I like the Cadet products. These appear very well made, with good quality heating elements inside. I probably undersized mine because I had limited electric power capacity (60 Amps whole house), but, let 'em run. I hooked them up to Honeywell basic line-in thermostats on the wall. Mine are 240v 500 watt (uses about 2 amps). After the initial new smells burn off, they are quite pleasant. Installation, other than runniing all the wiring, was a snap.

The heater is a solid product and well-made.

With the onset of cooler weather just around the corner it is time to think about how you can reduce the cost of heating your home this winter. Let me say at the outset that the Eden Pure GEN3 Model 1000 Portable Heater is not for everyone. If you live in a big house with large open rooms and cathedral ceilings then read no further. You'll have to look elsewhere to solve your problem. But if you reside in a smaller home and have the ability to close doors then the Eden Pure heater just might be your ticket to significantly lower heating costs.

My wife and I purchased our first Eden Pure heater about two years ago. Given the escalating price of fuel oil we felt we needed to find an alternative way to keep our home comfortable during the chilly New England winter. I spotted a full page ad in our local newspaper for the Eden Pure heater and decided to give it a try. All Eden Pure heaters come with a 60 day total satisfaction guarantee. 60 days is more than enough time to determine whether or not this product is going to work for you. We decided to purchase the smaller Model 500 unit and began using it to heat our living room in the evening. We kept our thermostat at 58. While the smaller model was OK it did not make the room as toasty warm as we had hoped. After about two months the infrared bulb failed forcing us to return the unit to the manufacturer for replacement. The replacement unit arrived just days later with a letter of apology. To compensate for our inconvenience the folks at Eden Pure upgraded us to the Model 1000 product at no additional charge. As it turned out this was a terrific break for us as the Model 1000 was exactly what we needed. To make a long story short we have since purchased another Model 1000 for our bedroom and bought another for our pastor to use in his bedroom at the rectory. We count ourselves very happy customers of this product. We continue to be very frugal about they way we heat our home and use our heating system as little as possible. I would estimate that it costs us no more than 15 cents an hour to use the Eden Pure heater. Furthermore, over the past two winters I would estimate that we have saved in the neighborhood of $200-$300 per year on heating oil. In essence, these Eden Pure heaters have practically paid for themselves.

One final note. Unlike other electric heaters we have used the Eden Pure GEN3 Model 1000 Portable Heater will not dry out the air. This is a one of major reasons we are so happy with this product. Also, this unit does not get hot so it is perfectly safe to use around little kids and pets. Finally, the unit is mounted on wheels making it pretty easy to move from room to room. I have to admit I am flabbergasted by the number of negative reviews this item has received. I suspect that most people who wound up dissatisfied tried using them in very large rooms. But if you are actively seeking ways to cut the cost of heating your home consider Eden Pure. Check them out online. You just might discover a way to keep you and your family comfortable this winter at a price you can afford. Highly recommended!

Paul Harvey was a great man. He was a pioneer in radio broadcasting especially in regard to the talk radio genre. He was a decent person. One of the "good guys." In 2005, President George W. Bush awarded Mr. Harvey the Presidential Medal of Freedom. And recently he passed away.

But even great men have flaws. Paul Harvey had been quoted as saying, "I am fiercely loyal to those willing to put their money where my mouth is." And therein, lies a conflict of interest.

Now, I have no way of knowing whether or not Mr. Harvey knowingly endorsed fraudulent products but it is utterly indisputable that he did endorse the main product of Suarez Corporation Industries.

You undoubtedly have never heard of SCI but if you were a regular or even semi-regular listener of Paul Harvey you would have heard him endorse the miraculous EdenPURE heater with its revolutionary "cured copper" heat exchanger.

SCI is a prime supplier to the multi-level marketing community. Some of the companies that make up SCI are:

Biotech Research

International Home Shopping

Lindenwold Fine Jewelers

U.S. Commemorative Gallery

Biotech Medical, LLC

Resource Partners

This list is a smorgasbord of overpriced, yet intensely crappy products. (Oh sure, they sell the Tempur-Pedic line of closed cell foam mattresses which are merely overpriced...you can pick up the exact same thing at Walmart for a fraction of their cost.) This company is a virtual feeding frenzy for multi-level marketing scammers.

But I am only going to focus on their most prominent scam product: The EdenPURE heater.

The EdenPURE heater is the most expensive 115-volt electric space heater money can buy, bar none, and it is marketed with, at best, half-truths and, at worst, blatant lies.

Compounding the problem is literally hundreds (if not thousands) of independent distributors, many of them not authorized resellers.

So lets get into the meat of the issue. Just what does SCI, through its Biotech Research subsidiary, claim that the EdenPURE can do? Here are some select pickings from their FAQ page:

Q. What is the EdenPURE Heater Quartz Infrared Heating System?

A. Our Heating System is a revolutionary zone furnace that safely and efficiently heats entire areas that need additional heat.

Translation: It's a portable electric space heater.

Q. How do the EdenPURE Quartz Infrared Portable Heaters Work?

A. With the advent of micro-electronic technology and the latest in infrared commercial quartz tubes, three solar copper furnaces inside the unit absorb the heat from these tubes much like a sponge absorbs water. The patent pending process of cured natural copper creates an innovative heat exchanger capable of absorbing heat like a solar sponge. It then safely exhales what is coined as "soft" environmentally friendly heat that is able to travel rapidly in relative humidity. The EdenPURE SOFT heat does not burn up the humidity; moreover, it employs the humidity as a vehicle to warm up large spaces quickly and efficiently.

EdenPURE heater has perfectly regulated heat that will not destroy life/energy that other dangerous portable heating devices destroy, but helps to maintain healthy humidity levels indoors.

