First a little info about portable ACs, then I will review the Haier 8000 BTU.

No portable will EVER match a window AC of the same BTU, so if you have the option to install a window unit, you should do so. A window unit will be cooler and use less power. Here is why:

A single hose unit means the hose will exhaust hot air thru the hose. But it needs an intake source of air the intake will be from the room itself so you are taking the air that you just cooled and exhausting it out the window.

Next, the exhaust hose itself as noted by other reviewers, gets very hot. As hot as a radiator in the winter.

And the AC unit itself gets hot the portables have the entire unit inside the room so it is heating up the room. Window units have the working parts outside of the room so they don't heat up the room anywhere as much.

So now you are heating the room as well as dumping cold air out the exhaust.

This is why a portable can never be as efficient as a window unit. I think you would need at least twice the BTUs of a window unit to get the same cooling power. I think the manufacturer's of the portables give you a theoretical BTU rating but with the issues of exhausting cooled air and heat generated by the unit and from the exhaust you will never get the theoretical BTUs.

This is true for all single hose portables. Dual hose portables will be more efficient (good luck finding an inexpensive one), but still not as efficient as window units as they still have the issue of the exhaust hose emitting heat into the room. Putting insulation around the exhaust hose will help. But please do not use pink fiberglass wall insulation it's not very healthy for you if it is not completely sealed off ie inside a wall.

Now to the Haier itself:

The model I purchased CPRB08XCJ can be controlled without the remote all the buttons that are on the remote are also on the unit. The screws are not too short to attach the adapter to the panel you must put the screws in from the front the side facing inside the room. The instructions are pretty simple so maybe the other reviewers got an older version of the instructions or I have a different model.

Depending on the humidity, you will need to empty the unit. I had my unit on for 3 hours, and there was a lot of water when I drained it. Had I not drained it, I think the unit would have shut off once the tank was full; it is supposed to have an auto shut off. I drained it before it shut by itself.

I also tried connecting a drain hose but that was a minor disaster the fitting is just a nipple that you push a hose into (does not come with a hose) -it came loose and water got all over. It would be nice if Haier included a hose that threads onto the nipple.

The room I used it in is 8x12. The air coming out of the unit felt cool, and it cooled the room a bit but it did not cool the room well; on a scale of 1 to 10, I give it 4 on cooling, probably due to the issues mentioned above. To be fair, I used the unit on the hottest nights (so far) of this year it was above 90 degrees at night. I have not used the unit during the day yet haven't been home. I expect the unit will perform better this week, as the night temps will be in the 80s.

The unit does not have directional fins it only blows straight out. I did not think this would be an issue but it is: the exhaust hose is very stiff and it is hard to turn the unit to the direction you want it.

Also, be aware that the cord is about 6 feet long, and it is not recommended to use an extension cord. So make sure you can reach an outlet, while trying to keep the exhaust tube as shortened as possible. The closer you can get the unit to the window, the shorter the hose will be and thus the less heat will be emitted into the room.

As others have mentioned it is not easily moved from room to room you must wrangle with hose and the weight.

Overall, I do not think the cooling capacity of other single hose units will be much better. It would be a better unit if it had a separate intake hose, an included screw in drain hose, and directional fins. So an okay unit if you have no option to use a window AC, with some minor annoyances. I gave it 3 stars, but is really more like 2 and 1/2 stars.

I was in the market for a new air conditioner for my 12x15 bedroom, and upon reading the other customer reviews was sure that for the size, BTU, and price the Haier CPRB08XCJ 8000 was going to be the right fit for my needs. Upon setup and as I began using the product I ran into several issues.

The first was that the directions on setup and installation were unclear, even for such a seemingly simple process.

Secondly, while the air conditioner is said to cool a room up to 250-300 sq feet, it was struggling to cover my 180. And while it does seem to do a better job at dehumidifying than cooling, the amount of drainage from the collected water is unmanageable. The product was said to be mostly self-evaporating with a reservoir tank that will hold the excess. I was aware that the unit may need occasional drainage. I however am unable to run the unit for more than 3-4 hours before the tank is full and shuts itself off completely. Since I am using this in my bedroom there is no convenient way to drain the tank without either completely detaching it from its window fittings and rolling it into my bathroom, or allowing it to drain into pots or pans and carrying them to the kitchen sink. The other night, while I was sleeping, I attempted to just allow the unit to drain as it cooled into a spare aluminum casserole pan but the amount of water was so great that halfway through the night it had already begun overflowing. I'm going to try to find some rubber hose to fit to the drainage spout to put out my window, but without elevating the incredibly heavy unit I cant see how it will ever truly drain efficiently. I could forgive this extra inconvenience if the unit was effectively cooling my small room, but it is all around lackluster.

