't heat-up the entire room. I have to sit very close to the heater to feel it's powerful and focused heat blow. The lost stars in the rating.

5. There's only a soft whirring sound when it's working to reach up to the desired heat-setting. That's rather quiet.

6. I once deliberately had it on for eight straight hours. On "1500 Watts" and the maximum on the thermostat dial.

Other notes: A compact unit, it weighs little. There's a light that tells if the unit is plugged in. And another light to tell if the desired heat-setting has been reached. The unit's thermostat dial doesn't give a numerical temperature reading.

Regarding the previous review: It's not a design flaw. The "sliding control" on top has three settings. "Off," "750 Watts," and "1500 Watts." Perhaps the one you got is defective.

I purchased two of these space heaters to heat my apartment. Immediately after signing my lease I discovered that very few things worked in the apartment. The insulation is terrible, and gauging by the failure of the stove and water heater I don't trust the shoddy looking baseboard heaters. The Holmes units heat the place great. Further when I received my electric bill for November it was only thirty some dollars which was really surprising. It cost me a hundred-some to keep the place cool in the summer. Would get 5 of 5 if not for the "estimation type" thermostat dial on top. I ended up using a marker to put small ticks on it so I could set it easily.

Installation was no problem if you plan ahead with the wiring. I am impressed with the heat output. Don't be surprised when it doesn't seem to start up when you first turn it on. Give it a few seconds. It will!

This heater is top notch! It's quiet, and puts out plenty of HOT heat for a basement below grade. I'm really glad I chose this over baseboard heat. Enjoy!

Bought this heater for my man cave. Instructions were clear and I even called in for customer support to check on the breaker type and wire gauge, they were super helpful and knowledgeable. Total installation time took about 2 hours mostly to run the wiring from the breaker box to my wall location. As for heat, the 400 sq ft room heats up in about an hour from 30 to 70 degrees. Very pleased with this product and would recommend it to anyone looking to heat a man cave...

I've had my heater installed for over a year now. I use it to heat my studio/garage. It heats up the space pretty quick and maintains temperature without turning off and on all the time. If space is a consideration, you'll like this heater. It takes up very little wall space.

The knobs came speedily and were fine, but did not fit the toaster oven that I have-EuroPro TO161. Would be wonderful for an appliance that they fit.

I just wanted it to fit my 10 year old Crock pot and it did. I am ecstatic to be able to use it again instead of buying a new one or throwing it out. I wasn't pressed by the color of the knob, it only comes in black. I just wanted it work. Packaging and delivery was everything I expected.

I don't hate it as the 1 star rating would tell you, It's just the best choice of rating I can give it. I was impressed with the price of the item and the fact that it said it could fit what I needed it to. But, it did not fit the window unit AC I was purchasing it for so I submitted for a refund and sent the item back.

Very pleased with the knobs. I was able to repair two crockpots whose original knobs were broken. It might appear that the knobs are not a fit, but a screw in the bottom of the each control knob adjusts them to fit.

Here in MI things get cold quick and living in a cold finished basement makes things tough. My computer room is a tiny 6x10 and doesn't have vents for heat. The hallway near the doorway lacks them as well so it gets very cold. When I saw this heater for i figured to give it a try for that room.

The heat is just about instant. No waiting for it to warm up. The thermostat works nice to keep the room at a very comfortable level. Nice to have so you don't have to keep adjusting and turning on and off. Sound is very quiet. Much more quiet than my normal desk fan, but it sits on the floor under the desk. I just realized its sitting right on the carpet and I wouldn't worry about it falling over or anything. It is very sturdy and kicking it somewhat gently doesn't knock it over. The unit is very cool to the touch even while running. I actually picked it up while running and was examining the bottom.

I was kinda disappointed about one thing. From the picture on the box I assumed it would oscillate which would be a cool feature, but since its only its not a big deal at all. It does have a swivel base that turns about 45 degrees either way, but with it being so light I don't see a point.

This unit is 1500 watts ... um or amps ... whichever the case, my computer is a gamer computer and it draws ... a lot. So the point is that when I am gaming, I have noticed that every time the heater kicks on the lights dim a little bit just for a split second since I have them both running off the same circuit. I don't know if I would put them in the same outlet ... but then again nothing goes into the same outlet as the PC anyways.