Other heaters cause occupants to lose energy and force them to breathe dry uncomfortable air. The EdenPURE heater replicates the earth's sun process by electronically exhaling comfortable cost cutting heat without burning up your family's life sustaining oxygen in your indoor living space. The benefits of this natural solar process are revolutionizing the way we will heat our homes and help save large amounts of costly energy.

Translation: Let the BS begin. Taking it item-by-item:

Micro-electronic technology. Translation: It has a digital thermostat.

The latest in infrared commercial quartz tubes. Translation: Three 500-watt halogen light bulbs. Big woop.

Three solar copper furnaces. Translation: Copper pipe cut to length that surround the light bulbs.

Cured natural copper. Translation: Fairy dust & unicorn farts. There is no such thing as "cured" copper.

It then safely exhales. Translation: It has a blower.

-"Soft" environmentally friendly heat. Translation: More fairy dust.

-Does not burn up humidity. Translation: Utter nonsense, heaters don't dehumidify.

-Will not destroy life/energy. Translation: Utter nonsense for the mentally challenged.

-Helps to maintain healthy humidity levels. Translation: Utter nonsense, totally impossible.

-Other heaters cause occupants to lose energy. Translation: We think you are stupid.

-Replicates the earth's sun process. Translation: We think you are really, really stupid.

-Electronically exhales. Translation: We are doubling down on the stupid thing.

-Without burning...oxygen. Translation: Just in case you are an absolute idiot we are tossing this one in out of sheer spite.

-Helps save large amounts of costly energy: Translation: Compared to what? Plutonium?

Now back to the FAQ's...

Q. What makes the EdenPURE Heater "Healthier" than other heaters?

A. For one... the EdenPURE heater does not produce positive ions like other blower (dryer) type heaters.

EdenPURE heater has perfectly regulated heat that will not destroy life/energy that other dangerous portable heating devices destroy, but helps to maintain healthy humidity levels indoors.

Since the early 1950s scientists have suspected that ions play an important role in how the body functions and, consequently, in how we feel. Research has shown that an abundance of negative ions in the air we breathe is highly beneficial.

Conversely, scientists have found that if the air is charged with too few negative ions and too many positives, we become anxious, fatigued and tense. Positive ion poisoning has, in fact, been linked to heart attacks, aggravated asthma, migraine headaches, insomnia, rheumatism, arthritis, hay fever, and most allergies.

Translation: Wow. This is industrial strength BS at its finest. To me, this is holistic, pseudo-science mumbo jumbo that is ridiculous and claiming that other heaters produce positive ions is utter rubbish thrown out there for the slow-witted.

Q. How does the comfort of the EdenPURE Heater System compare to other systems?

A. The EdenPURE Heater System is a state of the art system that provides the most comfortable form of heat. Unlike traditional systems, which may leave a differential of up to 18 degrees from floor to ceiling, the EdenPURE Heater System heated air, using infrared absorption, does not concentrate near the ceiling. Heat stays down and evenly dispersed in the area where you and your family live.

Temperature difference from floor to ceiling is minimal. In addition, the EdenPURE Heater System does not remove humidity from the air. It actually helps maintain humidity levels. The even heating and higher humidity permit lower heat settings with more comfort, less condensation on windows and less static electricity. Furthermore, the EdenPURE Heater System does not use flame, fuel or any form of combustion. Therefore, the heat from the EdenPURE Heater is safe and clean free of any other type of pollution and does not use up the oxygen in the air.

Translation: Okay, well this is more crap served up with a very large spoon...maybe even with a funnel and a hose.

The EdenPURE is, despite claims to the contrary, a forced air electric space heater. There is nothing magical about what it does. Room temperature air comes in one end and higher temperature air comes out the other end. That's it.

Warm air rises due to a property in air called "convection." To minimize the natural process of convection the air in a room may be circulated. Ceiling fans do this quite nicely.

There is no heater made that removes humidity from air. It is a physical impossibility. Period. To remove humidity from air one must lower the air temperature below its dew point. This is called condensation. Think of the "sweat" that occurs on a glass of ice water. If water condenses on the inside of your windows it is because there is a source of excess humidity in the house...someone left the shower running...and the glass is below the dew point. The EdenPURE heater is totally incapable of maintaining ANY level of humidity. Winter air is dry. Go to NOAA and look it up.

Any properly installed heating system will not use up the oxygen of the occupied space. Again, nothing magical here.

Q. Economically, how does the EdenPURE Heater System compare to other systems?

A. The EdenPURE Heater System is the most economical way to heat. In Midwestern Utility field tests for heating seasons, the EdenPURE Heater used an average of 35% less energy than conventional electric furnace/baseboard systems. Comparable results were found during comparisons with fuel based heating systems. Individual results, of course, depend on insulation values, local climate, and other conditions.

Translation: This is a pure lie. The most economical way to heat using electricity is with a heat pump. So, yeah, individual results depend on "other conditions." These (along with that old favorite, "individual results may vary") are what are called "weasel words."

Q. How much area does a EdenPURE Heater System Heat?

A. The EdenPURE GEN3 Model 1000 Heater is a 1483 watt Heating System, is an excellent source of primary heat for up to 400 square feet and a superb source of secondary heat for up to 1000 square feet of well insulated space. The EdenPURE GEN3 Model 500 Heater 900 watt Heating System, is an excellent source of primary heat for up to 200 square feet and a superb source of secondary heat for up to 300 square feet of well insulated space.

Translation: More nonsense. Heat loss for any given room in a house depends on a host of variables: Outside wall area, floor area, ceiling area, window area, door area and local climate conditions to name but a few. Matching a heating appliance without taking heat loss into account is incompetent.