Thirdly I think calling this air conditioner portable is a little misleading. In order for me to move the unit into another room I need to unplug the unit from the wall, disconnect the exhaust hose, unscrew the window fitting to change the size and remove it from my window frame then transport the unit to the other room and refit the exhaust hose and window fittings . It doesn't sound like too much, but the whole process takes about 15-20 minutes. i suppose by purchasing several of the panels that go into the window frame I could keep those preinstalled into other windows in the house, but with all of the extra expense and hassle I just don't think this air conditioner is worth the fuss.

I had also tried researching some troubleshooting methods, but Haier doesn't even list this product on their website.

Lastly, because I purchased the air conditioner sponsored by amazon but sold by this company called Beach Audio I cannot return the product to amazon. Beach Audio has a 30 day return policy that excludes certain items including air conditioners regardless if they are defective or not. It was my mistake for not researching this before my purchase, but I was told that their return policy was 30 days and I didn't see the need to investigate it further.

I have two LG 9,000's for the bigger rooms which I LOVE but needed one a bit smaller for my babies room (the central AC is horrible at cooling upstairs!), so we got this one the other day and it is perfect. You don't need to drain it so I don't know what the previous review was talking about. It is self evaporating and uses it's own water cond. to cool itself. The window mount it much better then my LG's too. It's a very stylish and a small box AC that works wonderful and keeps me less stressed at night worrying about the comfort of my 18 month old at night. I have a thermostat reading in my room that tells me the temp in his room and this AC keep it exactly at what I wanted it to. Love it so far and recommend for sure!

Honest reviews on Haier Portable Air Conditioner, 8000 BTUs, CPRB08XCJ

I was looking for a good, small, and cheap portable unit to install upstairs in my gameroom, HOA does not allow for window units. This unit preforms fairly well for its size. It does not have a water collection bin through you must drain it through a hose, but I have a central unit that removes alot of the humidity.

The installation was fairly easy except for a few small problems, it comes with 4 tiny screws that are supposed to attach the exhaust hose to the window spacer, but they where not long enough, I had to use 4 tiny bolts and washers instead.

When installing it remember to keep the exhaust hose as straight as possible any bends reduce efficiency. Also I bought some insulating wrap form home depot and covered the exhaust hose. I used a temp gun and saw that the exhaust hose had a temp form 95-110 degrees. The window insert they give you is a joke also you should install some insulation around it also.

Update on review:now one year later moved to garden level in Brooklyn cools much better than on the 5th floor south side apartment but still doesn't cool a large room even with cool air coming out solution -a very good fan to circulate the air. It is a fabulous dehumidifier but handling the water without a nearby drain is a problem still emptying buckets adn working on a solution . . .perhaps a fish tank pump from the bucket out the window :-).

Original review: We needed an air conditioner for a small East Village apartment in New York City for one of our kids going to school there. The apartment windows are on the south side. The alternative to this kind of portable unit was to have (and pay) for the installation of a window bracket and still buy a unit so we gave it a try. It does a great job given the windows allow the blast of hot sunlight in the afternoon (curtains are bound to help).

There is NO issue with water drainage when it is just being used as an air conditioner. The unit auto-evaporates as it works. According the the manual you only need to worry about drainage when you have it in dehumidifier mode. NYC is plenty humid in the summer and there has been no problem with the unit which is humming along 24/7 for two weeks now.

It is wonderful not to have a window blocked with an air conditioner box or to worry about taking it out for winter (or covering well enough to keep out the cold). Things that would improve this unit: include small screws with nuts instead of sheet metal screws to attach the exhaust conduit to the plastic window 'sleeve' and toss in the box some standard foam window weather stripping to pad underneath the window-sleeve.

I did extensive research before purchasing my portable air conditioner. Thanks to some reviewers I learned that having a dual hose is key, as a double and contrary pressure inside one hose could create problems in the future (the AC pulls air from outside and releases air from the room, it's a double process get a dual hose). So I searched for a dual hose as a pre-requisite and the only one I found on Amazon was this 13,000 btu Soleus. Even though the room I needed it for was a relatively small bedroom, I went for this item. And I'm so happy I did!

The machine is really big, really huge, and extremely heavy. But pretty good looking, with a great design. Packaging was large and bulk, and it traveled a long way to where I am. The side panels were a bit damaged from shipping and handling and I hoped it wouldn't be a problem, so far not a problem.

There is nothing portable about it. Besides its heavy weight, once you install the window kit, the last thing you want is to keep moving it around and compromise a good installation.