Pros: light, quiet, instant heat, doubles as a fan, PRICE!

Cons: not really any unless you need one that oscillates or you are going to land an airplane with your Christmas lights this year.

I used this both for cooling (in fan-only mode) and heating. The heat works great, and it warms up almost instantly. The cooling side is good, but it doesn't push as much air as some regular fans, so I need it a 2-3 feet away to feel enough breeze to cool me.

The plastic grill does rapidly change color to show it's hot, but I found that unneeded because the grill itself never gets hot. At times, I've had it accidently fall over or get covered, and it's never overheated or made something crispy. :-)

The thermostat also works well, and is easy and user-friendly to adjust. The fan is very quiet; sometimes I don't notice it's on. It's very lightweight and is easily swiveled to fine-tune the direction.

Mine finally died after frequent use for 8-10 months, but I feel I got my money's worth, and I'm buying another to replace it.

I bought this heater early January when we went through some cold weather in Miami. I was very pleased with the way the heater was heating up my bedroom (about 12x12). You can set the heater at the temperature that is comfortable to you (note that there are no precise thermostats that allows you to set your room at a specific temperature, but just a comfort thermostat that works just fine). it generates a lot of heat in a short period of time and woks wonder.

My only issue is that it stopped functioning after only a month. I may have bought a bad one. I called Holmes, gave the serial number and promptly sent me a new one by UPS.

I was very pleased with their customer service and I just hope this one will last longer.

Bought this to warm a cold study but it started sparking on the 3rd use ( and past time I could return it). Completely defective I can hear loose wire when I pick it up. The sparks were frightening if I hadn't been in the room I don't know what might have happened but now I understand how space heaters burn houses down.

I bought this in the winter of 2007 to heat a cold office. It worked well and I used it for a few hours each weekday for two winters. Toward the end of the third winter (last year), it started turning off after a few minutes of use. Now it stays on for about two minutes and then shuts off for 5-10 minutes. It's not being used in an enclosed space or with anything close to it; it seems to be sensing overheating without actually overheating. Maybe I'm expecting too much by thinking this should have lasted longer, but two and a half winters of use just doesn't seem like enough. I wouldn't recommend this heater.

Stand fan heater much more powerful then compact fan heater. hot hot hot.. Has to be positioned a distant away from people. Thermostat can be set to desired temp and shuts off after a few minutes reaching the setting.

Cons:

Took a while to figure out how to assemble the base/pedestal part. But once that's done evrything's fine.

I find that in general Lasko products are reliable.

I have bought a Lifesmart heater from Amazon before and it worked great. After reading the 1 bad and 2 good reviews I decided to try out this new 8 element unit. I bought it thru Amazon Prime since I knew they would take it back if we were not happy with the performance. As you can see from my 5 star review we are definitely keeping it. This unit has a really nice cabinet and a much bigger remote than the Lifesmart I bought last year. It also has the same eco 500 watt setting that is great for when it really is not that cold and you just want a little bit of warmth. My wife moves it into the laundry room and closes the door and on 500 watts it heats a small room great. Then at night we turn it up on the 1500 watt setting to make our extra large family room toasty. We use last year's heater in the bedroom upstairs so now were not heating the whole house. The other nice benefit to this heater is that it has a 3 year warranty vs. a 1 year that I noticed was pretty standard. It's nice to know in a throw away world you can buy something for under $200 and know it will work at least 3 years. I now have a Lifesmart sauna, and 2 heaters. We are a big believer in the Lifesmart brand.

This is a very safe product and looks great too. It is also likely the best one at heating a large room because it can continuously pull a little over 1400W (12-amps) on the high setting, putting out more heat compared to smaller ones and ceramic electric heaters that only really draw about 800W. They may all be rated at "1500W" but none of them really draw that much when warm. Having more elements gives it more heating surface area to dissapate heat, which allows it to pull more power all the time. There are also low and eco settings so it doesn't draw the 1400W if you don't need the extra heat. Because it does draw more power than other units you have to be more conscious of what else is on that circuit so you don't trip the breaker. If you have 15-amp breakers, then this thing will be drawing about 12 amps, so you cannot also run a vacuum cleaner on that circuit or a refrigerator or microwave or other large device.