Q. Why does the EdenPURE Heater System cost more than a space heater?

It is a furnace in every respect. A space heater only has the capacity to heat a small space (i.e. under a desk). The EdenPURE Heater System, like a central heating system, will heat an entire area evenly and efficiently. This allows the unit to be a supplemental source of heat. Furthermore, the EdenPURE Heater System is safe. It will not start a fire or burn if you touch it. Because of the reduced energy consumption, and the unit's high level of safety and comfort, EdenPURE Heater System users agree that it is the best value available.

Translation: The EdenPURE is a space heater in every respect. It isn't a furnace. A furnace is designed to heat an entire home. The EdenPURE is not. Properly installed and maintained furnaces are safe, too. Duh. Too many EdenPURE owners are way too embarrassed by what they paid for it to say anything other than what a great value it is.

Q. Why is the EdenPURE Heater System safe?

A. The EdenPURE Heater System has no flame or fumes. Its safe, clean infrared heating elements provide the energy. Extensive testing at CUL (Canada) and UL (United States) has verified the safety of the EdenPURE Heater System. Due to its safe operating temperature, the EdenPURE Heater may be placed next to flammable materials with minimal safety clearance needed.

Translation: All appliances sold in the USA, including space heaters and furnaces, are listed with Underwriters Laboratories. Big Deal.

Q. What kind of Satisfaction Guarantee does it have?

A. We have a 60 day Satisfaction Guarantee. Our Return Policy: You can return or exchange any purchase within 60 days for any reason. NOTE: Items must be returned in the same box & packaging received by you with everything that was included in the original shipment.

Translation: Wow. Sixty days. So, when you discover that it doesn't save you a dime you are totally screwed. Nice policy.

The hundreds of other scam artists that peddle this device go even further with the "cured copper" BS by creating their own little urban legend about its "discovery." Here is the story that they peddle:

"'This advanced heating element was discovered accidentally by a man named John Jones. He had a large old farmhouse that was impossible to heat. Jones had a coal furnace in his basement. Jones placed a sheet of cured copper near the furnace to store it. Cured copper is a type of copper that goes through an extensive heating process to give it special properties. ''After the fire went out in the coal furnace, Jones noticed that the sheet of copper was heating his entire basement evenly, even though the furnace was no longer putting out heat. He also was amazed as to how long the heat stayed in the copper and continued to warm the room. ''Jones was so taken back by this that he started to experiment. He formed a company to develop a heating source out of this cured copper. But Jones had a number of children and he did not want a heating source that would cause a fire or create other hazardous situations like creating carbon monoxide or radiation. He also did not want his children to get burned. To make a long story short, through a great deal of research and development, Jones developed a heating source that utilized commercial infrared quartz tubes. John Jones designed his heating source around the three most important consumer benefits: economy, comfort, and safety. The final development of this infrared quartz heat source cannot be matched by any other heating system in the world."

Translation: Pure and utter BS from start to finish. There is no such thing as "cured copper." It has no "special properties" other than to separate you from several hundred bucks. Take a little stroll over to copper.o r g and try your hardest to find a reference to it. It does not exist except in the minds of simpletons.

The final nail in this smelly little coffin comes from Consumer Reports:

"The unit was the second-lowest-scoring space heater we tested, earning only a 24 on our 100-point scale. According to the folks in our Tech department who tested space heaters, the EdenPure provided lackluster temperature control and was not particularly easy to use, What's more, it was pricey and lacked an overheat-protection feature (key for safety). The GEN3 models do have this important safety feature, according to BioTech Research."

Bottom Line:

If you insist on spending up to $400 for an electric space heater that's your business. But you can get the exact same result for around $30 at your local hardware store. 1500 watts of heat is 1500 watts of heat regardless of how it's packaged and how much it costs.

And don't ever buy anything that multi-level (or network) marketers are selling, especially their "system."

Best Deals for EdenPURE 1000 Infrared Heater GEN3

My dad bought 2 of the Gen 1000 units for my family, as we live in New Hampshire, and at the time heating oil prices (and gasoline) were very high. We thought this would help save money, as the previous year it cost us $600 to $700 a month to heat my 2800 square foot home, at an average heat of 69 during the day and 65 at night. I will say that the heaters do a great job, are vitually silent, can be easily wheeled around, and do heat from top to bottom. They don't create absolute comfortable heat all over a room, especially if, like me, you have older windows, or a den that is over a garage. That being said, my average electricity bill is $180 a month, mostly because I have 6 children, do tons of laundry, vacuum several times a week, bake and cook a lot, etc. Our bill went up to $350.00 when we used both units, and it took both units to heat my downstairs...we still had to turn the heat on in our upstairs. I don't believe that we were saving the difference, or $170 a month in heating oil. I tracked it for 2 months, and I think we only saved about a hundred dollars a month in heating oil. So it wasn't worth it for us. Plus, we couldn't return them for a refund because we went past the 60 day cutoff.

So if you live in a part of the country where the utility rates aren't as high as they are here, it could possibly be worthwhile. It was an expensive lesson for us...my dad spent $700 on the 2 units, and felt so badly about my light bill that he paid for the difference, and they are both sitting in my formal living room, unplugged. I supposed I may try to sell them on ebay, or ship them to him and he can give them away.

Beware, that's all I can say.

Honest reviews on EdenPURE 1000 Infrared Heater GEN3

No 110 volt electric heater is allowed to pull more than 1500 watts. Electric heat is essentially 100% efficient (remember electric waste IS heat). 1500 watts produces approximately 5,000 BTU/hr. A $19.95 "milkhouse" style heater from a big box store or, better yet, your local hardware store produces exactly the amount of heat using the exact amount of electricity an EdenPure unit produces (actually because of it's unique quartz heater/copper tube design, the EdenPure is slightly less efficient). The "rides the humidity" claptrap is spurious nonsense. In other words, if you buy an EdenPure, you are paying $349 (minus $19.95) for clever, misleading marketing and a spiffy looking box. What you are NOT paying for is better, cheaper heat.