I did not receive one of the accessories, the sliding panel, and the instructional dvd and manual showed that this was necessary for installing the AC on my window, but we figured it out in the end with what we had. My window is a horizontal sliding window. I adapted two of the panels I had (one with two exhaust hose openings and one with no openings) to one end of the window, mending the two to cover the entire vertical length. Attaching the exhaust hoses was really easy, all I had to do was make sure that the window kit was well screwed in my window, to hold, and then stretch the hoses and attach them to the AC unit.

When I plugged it in and turned it on it sounded like I had a plane's engine right inside my room. It was so loud! Later I grew used to it and now it doesn't bother me anymore, in fact, it helps, because it simply eliminates any other noises you might have from outside.

The first night after about three hours the AC mode simply shut off and it went into fan mode. A red light was on, indicating that the condensate holding tank was full. I couldn't believe this, since it had been on for only three hours! So I fit a small tray from my toaster oven under the drain plug and discarded all the water that came out of it.

The second night, we figured we should just leave the drain plug open and the toaster oven tray under it. We woke up to a flooded room, as the tray is barely enough to hold so much water.

Since the drain plug is so near the floor, the only solution was to put the AC on top of a low coffee table, which in fact, shortened the length of the exhaust hoses, optimizing the overall cooling capacity, as one of the hoses gets pretty warm and the longer the hose, the harder the AC will have to work to cool the air around it.

Now we have it all set. Our AC sits on top of a coffee table, with a bucket behind it and the tiny hose that came with it attached to the drain plug. The drain plug is always open, and the water that comes out of the unit simply fills the bucket to about 1/3, it is so much water! But the AC mode never shuts off anymore, and you get some healthy humidifying from having a bucket full of water in the bedroom and the hoses are less stretched, ensuring better cooling.

So far, so good! The AC does an excellent job of cooling the room and I absolutely love it!

I purchased this unit in July 2008 and I have had nothing but problems with it. The Soleus support line is always busy, and when you do get someone, they look for an answer and never call back. My front panel to control the unit does not work, and I have tried to get Soleus to replace the panel, with no luck. I have to use the remote control to use the A/C. Around 2 years of service, and the unit started leaking water. It appears the drain line for the unit is not placed far enough back, and so the water pan just drips out of the unit, right onto the floor. You can pay to have the unit shipped back and repaired they said, but the minimum charge is $150 plus shipping charges. Don't waste your money!

This thing does not evaporate well, still have to empty the tray every other day. But it does not flood your floor it shuts off when full.

As for heating this unit is completely useless. A $50 ceramic unit will heat better than this heat pump.

Don't bother buying if your temp outside goes below 40 this unit will not heat to keep even 65. (This was heating a room around 250 sq ft)

Overpriced air conditioner.

Honest reviews on Soleus Air PH4-13R-01 13,000 BTU Evaporative Portable Air

I actually purchased Soleus Air PH4-13R-01 13,000 BTU Evaporative Portable Air Conditioner, 13,000 BTU Heater, Dehumidifier and Fan locally as the ones sold on Amazon are getting poor reviews, but mine shoots out 61°F cold air 24/7 and never leaks or needs to be drained although we are having the most humid summer I can ever remember. A favorite 2012 purchase which I would have purchased on Amazon were it not for all the bad reviews there.

UPDATE OCT 21, 2012 This A/C ran 24/7 up until about a week ago when it finally cooled off and never once did it leak or need to be drained. I am extremely happy with my Soleus Air PH4-13R-01!

UPDATE JUNE 30, 2013 It was very humid here and I ran this 24hours straight more for the humidity than for the heat at 61°F and it did not leak once. I have it set up to exhaust to the outside and intake inside air as my home is loose. Also I like having it set up next to the entry way window as that way I can use floor fans to direct the air up to 30feet into the room(s) I want. This weighs 80lbs so you really don't want to be moving it all the time. I am very thrilled with this portable A/C, dehumidifier, heater, and fan. I have used it as a heater during the winter too and that was great.

The heat pump for our house is probably a bit too old and under-sized for our house. For the last seven years or so I have placed a very small window AC unit in our (2nd story) master bedroom to help cool the house in the summer. Thinking that the window unit was making the house look a bit trashy we decided to replace it with this unit.

Overall, we are quite pleased with the unit, but it takes up quite a bit of space in the bedroom. Sometimes I think the window unit was easier in that sense certainly cheaper / took less indoor space.

A word about capacity the previous unit was only 8000 BTU this unit claims to be larger in capacity and it may very well be but it certainly seems to take a bit longer to cool the room / upper floor of the house. (this seems typical of this type read up online) BUT it isn't nearly as noisy as the old unit was. There is a small rattle that is solved by placing a small pillow on the left side of the unit annoying, but workable.