This is advertised as 1800W in places, but in the owners manual it says 1500W. However, in the same owners manual it says it may draw up to 15 amps, which would indeed be 1800W. In my actual testing it draws about 1440W (12 amps) continuously, which is actually about twice as good as most smaller cheaper ceramic electric heaters or any other wire coil electric heater. I have tested multiple units that draw less than 800W, and my "3-element" LifeSmart portable unit is the best small unit I have able to draw and dissapate just over 900W continuously on high. The fan is not loud, it is also not silent, it needs to get all that heat dissapated and distributed.

The wood is always cool to the touch, doesnt heat up and the power cable doesnt get hot either like some other electric heaters. it will probably look best on carpet, because on a hard floor the legs are above the ground a little bit since it sets on the casters, and the 4 wooden legs are just a bit higher than those wheels. On carpet the wheels will sink a bit so the legs look like they are on the ground. I keep this one at my office and it helps warm up the corner of the building where my cubicle is. It is a large building, about a 20,000 sq-ft floor and our boiler has not worked for a year. It will get down to about 50 degrees inside the building on the coldest nights/mornings, and even when its about 58-62F outside this helps get my corner of the building to 68-70F in a couple hours making it much more comfortable to sit in the cubicles. There are other little personal space heaters on other power circuits helping to warm up the entire floor, but mine is the only one in about 2000sq-ft.

If you just need to keep one person warm, then a $50 ceramic heater would do fine when placed a few feat away from the person, although these IR based units provide a more comfortable temperature of air (not as hot) but more distributed so it can warm up a whole couch or something like that.

So Pros

(1) Great performance, actually providing a lot more heat output than the small cheap ceramic units

(2) Very safe, case does not get warm, has heavy duty power cable, its shuts off from tip over or just knocking it hard

(3) The real wood looks great

(4) The timing settings and remote are nice

I dock one star for the following

(1) I was hoping it would be able to draw at least 1500W continuous with the "8-elements", but at ~1440W its still better than any other forced air electric heater I have tested.

(2) The buttons are a little cheap feeling.

(3) I am not a fan of the beeping when hitting buttons, but only do that when turning it on and setting it up.

Our house has a heat pump and although the house is well insulated, with 6" exterior walls, the heat pump leaves a lot to be desired the house, in winter, is always cold and the heat pump runs constantly, with the thermostat set at 70 degrees. Last winter I had to set the thermostat to supplemental heat the entire winter and it was still cold so we used space heaters, too our electric bill in January and February were ridiculously high. The Lifesmart Ultimate 8 Element 1800 Square Foot Infrared Heater w/Air Ionizer arrived yesterday afternoon. The house was 74 degrees when it arrived with no heat turned on, just sunshine and a warmer day heating the house, but the temperature by early evening was dropping steadily and there was constant strong cold wind. Overnight it was in the low forties. Today it is only going to reach into the mid-fifties. Unpacked the Lifesmart after it arrived yesterday, turned it to on, and set it to 74 degrees. We didn't turn on the central heat, and around seven o'clock last evening the Lifesmart began heating we monitored the thermometers round the house and they never dropped from 74 degrees by the time we went to bed at 11 p.m. I awoke at 3 a.m. and walked into every room in the house (most rooms have a thermometer hung on the wall or a tabletop display thermometer) and every room was 74 degrees. The Lifesmart is so quiet, too. We are going to buy a smaller Lifesmart for the Master Bedroom, as we keep the door closed to keep the dog and cat out while we sleep. Will update this review next month after the electric bill arrives.

My order arrived in three days, in perfect condition. The heater is very easy to use and was able to bring the room temperature up 10 degrees in 1:30 and is holding nicely at 68 degrees.. Very quiet. I highly recommend it.

Takes a while to assemble need to get some grey grout from Lowe's there will be one gap between the pieces but it is an easy fix. Over all really good. Wish I could get a gas insert for it the fuel is a little high dollar but my wife enjoys it and that is all that matter. one more thing it is cheaper here by several hundred dollars on other sites.