I have a computer/electronics hobby area and ham radio station (my "shack") in a corner of our large unfinished basement. Although there are heating ducts in the basement (forced hot air), this area of the basement sometimes needs some help to stay comfortable on very cold winter days without having to crank up the heat so it would be uncomfortably warm (and use $$$) in the rest of the house. I decided to pick up an electric space heater to use when needed. I bought a Lasko 1500 Watt ceramic tower heater (5000 BTU) for about $80 at Lowes. I used it for about a week. While it did eventually warm the area somewhat, I had to run it for 30 to 45 minutes before I noticed any real difference in comfort at any distance from the heater. Yes, it worked but not as well as I had hoped, so I returned it. On the way home I passed a yard sale and stopped to see if they had anything interesting for sale. What I found was an Edenpure G3-1000 heater for sale for $75. It appeared to be in good condition and even had a remote control. We settled on $60 and I took it home. Guess what, it works...about exactly the same as the Lasko. Still takes 30 to 45 minutes for any noticeable comfort increase any distance from the heater. However, I do have to admit it looks a lot spiffier than the Lasko and the remote control is neat. All in all a nice $60 heater. Certainly not worth a penny more than $100.

I wound up installing a Mr. Heater 16,500 BTU ventless propane wall heater. It heats the entire area in about 3 minutes. Since the copper pipe from our large propane tank to the gas grill on the deck runs right by this corner of the basement, it was simple to tap in to it (but I paid a licensed installer to do it).

Bottom line on the Edenpure: It's a decent but extremely overpriced 1500 watt heater. Unless you find one cheap at a yard sale or flea market just go to Lowes or Home Depot. I rate it 1 star because it's a rip off at the normal selling price.

Review of LifeTime Ceramic Disk Furnace with Thermostat Control

LifeTime Ceramic Disk Furnace with Thermostat Control and Oscillating Base Electric Heater by Pelonis/Del-rain
Customer Ratings: 5 stars
Buy Now
I love the look of this heater, you'd never know it was one, it looks like a high-tech retro computer speaker, so cool. The oscillation is smooth and quiet. It hasn't been terribly cold yet (45-50 degrees or so), I'm using it to heat a den, about 20'x20", and it heats the entire room (lots of windows and floor to ceiling sliding glass doors), on the low setting (750 watts), with the thermostat set to about 50%. The thermostat is a dial with plenty of gradationsI want to say it goes to 11 (some of you will get that joke, it actually goes to 9). Seriously, you'll experiment to determine the setting that suits you, but the thermostat is plenty sensitive and works perfectly. I tried it with the unit set to high (1500 watts) and it was too warm in a matter of minutes, heats the room fast.

The owner's manual and description are wrongsay that the thermostat maintains the temperature without the unit cycling on and off, untrue. When it reaches the desired temperature, it shuts off (including oscillation), turns on again when the temperature dips (actually preferable for saving energy). There's one small amber LED, just bright enough to let you know it's on but doesn't light up the room or interfere with sleep.

I formerly had an old oil-filled radiator type electric heater that finally bit the dust, this is the replacement. With that heater in mind, I was looking for one that could be run without the fan. For some reason I had a mind-block on this issue, thought when it was advertised that the heating element and fan were separate that it meant the heat could be run without having the fan on (I mention this if any of you have the same misconception). That's not the caseyou can run the fan by itself with no heat, but you can't run the heater without the fan. The fan is not quiet, but not terribly loud either, has a white noise type neutral sound I don't mind, sleep-wise, but it's loud enough that when it comes on you need to increase the volume on the TV a notch or two. What you'll need to consider is if you're bothered, sleep-wise, by a fan turning on and off, which is does according to the thermostat setting. I've gotten used to it, doesn't bother me.

The metal grille covering the disc on the front gets very hot, but the top stays cool, I have birds that land on it. The heater would not be suitable within reach of small children, I'm not sure about dogs or cats, probably not if they're heat-seeking &/or not too bright.

I bought this because the research literature touted ceramic disc heaters as the most economical and energy efficient to operate, one estimate was 3-5 cents per day. This is my main concern, I'll update this review when I get a full month's electric bill. If my bill is low I'll be VERY happy with this little dynamo.

***I also bought the non-oscillating version with four small discs, I'll be evaluating it too. Both heaters are economically priced, solid, and compact. The 4-disc model doesn't have a low setting, operates at 1500 watts. By the way, these disc heaters are sold under the names Pelonis, Del-Rain, and Lifetime, they're all made by the same company and look to be identical (but with considerable variation in price).

I was concerned when I purchased this unit. There are a number of highly negative reviews on it. However, on further research, I have discovered that the circumstances leading to those reviews could have been avoided.

When one uses this heater with a 20 lb propane bottle & accessory hose, it is imperative that you always shut the tank off first & let the heater run until it burns off all the fuel in the lines.

*** IT IS IMPERATIVE TO FOLLOW THIS PROCEDURE ***

If one simply turns the heater knob to the off position, it will trap trap 100 PSI of propane in the accessory hose. When high pressure propane sits in the rubber hose, it will chemically react with the rubber and leetch a light oil. The oil will build up and quickly work its way into the heater, clogging both the regulator & control valve.

Another very important recommendation is to purchase the gas line filter. This will catch the oily residue and protect the combustion components of the heater should one forget to follow the precautions above.

Keeping these precautions in mind, one will be able to enjoy a very well-build and flexible-use portable heater.

I don't agree with some of the reviews. I don't see that it's a fire hazard at all. My Big Buddy was delivered last week. Here's what I found:

My elevation in Virginia, About 800 feet

Ambient temperature, 72.8 (in my house). Outside temp 29.0

1. Running on high on ONE Disposable Cylinder caused unit shutdown after 50 minutes. (Pilot started to flicker, cut out and then gas shut down). Single bottle was covered with ice (I assume that's bad...)