The remote is probably a cool feature, but we simply set to temp and move on. We never touch it. I'm curious how the heater will work in the winter.

Relatively easy to install took about an hour the unit is quite heavy over 100 lbs easily takes some effort to move.

Don't turn on for 24 hours after you've moved the unit especially if turned on it's side. I let the unit sit in our bedroom for a few days as we had to set it at an angle to transport.

CONS this unit is expensive, takes up a lot of room INSIDE of the house, might take a bit longer to cool than a window unit.

PROS easy to install, remote nice feature, works pretty well.

I did a ton of research and bought a few heaters before this one but I'm most happy with the Vornado. The first two I bought were digital ceramic heaters. I have to recommend against getting a digital heater. Each time you turn it on, you have to push several controls to get back to where you like it, with this heater, you just turn it on. The only thing that kept me from buying it first was cost and the fact that it had no ceramic element which theoretically was a safer element than an electric coil. We use it in a few bedrooms that are not freezing cold but uncomfortably cold. The other great feature is it'll run on lower power and only use as much wattage as is needed to heat the room. My other heaters would run full blast till it hit the desired temperature, then turn off, repeat over and over. The trouble is, heaters will use about as much power as must rooms have available so if you have anything else plugged in, you'll throw the circuit breaker, which happened over and over for me. A 1200w heater (which is common) will use over 10Amps. That's a TON of power. The Vornado will run and heat just fine on a low power setting using about 5A max and less if less is needed.

Here's a summary of what I like:

Pros:

Plastic grill never gets hot to the touch why do others use metal ?

Only uses the power it needs to gives your electric panel a rest

Much easier to use than digital heaters don't buy digital !

Compact and stable on the floor

Well built many heaters are absolute junk

Cons:

Expensive for a space heater

No ceramic element which MAY mean it could spark easier

When running on high, I noticed a buzzing noise in the fan but not during normal use

This heater is exactly what I needed. I've had it for a few days now, and it works perfectly.

I primarily wanted a heater that would work with an external / plug-in / wall timer. You know, the thing with the dial. So many heaters have a "timer" which is actually just one-time automatic shut-off, so you still need to turn it on, and set the timer, each night. I wanted something that would turn on and off at specific times of day, and there aren't many if any.

This heater has three rocker switches for power, heat level, and fan speed; it has a dial for temperature. There are no toggles or digital settings or anything. That means you can cut power to it, then restore power, and it's right back to where you left it -same temp setting, everything. I have it plugged into a heavy duty timer rated for 1875 watts.

Beyond meeting that specific requirement of mine, this is a great heater. It delivers on its promise of even heating. It circulates the air very well, and automatically adjusts both fan speed and heat output. Much better than heaters that simply cycle. It's also very quiet -I didn't believe its "whisper-quiet" claims, but it's true.

One step down (VH2) and you lose the automatic fan and heat level ("A" is for automatic). One step up (DVH) and you get digital, which probably won't work on a timer.

Best Deals for Vornado AVH2 Whole Room Vortex Heater, Automatic Climate Control

I can't believe all the bad reviews for Vornado heaters. My wife bought one almost 10 years ago at a garage sale and we've used it every night during the winters for years. I took it hunting and hooked it up in the back of a pickup truck in the winter at 10 degrees outside, we slept on top of the sleeping bags in our underwear. We bought the VH2 a few years back and use it during the winter in another room in the house. We keep the house at around 64 degrees at night and have one heater for the entire upstairs 4 bedrooms. It raises the temp a couple of degrees and you can tell the difference the moment you go downstairs. The other in our family room, over a crawl space, keeps the room very comfortable even on the coldest nights AND it's an open room about 14 feet wide and 35 feet long. Just angle it in the general direction and you'll feel the difference. THIS IS NOT A WHOLE HOUSE HEATER! It is a space heater which means heating a relatively small space. It cranks out hot air quickly but it's going to take a while to make a difference in a big room. In the back of a pickup truck in the middle of winter it was like a sauna so we had to keep turning it down. In a house with 8 foot ceilings and large rooms don't expect it to do more than heat up the general area. Defects aside these things are in my experience safe for kids and pets (no RED element, COOL to the touch) and reliable. I still like the old one but after all these years it is starting to make an occassional noise. I'm buying another one and putting that old reliable in my basement.