2. Running on TWO Disposable Cylinders got me the balance of three hours smoothly and well.

3. No fumes observed at all. Some moisture, but cracking the window an inch kept it under control.

4. A lot of heat. Too much for my wood floor. I had to put it on my brick mantle. This might scorch tile.

5. It kept my upstairs (1000 square feet) at 72.5. Only a loss of 0.3 degrees over three hours. Better than expected.

Suggestion: If you are trying to run on high with disposables, use two of them. This is not in the manual.

I don't know how it works with tanks, or whether you need to feed one or both inputs.

My unit did not come with the AC adapter. The batteries work.

If you bump it gently, it shuts off.

Conclusion:

For 139 bucks, it fits the bill well enough. It appears to be very well made, but the safety features make it tempermental. For my use as an emergency heat source, it's adequate.

I've been fumbling, stumbling, and bumbling along trying to obtain the "right" combination of MR HEATER items to allow me to use their BIG BUDDY product. I strongly suggest that you decide on which heater you want, then go to and pull up the web page for that heater. Find the FAQ section for that heater. Read through the "problems" very closely. You will find there are valid reasons for those problems to occur. MR HEATER explains and provides solutions to those problems in the FAQ. One thing, in my humble opinion, is missing in the descriptions ~ If you are using larger than 20-lb tanks, you may need a "regulator" to control the pressure from the tank to your heater or other small appliance. Check with MR HEATER Tech Support before you run into problems. Be patient and be very clear about your setup. Everyone I have contacted has been very helpful and responsive to my questions. MR HEATER also provides information on the SAFETY RECALL situation with a possible solution on what to do with replacing a faulty heater.

Honest reviews on Mr. Heater MH18B, Portable Propane Heater

My heavily retro-insulated 1920 NH colonial is heated with base-board heat supplied by an oil fired water boiler. Living alone now, and seeing oil prices exceeding $4.25/gallon this summer, I decided to get creative with space heaters. After a lot of research, I bought a Big Buddy for my downstairs 12x24 office and a Delonghi TRD0715T oil-filled radiator for my upstairs, 12x12 bedroom. Both have proven to be excellent choices.

To fire my Big Buddy, I drilled a small hole in the wall to the outside, just large enough to sneak the 12' regulated propane hose (accessory) outside and into a barbeque grill size propane tank. I built a little, enclosed stand for the propane tank so I could reach out a window to turn it off and on rather than have to go outside to do it. I've been keeping the rest of the downstairs at 50 degrees as I don't use the other rooms except to walk through to get to my office. In the morning, I fire my Big Buddy up to the max 18,000 btu and in 20 minutes the room is at 60 degrees. Then I turn the heater down to 9,000 btu for a half hour or so until the room is up to 65 degrees, then down to 4,000 btu until the room is at 70 degrees, and for the rest of the day I vary between 4,000 btu and just a pilot light. At a local propane dealer, I can get a 20 lb. barbeque tank filled for $10. I keep two barbeque tanks, so when one runs out of propane, I have another ready to go. So far I go through a tank about every 10 days. No mess, no fumes, no headaches, no problems. Between this heater and the excellent Delonghi heater in my bedroom, I have so far used 1/8 tank of heating oil since August, where I would otherwise by now have used more near 3/4 of my 275 gallon oil tank. Even as heating oil has dropped considerably in price since August, that's still a huge savings.

One downside of my Big Buddy is the installed fan is not only noisy but pretty useless. To compensate for this, I have a six inch fan propped up behind and toward the top of the heater to blow the rising heat around the room. My Big Buddy isn't thermostat controlled, but who cares? When the room is up to the temperature I want, I get up out of my chair once every couple hours or so and turn the heat control up or down, and for that minor inconvenience I save a small fortune on heating oil.

If you buy the Big Buddy, be sure to turn off your propane source and let your Big Buddy pilot light go out before you turn off the unit. Otherwise, enjoy the relatively inexpensive heat from this excellent powerhouse.

Here's what you should know BEFORE you buy this thing. It is inefficient, expensive, and environmentally lousy with 1 lb disposable cylinders. If you are planning to use a 20lb propane tank, be aware that you can only get near the 220 hour (at low) performance by using 2 tanks. The heater has 2 regulators, 2 heating tiles, and 2 connections. At low and medium settings you will only use one of the `tiles'. On high, both tiles will burn brightly. The fan is noisy and sucks down D cell batteries, but really doesn't move much air. There is also the AC adapter option: Radio Shack sells it for about 18-20$. Mr. Heater Customer Service can provide the part numbers but cannot sell you the item. When you talk with them, you might as well order the fuel filters ($9.95 each) that you will need if you use 20 pound tanks. For 2 tanks, order 2 filters. The filters are a (moisture/impurity) trap that prevents the tiny holes in the heating tiles from filling up with junk. Propane may be equal at creation, but one never knows how it has been stored. Use the filters. If you use 20 lb tanks, you will also need hoses. Mr. Heater makes them in 5 and 12 foot lengths. Amazon seems to have the best price on these. You should expect to spend $100-$150 above the price of the heater for hoses, tanks, filters, AC adapter.

Feeding the rumor mill: There was a Consumer Product Safety Commission Recall of this item during the Winter 04/05. It impacted all heaters sold prior to about January 10, 2005. The problem concerned a potential malfunction of the regulator/control valve assemblies. My first heater was affected by the recall. I had no use of it for the winter of 04/05. My second heater works just fine.

Amazon Customer Service: EXTREMELY POOR as it relates to this purchase. I purchased my heater days before the recall was announced. Amazon refused to accept my return of this item even though it had not been used. They also took down product reviews alerting customers to the recall (and potential safety hazard) of this item. After numerous polite but fruitless conversations, I contacted the President of Amazon with my complaint. He has chosen to ignore it. I would probably buy this heater again despite the problems. I would never buy anything from Amazon again because of the problems.

Very nice! It exceeded my expectations. Heavy gauge steel. Decent welds. The floral scroll work looks a little..too much in the pictures but is very nice in real life. Heavy duty masonry fasteners included, but would have been nice if masonry drill bit had been also. I used fasteners I already had with drill bit size I already had instead and it worked fine. I bought the 24 inch. It is actually 24 inches from wall to tip, more like 22 inches from wall to center of hook where pot hangs.

I would not hesitate to buy again!

Cheap Frugah Black Fireplace Heater Electric Wall Mount Radiator Flame

Frugah Black Fireplace Heater Electric Wall Mount Radiator Flame Effect W/remote Control
Customer Ratings: 5 stars

I bought this for a newly decorated bedroom and installed it on a wall about where I'd place a picture. It is easily seen from the bed versus having to look down at a floor unit. The flame looks very nice versus some of the weird fake looks I've seen. The remote does change the level of flame, but I keep mine on high because it looks so good. I have not used the heater yet, and probably won't unless electricity goes out and I plug it into an extension cord from a generator. I verified it works. My frame is black, looks very modern, and contrasts beautifully with the fire. The black frame does not distract from the fire, as I think a white frame would.

The plate is wonderful, it does the job just as advertised. The plate comes with instructions on recommended microwave time for the wattage of the microwave. My microwave is 1100 watts so I heated the plate for 1 minute, it was able to keep the food warm for over 45 minutes. A family member is a very slow eater (due to medical problems each meal takes a little over an hour not including dessert) and this plate was able to keep the food warm the entire time. Initially, I was looking for a metal platter/wood tray combo that restaurants use to serve fajitas or steaks to help keep food warm. I saw this and thought I would try it out; I am very glad I did. I think it is much better than the "sizzler" plates since:

1) it keeps food warm for a longer period of time.

2) it can be washed in dishwasher (some metal plates have to be hand-washed).

3) takes up less room in cabinet, do not have the hassle of metal plate and protective outer wood/plastic plate.

4) safer than metal plate since rim of this plate is safe to touch if you follow the instructions.

Plus, it is very pretty and neutral in design so fits with any decor. The only potential down side is that the plate is a little heavy, however, it is still lighter than the metal platter/protective tray combo. I am very impressed with this product and recommend it to everyone who likes their food hot. As I said, buy it and you won't be disappointed.

A big THANK YOU to the inventor for coming up with this product :)

I ordered two of these plates and did not overheat them in the microwave. I also hand washed to try and avoid the problems others had before me. Unfortunately, one of my plates lost it's seal and water got inside. I called and actually talked with Juan (the inventor) about the problem. He was very nice and quite willing to do whatever to make sure I was happy. I do not want to return the plates though as they truly do a better job of keeping food hot than anything I've ever tried. Juan told me I could try and reseal the seam with heat resistant silicon. This works and appears(so far) to solve the problem. I also realize, as my wife told me, that nobody wants to have to work on something you just paid good money for. Part of me is a natural handyman so I had to try and fix it first! Also, I was quite impressed with both Juan and his story of his startup company, so I wanted to try some possible solutions. After all, I want to keep and use the plates, and I also would love to be able to help Juan to make his venture a success. He told me he was partially disabled and this was both his dream and his only source of income. (Kind of a make it or break it situation for his family.) So in that light, if anybody would like the steps I've taken to try and fix this problem, email me at gregorysugg at gmail dot com and I'll be happy to send you an email with the info I've found out on what helps. Thanks, Greg.

I put my HotSmart plate in the microwave today, and it came out with an enormous crack as long as 3/4 of the plate.

I bought mine several months ago and I've noticed that as time has gone by, I've had to heat it longer and longer in the microwave to get it to stay warm.

The other commenters who pointed out how ugly the bottom of the HotSmart plate is are right the creator responded that the back of a refrigerator is ugly too, and that doesn't matter. Um... but you *see* the bottom of these plates, you don't see the back of a fridge. Before the plate cracked it worked fine, but yes, it's ugly. I would have no problem with this, but all of the literature on Amazon, the product's website, and that comes with the HotSmart plate SCREAMS AT YOU IN ALL CAPS about how this is elegant china that can be used for formal dining. Um... no, it can't. If it could, the creator wouldn't have compared it to the back of a fridge. At its best it is useful and hospital-looking.

Like I said the HotSmart plate does stay warm, but it's too fragile for regular use. Mine chipped a little right off the bat so I've always been extremely gentle with it, but if it cracks from regular microwave use, it's not well-made.

Also it seems like an intentional typo that it's labeled HotSmart Plates (plural). You only get one it should be HotSmart Plate (singular).

Honest reviews on HotSmart Hot Gourmet Plates - InstaHot 30 minute Plus (Patented)

Hubby and I finally got to using our InstaHot plates tonight. First off, THANK YOU for creating this product. We love them. Really. As recent WLS patients (both hubby and myself), we have to eat our meals over about 20 minutes. I take a bit longer than he does. One of my biggest pet peeves since having surgery is all my hot food is cold after about 10 minutes. I like my food to be hot while I eat it.

So in come InstaHot plates. We were so thrilled to find them. I have to say, at $15 a piece, I was a bit trepidatious about the purchase. You're talking to someone who has an entire set of plates from IKEA for less than the two plates we ordered and we use those cheap plates every day. I can say, now that I've used the InstaHot plates, the $15 was a small price to pay to keep my food hot through my dinner. And that they did.

The plates, as advertised, stayed cool on the rim, and the base and plate area was hot. After 20+ minutes of eating, my fish stayed hot, but was not overcooked, dry or overheated. I figured we'd try the plates with fish first, as it's very easy to overcook trout, but the plates did exactly as advertised and kept the food steadily hot throughout the meal without any further cooking or, as said, drying out.