Bottom line is despite the bad reviews on Vornado it's the only brand I've had good experience with. Holmes isn't very good. I've got one in a 7 x 5 bathroom that really barely heats up that room, putting a Vornado in there would likely peel the paint off the wall. We keep our costs down by running one in the family room where we spend our time, then one for our upstairs at night. Since hot air rises you don't lose any down the steps and you can close doors if you only need to HELP a couple of rooms.

Honest reviews on Vornado AVH2 Whole Room Vortex Heater, Automatic Climate Control

Pros: Solid construction, safe around my cats (not likely to be knocked over, and little paws are safe), heating element not visible in a dark room, high/low setting, can be used as fan, heats up my room better than my cheaper (but reliable) holms heater.

Cons: It doesn't feel anything like my car heater on max setting.

Noise. On the high setting it reminds me of a locast swarm a mile awayon the low setting it's even louder. Durability: unknown.

I would give it five stars if half the price, but I don't think it's a great value for the money.

*edit* after one year the unit started having problems. It will overheat within seconds of turning the unit on and shut itself off. The work around is to run the fan first before turning up the heater control. I believe that this is a problem with the power supply that is built into the unit not providing enough wattage to simultaneously start the fan and run the heater; if you start the fan first the problem is avoided (a fan draws more electricity when starting than once it's running).

I have a 16 month old daughter and wanted a heater that I did not have to worry about her burning herself on. I read the reviews and liked what I heard. I saw many claiming they were breaking. I marked this down as x amount of any product breaks.

Worked great for a little over a month producing an even warm heat capable of maintaining a comfortable temperature in even the largest rooms in my three story brick home. One day I noticed it was putting out more heat than it should and was warmer to the touch. I turned it off. My wife turned it on later that night and it made a rattling sound so she immediately powered it off. I turned it on once more the following morning, a fat blue spark arced in the motor and that was it. I will now be sending the unit to Vornado and am without the heater and out the shipping and I'm now worried from other reviews that this will not be the last time it is shipped off for repair. For the price this is ridiculous quality.

Based on my experience I would not recommend this heater.

Sunbeam Ceramic Heater
Customer Ratings: 2.5 stars
Buy Now
Bought at Walmart for $30 in February as a little heater to warm up my wife's craft room since its a back bedroom and we only open to receive heat from the rest of the house when she is working in it. However, I will be taking this heater back. The heater is a handsome little unit: 10" tall, 14" wide, and 8" deep. It sits on a 7"x9" base that makes the unit very stable and resistant to tipping over from accidental bumping. The base allows 360 degree rotation and about 15 degree tilting. The heater's operating modes (per the manual) are: Fan Only, Low Heat ("if applicable..." said the manual. This unit did have Low Heat mode.),Eco-Smart, Max Heat, and Thermostat Control. Max Heat runs continuously at 1500 watts. Low Heat (if it were available) would run continuously at 750 watts. Eco-Smart "cycles between High Heat (1500 watts) and Low Heat (750 watts) settings...". Thermostat Control only has four room-temperature settings: 70, 75, 80, and 85 degrees. The extreem left of the thermostat scale has a "Frost Protect" setting (thermostat control set for 40 degrees). The extreem right of the thermostat scale is "Constant On". While the front of the heater presents a good sized 8"x14" grill, it is for looks only the actual heat producing opening is only 2"x6". The remainder of the area behind the grill is just black plastic. When the heater is on and at 6" from the front of the heater, you feel VERY hot air at 18" from the front you feel no hot air. This is my first point about the poor functionality of this unit: the output of the internal fan is so pathetic that it can barely produce enough of a wheeze of air to get the heat only a few inches out of the heater and then (hot air rising) goes straight to the ceiling. Perhaps this is a general trait of all ceramic heaters: they can produce very hot air without using red-hot (read: accidental ignition source) heat elements; however, they cannot support large volumes of air being passed through them. Here is my second point on the poor functionality of this heater: Although the box advertises: "High/Low Heat Settings" the low setting is not actually selectable. The unit seems to run at a high heat output all the time I did not discern any "cycling" between a high and low heat output in the lame "Eco-Smart" mode. The third point is the thermostat control: only four choices: 70,75,80, and 85 nothing inbetween and nothing below 70 degrees room temp is available, and it seems to operate at max heat when in thermostat mode. Dear Sunbeam, What I wanted to know about a heater is: the heat wattage of the settings, the operating range of the thermostat, and can the low heat only setting be selected for thermostat control. You're packaging told me absouluty nothing about the details and specifications of a heater that are actually important. Oh, by the way, people are tired of, and turned off, by manufacturers who trot out the same mediocre, half-hearted designed products but think that by putting a green leaf on the box and use the word "eco-" that consumers will think that the products received an improvement of some sort.

This heater is a great idea, and the functions work great. It is one of the best space heaters I have owned with one major exception. I think they undersized the wiring on it, because the power cord gets very hot, and I'm afraid it will catch fire. It actually melted my Kill-A-Watt power meter I had it plugged into. I wouldn't buy this item. It does heat very nicely, but it is a fire hazard in my opinion. Made in China...

Honest reviews on Sunbeam Ceramic Heater

This heater started out heating a small bathroom and washroom quite well.Like other products I have purchased I bought before looking at reviews. After 30 days the heater started to blow cold air.At this point I looked up the reviews and saw where mine wasn't the only one that has done this.Rather than to take it back and let them throw it away and not do anything about it I decided to take the heater apart and see what was causing the problem..If costing me $30 keeps one house from burning down it has made the loss profitable. There are 3 wires leading to the heating elements 2 red and 1 black in the middle. The black wire in the middle had been hot and melted the plastic cover on the wires and had burnt in two.I have pictures but cant upload them here.Just another Chinese piece of DANGEROUS JUNK.

We've had this about a year. Have not had any issues and we use it every day; placed near where we sit. However, when used in a bedroom sized space (our office) and keeping the door closed, it heats up the area quite nicely and soon we turn it off when it reaches a heated comfort level for us. However, due to reviews about a burned wire, I will be more careful in how long I let it run and I do always turn it off and unplug it when I leave the space.

I am disapointed that there are not more reviews on this product! We have a second home in the mountains with a bar/gameroom downstairs which has central heat, but still maintains a chilly 50degrees in the winter(outside temps in the teens). We wanted a small space heater to push the temp to around 60degrees. The room has a fireplace, but we don't want to burn a cord of wood every winter just to use the space for a few drinks or a movie. We bought a small Honeywell heater which didn't put out enough heat. We exchanged it for a bigger Pure Comfort box but it died the first night and the local hardware store didn't have a replacement... so.. we got back to the flatlands and purchased a Vornado. I plugged it in and I tried to warm our large(12ft ceiling-250sqft) living room just to see how it would perform, but after 40minutes it didn't seem to do much. I then moved it to our family room which is about 200sqft w/8ft ceilings, but is not an enclosed room(open to kitchen and hallway). I feel the heat blowing from the unit but I don't feel the overall space getting warmer... so.. i guess the jury is still out. I plan on taking it up to our mountain home next weekend to heat the 150sqft gameroom, but I am skeptical. Having the unit next to you in quite comfortable but it doesn't seem to warm the entire room. Probably this is not a good test.. my expectations might be too high. In an enclosed room it might be alright. Right now it seems like a good under-the-desk unit for your office... but.. update coming...

We purchased this heater after our other, much older one, burned out. This heater is relatively small and runs pretty quietly, which is nice. But that isn't enough to compensate for the absurdly poor amount of heat that it puts out. We didn't expect much from a small room heater, but out of all of the room heaters that we have ever used this is by far the weakest one. It is also disappointing that this heater has very few settings and doesn't oscillate. If you want a little heater to warm your toes during spring while you're also running a stronger heater then by all means, get this one. If you're looking for an actual heater that has the ability to heat an entire room by more than 4 degrees than this is certainly not for you.

The Owner's Guide uses page 2 exclusively to inform reader that Vornado products are "Designed, engineered and supported in Andover, Kansas.

My first Vornado purchase many years ago was the Vortex Heat Whole Room Portable Electric Space Heater. It was smooth, quiet, and best of all it offered a continuous running fan while the heat cycled off and on. This made for an uniterrupted pleasing sound to sleep or work by. It pleased me to think that these must be better machines because they were Made in America.

However, since then I have purchased 2 more such type units. Both, regretablly, not like the 1st. Both had a sporadic rattle of some sort that could be easily heard. I called customer service to voice my unhappiness, but there was not a sympathetic customer service rep on the other end. I still have these 2 units.

In November, 2012, I ordered the TH1 Tower Heater from Vornado for $99.99, with much anticipation that it surely would meet the preference for that continuous running fan feature and the quiet running feature they especially emphasized. Upon its first use, there was an obvious high-pitched whirring sound that was audible beyond the actual whir of the fan. As I wanted to utilize the unit for a pleasant "white" type sound as much for the heat feature, I was disappointed.

Maybe most people would never notice, but being sound sensitive it is an irritant to me.

I called customer service and was met with a listening, concerned, warm-hearted customer rep. He had me download and print off a UPS mailing label for its return. Furthermore, he stated he would go ahead and have another mailed back to me. This transaction was very good, very pleasing.