The plates are a bit heavy, and (unless I missed it) the instructions are a bit sketchy on care and cleaning. We hand washed our plates after letting them cool for a little over an hour. If you're not used to grabbing your plates by the rim, you'll have to get used to that. I had to keep telling myself to not put my hand under the plate itself. I should note, however, that the hot plates did not damage my table or where the plates were set after heating and through dinner.

The quality of the plates is high and the plates are neutral.

Overall, a great product. The customer service from the inventor/vendor has been excellent. I look forward to this product line expanding.

Easy to set up & use, and it keeps feet nice & warm. I give it 4 instead of 5 stars because (a) it's made of hard plastic that's a bit uncomfortable after a while on bare or stocking feet, and (b) it's a bit overpriced. It's just a piece of injection-molded plastic with a small heating element... should be more like $40. It has 3 heat settings: off, foot-warmer, and radiant-panel. Haven't tried the panel setting, but the foot-warmer setting is nice. Would be better if there were more of a range of settings (foot-warm-low, foot-warm-high), and for the price I'd kinda expect this. A good feature is the angled base: when sitting in a chair and stretching your feet out to it, the angle is comfortable on the ankles. I put mine on a plug-in timer: no need to consume 90 watts 24/7, I only run it from 2PM to midnight. In summary, despite the omission of a few minor features and being slightly pricey, I'm glad I got it and I would recommend it to anyone looking to end cold feet under their desk.

This heated footrest isn't the best there could be, but it's pretty much all there is. There are very few of these sorts of products on the market, which surprises me because it's such a simple and practical solution to the cold feet issue. Plus giving you a good foot-rest for those who work in office chairs all day.

As stated by others, there are only two settings. My 'low-for-feet' setting only worked once. I turned it to high after I decided that the low setting, after being on for almost an hour, became that exact temperature of the bath tub water which is still warm enough to sit in, but it's become just cool enough that you really want to turn on the hot water and try to warm it up. Not satisfactory. Also, it warmed ONLY the soles of my feet. Top, back, sides, ankles all remained cold.

So I flipped it to high setting, and I think mine was defective because the red 'on' light began to randomly switch between high and low setting. I thought this was the 'safety switch' feature which is supposed to cool the thing down before it overheats. It got really, really hot to the touch after this. Not hot enough to instantly burn, but hot enough that I could not put my feet directly onto the plastic. I solved the issue by folding up a towel and putting it on top, and putting my feet on the towel.

Still, tops of my feet got cold so I put a second towel over the tops of my feet and that worked ok. Not ideal.

I tried turning it back to the low setting, but it remained just as hot. Now whether I turn it to the high or low setting, both of them get pretty hot... either my TT is defective and stuck in 'high' mode, or the foot-rest setting is also a little too hot. I'm too lazy to return it, since I figured out a solution that works great for me.

I solved the issue of the just-a-bit-too-hot temperature by using a pair of Herbal Concepts Hot/Cold Comfort Booties. I wear the booties when I am using the TT footrest. The bean-bag in the bottom of the booties diffuses the intense heat from the foot rest so it's comfortable, and the foot rest keeps the bean-bag warm all day so I don't have to make a lot of trips to the microwave. Works great together! Plus, I needed to wear something on the tops and backs of my feet (more than just socks) or they stayed cold, while the bottom of my foot roasted. (I actually got burned spots on the bottoms of my feet from resting them too long in one place, but the tops of my feet were still cold.)

Now the booties keep top and back of feet warm, and if my feet get too warm, I can take the booties off of the foot rest for a while, let the bean-bag bottoms cool down a touch, then put them back on to heat up again. I also put my shoulder-wrap bean bag thing (similar to this: Herbal Concepts Organic Cotton Herbal Fan Shoulder Wrap Natural) onto the TT foot rest for a while, until it got nice and warm, then I put that on my shoulders and I'm warm top and bottom!

Otherwise, there is no way the TT foot rest could be used as a real radiant heat panel. On high setting, it ALMOST gets too hot for your SKIN to be touching it for very long, but you have to be within literally an inch of the panel to feel much heat coming off of it. If you were more than a couple of inches away from it, I can't imagine even the most sensitive person could feel anything. It's made to be touched, I think they just threw in the 'heat panel' thing as an advertising gimmick. The way the legs work and everything, it's not really meant to stand up on its edge like that. They just cheaped out, and didn't know what to do about the super hot setting, so they called it a 'radiant heat panel.' Uh-huh.

Last quibble; the feet for this thing are cheapo plastic shaped like a half of a tire, and attach (if you can call it that) to the big, flat plastic heat panel top by two little knobs that slide in a cheap plastic slot cut into the 'arch' of the tire shape. So the thing can slide through the slot forward (toward you), so it's angled, or it can slide back (away from you), so it's flat. Because nothing is really attached, this made the foot rest feel very flimsy to me at first, and I didn't like how it shifts and wiggled when I move my feet. I felt as if ANY amount of pressure on this thing (like if you accidentally stepped on it, God forbid) might break the legs right off, because looking at that slot, it's not very thick plastic or very strong at all, and neither are the knobs on the underside of the heat panel.

Seeing as this is a kind of stool, I think it's impractical to have made it with feet that aren't really strong enough to be stepped on. Sure, it's only a 'foot rest' and supposed to carry no weight, but whatever. Stuff happens. Hopefully not to me, this was too expensive to keep replacing it.

However, after a few days I got to kind of like the way it 'rolls' back and forth, because it's a way to kind of semi-stretch, by rolling your ankles forward and the whole thing slides on the knobs and goes flat, then rolling them back toward you and it goes angled again. Kind of like ankle exercise. I guess.

The cheap-o plastic basket weave on top is obnoxious. They gave it a really rough texture obviously trying to compensate for the fact that they were too cheap to give it a rubber mat on top. Even with the super rough texture, it's still too slick for shoes to stay put, especially women's slick-sole shoes. Even my leather slippers slid off the top of this thing. Very, very slick plastic. Needs a rubber mat.

So in conclusion, with some creativity it does the job, gets plenty warm enough when you use large slippers or booties or towels or shoes with thick rubber soles or SOMETHING to insulate your feet from the foot rest itself. But for sixty bucks (and that's better than the eighty it is supposed to be sold at) I really would have expected 1) more variety of heat settings, 2) a rubber top so your shoes don't keep slipping off, 3) more sturdy legs attached better than a little knob in a plastic slot which looks breakable, and 4) if it's going to be advertised as a radiant heat panel, it should actually be able to perform this function.

I'm going to use this as long as it lasts, and hope something better comes on the market for when I need to replace it.

I love this foot warmer!!! I've had it for a few weeks now. I replaced my space heater at work with this foot warmer and I couldn't be happier. I always have cold feet and ankles. The space heater just makes my upper legs too hot and my feet were still cold. This is the perfect solution!! I usually have it set at the highest setting I love that when I get up to walk away my shoes hold the heat for a few minutes.

I want to order another one for my computer desk at home. I wish it was cheaper. $60+ is a little high.

Edited to Add:

I got the second one at home. I LOVE it. Things this product could do to improve. (1) Offer a lower setting so it can be used with bare or socked feet. It's a little too toasty directly against the skin. (2) Put a remote switch on the cord that could be placed up on the desk. It isn't easy crawling under the desk to turn it off/on. The little switch is NOT manipulatable with your toes trust me, I've tried and tried.

However, this is still an AMAZING product and I highly recommend to any who suffer from cold feet like I do.

Updated 09-Sep-2012

My original toasty toes has died. :( It got harder and harder to get the footrest to adjust its tilt so I would sorta stomp on it until it moved. Well, I killed it. The attachment bolt which is plastic sheared off and one foot no longer was attached. I'm so bummed. I still have my second toasty toes. I'm much more careful now when adjusting the tilt. Sometime I need to flip the thing over and move the feet with my hands. Still worth the warm toes/feet though. :-)

Honest reviews on Indus-Tool TT Toasty Toes Ergonomic Heated Footrest

This heated footrest has saved me from the horror of frozen toes. It's made of sturdy plastic and the lower of the two settings provides more than enough warmth. The only downside is that it's easy to leave switched on and turning it on and off involves some grovelling around under the desk. Happily both these problems are solved by adding a Intermatic TB121C Digital Tabletop Lamp and Appliance Timer which both allows you to set a couple of daily "off" times (so the footrest is never left on for more than a few hours) and also provides a desktop on/off switch.

I bought two of these, one for my wife, one for me. My wife uses hers mostly for the stand-up heater. I read all the reviews before I bought. The assembly of the two legs was easy and the directions very clear. I read the reviews about it being "cheap plastic". I don't know how "cheap" it is, but yes it is plastic. We don't jump on them or abuse them...so far, no problems. What might be construed as a problem is the amount of heat it puts out. Well duh, you bought a heater!

After a while, it does get too hot for my bare feet, so I put a towel on it. If it is still too warm, I turn it off for a while. Am I getting too logical? Doesn't have a thermostat or remote control...it's a heater, not a computer. Would the extras be nice, sure, but then the price would have to go up. Would I recommend this, definitely.

Buyer beware this is not a simple installation. We hired a professional installer who read the directions thoroughly several times. He understood the unit would need to go into the wall six inches in order to mount flush with the wall. We thought our wall was 4 inches deep. He built a frame but after making the wall cut, discovered an iron pipe behind the cut. He then started over with a new frame and was able to complete the install. The cutting, frame building and time needed to purchase new materials required 10 hours of his time.......no small expense. The remote did not work. The company responded saying they will ship a new remote. The flame presentation is lovely. One thing we did not know until we read the installation directions is that when the light bulbs go out, the entire unit must be pulled from the wall to replace the bulbs.

Heats OK if you can get it started. Seems company is having problems with a cold soak issue on their P.C. board, so they tell me. It takes about 10 minutes to get it going if you have turned it off and try to start it "cold". Mr Heater is suppose to come out with a new board to fix the problem next year. Also draft fan motor tends to have excessive vibration and make a considerable amount of noise.

Purchased the mr. heater 45k btu from my local lowes store on sale. Took about 3 hours between unpacking and converting over to propane with the conversion kit, installing the vent pipe etc. until we had it up and running. Puts out good heat, quiet and works every time. I would recommend getting a digital electronic thermostat as they seem to be more accurate than the mechanical style.

Best Deals for Mr. Heater Big Maxx 45,000 BTU Propane Garage Unit Heater #MHU45LP

I purchased this heater from Northern after reading some reviews here and there. Several reviews noted poor packaging and damage upon arrival. I wasn't disappointed. There were a few dents and bent parts but nothing to warrant a return. My biggest complaint about the heater is that the blower behind the unit for heating the room vibrates alot. If you walk into the room you can actually feel it as it resonates in the room. I'm guessing the fan blade is out of balance. It made the unit vibrate enough to make the whole office hum. I did see another reviewer post something about the heater vibrating badly. I replaced the bolts for the cage that protects the fan and holds the motor with some vibration isolators which quieted it down considerably. Sad that I had to fix a new machine. I'm going to call and see if I can get a new blade sent as that will be much easier than taking the whole unit down and sending it back. Other than that the unit operates great and heats the room up quickly.

I have had my heater for several years now. Seems to work okay for a time but every year, and I do mean every year I have problems with it starting. Its a pain to fix. I would go with a different brand next time. These are basic units and they have been around a long time. All the bugs should be out of them by now.