In a reasonable amount of time, the replacement arrived.

Upon its first use, the same whirring sound was still present. Ugh! I will keep it & use it, but will do so when needing "quietness" isn't an imperative.

In conclusion, the unit may be designed, engineered and supported in Kansas, but it definitely is Made In China.

I previously had a propane patio heater with a pilot light. What a pain! This heater with a pilotless direct ignition is fantastic. It lights right away, then shut it off when you are done. No getting on a stepstool and peering into the heater to see if the damn pilot light is lit. Plus, they blow out, not to mention that the thermocouple does not last and then you might as well throw them away, since they are not easy to repair. With this unit, you turn it on when you want to use it and then shut it down. Much easier to use and worth the extra money. Unit is not too heavy, so easy to move around on the built in wheels. A bit disappointed that the "stainless" steel base is beginning to rust in only a few months, but I can probably get it off with a little steel wool. Assembly is about 45 minutes and instructions are good. I am buying a second one and would never go back to a model with a pilot light. Get a patio heater cover for it also. Exposing the burners and ignition system to the elements most likely shortens the life of a heater significantly.

I'm very disappointed in the value proposition of this product. Upon arrival, one of the heat shield panels was dented, making it very difficult to assemble. The bolts supplied with the product are the cheapest bolts possible. I sheared a bolt in half while tightening it. The holes to assemble the parts together are poorly machined and don't always line up with each other.

Now after 1 month of being outside in a fairly cool northern California spring, the center post of my "stainless steel" heater has rust marks.

For the price of the heater, I'm not impressed with the quality of workmanship and I'm concerned of the overall durability of this product to stand up to the elements. If this was a $150 heater, I wouldn't be as upset. However, for $300, I would expect a much better product.

Purchased this for enclosed patio / lanai in Florida. These patio heaters are very popular in Florida because there is a large part of the year when the evenings are just a bit too cold to sit outside. I did not want to spend $1200 on a real commercial model as it would only be used once a week at most. There is a unit on Amazon that goes for $179 and has decent reviews however some reported that it starts to rust rather quickly. I chose this higher priced model because it is made from the higher quality "304" stainless steel and should hold up better to the frequent rain and humidity in Florida. It took me 45min to assemble and was pretty straight forward, although the instructions are light on the details. The amount of hardware was much less than I expected and everything seemed to line up nicely. The heater fired right up and you CAN feel the heat 9ft away as advertised. I really like the pilotless lighting system. Time will tell how this hold up but I am expecting a few years of trouble free usage. I like that the company is here in Florida and specializes in patio accessories. Parts should be easy to come by as they make a lot of patio heaters (manufactured in China, serviced and distributed in Amelia Island, FL).

For $300, this heater meets my expectations.

Honest reviews on Fire Sense Commercial Patio Heater, Unpainted Stainless Steel

I was extremely disappointed in this product. It is absolutely not worth it! The parts are poorly made. It was almost impossible to put the heat shield together since the small nuts & bolts were not long enough to fit through 3 pieces of metal. I honestly had to wrestle the heat shield on the ground, and take it apart numerous times, since it all never lined up properly. When I finally did get the entire unit together, the ignition switch would not work, and the heater's main burner would not light up. After numerous attempts to make it work, I boxed it up and sent it back. To give you some sense of what a pain it was to put this heater together, the same day as I put the patio heater together, I also assembled a Weber Gas Grill. My father and I had more trouble putting the patio heater together than we did the finely crafted Weber Grill! Now with a new beautiful grill and no patio heater, I was going to order a patio heater from Restoration Hardware since I thought they would offer a higher quality product. What I discovered when looking at their specs, the heater they offered was actually the Fire Sense Deluxe Patio Heater offered on Amazon for $50 more then this originally ordered heater. Restoration Hardware offered the Deluxe heater for $449, but did include a cover with it. I opted to order the unit from Amazon at $304.00 and it arrived yesterday. I immediately noticed the quality of parts is much higher, and the heat shield went together without a glitch, also better designed as it has fewer pieces. Overall this new Deluxe heater went together smoothly, except for one MAJOR flaw in the directions! The Deluxe Heater stand is not weighted, and there is a plastic unit on the bottom that needs be filled with sand. You should fill the plastic tote as your first step before doing anything else. I put the entire heater together & then was going to fill the plastic bottle at the end, but with the weight of the sand, I could not re-attach it (I was working by myself this time). I ended up having to take the heater apart again, so I could wrangle the base and attach the sand filled weight. The directions do not say anything about filling the plastic tote! My Deluxe Heater starts right up & provides excellent heat range!! The moral of this story is, spend $50 more and get the Deluxe Patio Heater, forget about this shoddy unit!

I like to run something for a while before I provide a review. We purchased this in Sept 2011, and used it extensively last winter. It was easy to put together, although I say I am mechanically inclined. We use it in an outdoor covered patio and in our barn. Pretty easy to move without the tank in it. Lights every time on the first try and burns very clean. I brought home monitors from work to check for CO (carbon monoxide) levels as I was using it in the barn, which is mostly contained, (but a fairly drafty). CO readings were always zero at all levels and distances from the unit. Also, I was surprised that very little heat radiates above the unit. It does a very nice job at 'pushing' the heat downward. I have a Mr Heater garage natural gas unit now on the side patio and it seems to shoot a sizeable amount of the heat upwards towards the ceiling rather than down on us. I don't recommend you run this patio heater this way, but it is good to know that the beams above on the patio roof wont get hot if one of our inebriated guests decides to move the unit while I'm in the house. We also liked this particular unit because it has a flat surface on the tank cover. The surface is large enough for multiple beverages and/or ash-tray (for us cigar smokers).

I would have given this 5 stars, but I was a little disappointed that some surface corrosion was apparent shortly after using it a few times. It seems to wipe right off, and I hit it with some metal polish and is slowed its return. Otherwise, I love this heater.

Best 4 ft. Strip Heater for Bending Plastics Deals

4 ft. Strip Heater for Bending Plastics
Customer Ratings: 5 stars

Its a excellent product but you will have to be carafull to manage it because the ceramic body breaks easely, still will work at perfection the heater strip material. If you use it without a controller your plastics as 1/2"thick will bubble before get to the point of bending if you try to heat them just from 1 side, What I did is flip the pice (1/2") every minute for 7-10 minutes and that will do the bending with out bubble the plastic. Also I think you can work it with thicker materials as 3/4 or maybe an 1" but you will need to be flip them.

Also the guys from FTM, Inc. ship me really fast and very helpfull.

As noted in previous reviews, these air vent covers aren't magnetically strong enough to cling to an air vent with air coming out of it. Hell, I couldn't get them to stay on even then the air wasn't blowing, much less when it was blowing.

For air returns, these would probably work okay if the magnetics were strong enough to hold it to the register.

If you are using it for floor vents, it is fine, but I have a vent on the ceiling and it does not stay up.

Best Deals for RPS Magnetic Central Air Conditioning Vent Cover - 3 Pack

The problem is that when packed three together, the magnetic fields are weakened. I found two covers placed with the right polarity stick to a ceiling vent better. You also need to cut them to the vent size to reduce weight.

It's a good idea but the solution needs refinement.

Honest reviews on RPS Magnetic Central Air Conditioning Vent Cover - 3 Pack

Unfortunately, these cover are not magnetic enough to support their weight in a vertical position, which is what I bought them for.

Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for RPS Magnetic Central Air Conditioning Vent Cover - 3 Pack

All the prior reviews are acccurate and these don't work as advertised for the purposes of covering wall vents. However as weak as these magnetic covers are they can potentially work for you. Here's the solution I found that works ok:

1) First make sure to cut them exactly to size...the smaller the better as this allows them to hold their own weight much better.

2) Double them up. After you cut it to size use 2 covers back-to-back on wall vents. They will hold this way.

If all else fails you can always use those mini-magnets which are obscure and powerful enough to hold these up and get the job done.

Looks like the real thing.Moderate heat for large room 24X24 Put a fern on top and it looks sharp with the life like flames and embers on the logs worth the extra money ;)

Good little stove. Looks very realistic and big enough not to be swallowed up by a large room and small enough for smaller spaces. Nice looking flame, puts out good heat. Would be five stars, but mechanism for flame has some mechanical noise, but it is not too obtrusive.

Best Deals for Fire Sense Stowe Electric Fireplace Stove

I shopped long and hard for purchasing an electric stove and totally love this one. The majority of them are too short but this one is taller so it looks better in a larger room. I would have given it 5 stars but sadly it only rates 4 stars because the directions for attaching the legs is lacking. Otherwise the stove is very well built and serves and looks great.

Honest reviews on Fire Sense Stowe Electric Fireplace Stove

This is the best. The most realistic I've ever seen. Well worth the money. I will buy another one in the future for another room.

This fireplace has been a staple in my living room since I purchased it. The set up and instal was simple. The actual "fire" looks a lot better than anticipated. The heat that it puts out isn't too terrible great, but you shouldnt expect it to be with an electric fireplace. It works great for my living room, which is a medium size. It would be a great fit for an office or bedroom and the heat would be adequate.
